FBI report to retailers reveals 20 hacking cases in past year Posted: 23 Jan 2014 01:43 PM PST By Jim Finkle and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI has warned U.S. retailers to prepare for more cyber attacks after discovering about 20 hacking cases in the past year that involved the same kind of malicious software used against Target Corp in the holiday shopping season. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation distributed a confidential, three-page report to retail companies last week describing the risks posed by "memory-parsing" malware that infects point-of-sale (POS) systems, which include cash registers and credit-card swiping machines found in store checkout aisles. "We believe POS malware crime will continue to grow over the near term, despite law enforcement and security firms' actions to mitigate it," said the FBI report, seen by Reuters. "The accessibility of the malware on underground forums, the affordability of the software and the huge potential profits to be made from retail POS systems in the United States make this type of financially motivated cyber crime attractive to a wide range of actors," the FBI said. |

Video of Ukraine cop abusing naked protester draws outrage Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:49 AM PST A member of Ukraine's elite Berkut riot police force assaulted and humiliated a naked protester after he was detained in freezing cold temperatures in Kiev, according to a video posted Thursday. The Ukrainian interior ministry swiftly apologised for the horrific incident, which recalled notorious prisoner abuse scandals like that at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The man had apparently been arrested during the clashes between police and protesters that have rocked Kiev over the last days. The video, which was posted on YouTube and was rapidly broadcast by Ukrainian opposition channels, shows the arrested protester completely naked except for his socks and being roughly pushed into a police bus. |

Deal signed to end South Sudan fighting that's killed thousands Posted: 23 Jan 2014 02:11 PM PST South Sudan's government and rebels on Thursday signed a ceasefire agreement, pledging to halt fighting within 24 hours and end five weeks of bitter conflict that has left thousands dead. The agreement was signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa by representatives of South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and rebel delegates loyal to ousted vice president Riek Machar, and was greeted by cheers from regional peace brokers and diplomats. South Sudan's government also agreed to free 11 officials close to Machar who were detained after fighting between rival army units broke out on December 15, although no timeline for their release was given. "These two agreements are the ingredients to create an environment for achieving a total peace in my country," said Taban Deng, head of the rebel delegation. |

Target CFO to testify before Senate on big data breach Posted: 23 Jan 2014 09:39 AM PST (Reuters) - Target Corp's chief financial officer will testify before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on February 4 about a massive data breach in what is likely to be the first time the retailer publicly answers questions about the unprecedented attack. The committee is chaired by Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat and author of one of the few data security bills under consideration. John Mulligan, who is executive vice president as well as chief financial officer, oversees Target's financial portfolio, including finance and retail services, company spokeswoman Molly Snyder said in an email confirming his appearance before the panel. Representatives of the Federal Trade Commission, the Secret Service and the Department of Justice are also slated to testify at the hearing, according to the committee's schedule. |

The account of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, @AlqassamBrigade, appeared to have been suspended several times over the past week, and was still inaccessible with a "suspended" notice on Thursday. A spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, accused Twitter of suppressing freedom of speech and of pandering to the political agenda of Hamas's sworn enemy Israel. Mike Huckabee told fellow Republicans on Thursday that rival Democrats were trying to win over female voters by promising them free birth control and telling them "they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government."
