Who is Stephen Colbert, really? Posted: 10 Apr 2014 04:19 PM PDT When CBS announced Stephen Colbert as David Letterman's successor on the "Late Show," speculation immediately surfaced over what that meant. Mr. Colbert quickly answered the question with a release through his publicist, stating, "I won't be doing the new show in character, so we'll all get to find out how much of him was me. But the question now is: Will his core fans – passionate members of the Colbert nation, a cohort that skews younger than the 50-year-old Colbert and one that CBS dearly wants to woo – be as eager to find out as well? "CBS is taking an incredible risk," says Paul Levinson, a professor at Fordham University in New York and author of "New New Media." "The only reason Colbert is successful and people love him is because they love the satirical character he plays on Comedy Central." |

Prosecutor calls Pistorius's version 'impossible' Posted: 10 Apr 2014 01:54 PM PDT In a pummelling cross-examination, the prosecution called Oscar Pistorius's account of killing his girlfriend "impossible" on Thursday, zeroing in on apparent inconsistencies in key parts of his testimony. "Your version is so improbable that nobody would ever think it's reasonably, possibly true it's so impossible," Prosecutor Gerrie Nel thundered during his second day interrogating the Olympian. Under intense questioning, Pistorius said police moved fans, put the duvet on the floor and opened the curtains when they came to his villa, implying they had tampered with the crime scene. |
Possible fifth ping heard in Malaysia jet search Posted: 10 Apr 2014 07:37 AM PDT PERTH, Australia (AP) — An Australian aircraft Thursday detected what may be the fifth signal coming from a man-made device deep in the Indian Ocean, adding to hopes that searchers will soon pinpoint the object's location and send down a robotic vehicle to confirm if it is a black box from the missing Malaysian jet. |
The Koch brothers' 'secret bank' steps out of the shadows Posted: 10 Apr 2014 03:26 AM PDT A once-secretive Koch-backed group that bankrolls conservative causes puts its name on ads against Democrats for the first time. But donors remain undisclosed. |
Matt Bai: Scott Brown shouldn’t worry about carpetbagger label Posted: 10 Apr 2014 02:30 AM PDT The real reason modern politics so often seems to surprise those of us who practice or follow it closely isn't because we lack for reams of granular data culled from the research of political scientists, or because we're locked away in Washington and have no idea what's going on in the rest of the country. It's because we apply the wrong context to the question. |
