Ethiopia facing flood of S.Sudan refugees: UN Posted: 02 Jul 2014 09:26 AM PDT Ethiopia is facing a huge wave of refugees from South Sudan, where the spectre of famine threatens to heap further misery on a people already blighted by civil war, the UN's food aid agency warned on Wednesday. "The numbers are increasing exponentially in a very short period of time," said Abdou Dieng, head of the World Food Programme's Ethiopia operations. More than 158,000 South Sudanese refugees have already crossed the border to reach camps in neighbouring Ethiopia, according to UN figures released Wednesday. "The situation is not improving in South Sudan, so we expect that they will continue to come. |

Facebook admits 'communications' error with emotions study Posted: 02 Jul 2014 08:11 AM PDT Facebook "communicated really badly" about a controversial study in which it secretly manipulated users' feelings, the social network's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg admitted Wednesday. The company clandestinely altered the emotional content of feeds of nearly 700,000 users for a week in 2012, giving some sadder news and others happier news in a study aimed at better understanding "emotional contagion". The research, published last month, has prompted online anger and questions about the ethics of the research and forced Facebook on the defensive. "We communicated really badly on this subject," she said, before adding: "We take privacy at Facebook really seriously." |

NASA launches carbon-tracking satellite Posted: 02 Jul 2014 06:28 AM PDT The NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) mission is seen sitting on its launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California June 30, 2014. The launch of the unmanned Delta 2 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California was called off less than a minute before lift-off on July 1 when the pad's water system failed, a live NASA Television broadcast showed. The rocket, built and flown by United Launch Alliance, a partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing, was tentatively rescheduled to launch on Wednesday, but engineers first have to track down the cause of the water system problem, said NASA launch commentator George Diller. Pardon my (fake) accent: 'Shrek' star against Scots independence Posted: 02 Jul 2014 04:35 AM PDT Comedian Mike Myers, the voice of Scottish movie ogre Shrek, came out on Wednesday against the country splitting from Britain ahead of its independence referendum in September. Myers, whose other creations include "Austin Powers" and "Wayne's World", joins stars such as author J. K. Rowling and singer David Bowie in opposing independence. In a BBC radio interview, Myers was asked whether Shrek -- the grouchy but loveable swamp-dwelling star of four animated films -- would back Scotland going it alone. He was initially reluctant to answer but finally said in the ogre's Scottish accent: "Shrek wants what the will of the Scottish people want." |
