Texas' Perry to turn himself in Posted: 19 Aug 2014 03:58 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN Texas (Reuters) - Texas Governor Rick Perry, a possible Republican presidential candidate in the 2016 race, was fingerprinted and had his mug shot taken by judicial authorities on Tuesday after being indicted last week on two felony charges of abusing power. This indictment is fundamentally a political act that seeks to achieve at the courthouse what could not be achieved at the ballot box," Perry said after finishing the 15-minute processing at the Travis County criminal justice center, a short walk away from the governor's mansion. The indictment has cast a shadow over a presidential run for Perry, who has ranked near the bottom of possible Republican candidates. Perry was indicted on Friday by a grand jury in Travis County, a Democratic stronghold in the heavily Republican state, over his veto of funding for a state ethics watchdog that has investigated prominent Texas Republicans.

Why were 100,000 elephants slaughtered over 3 years? Posted: 19 Aug 2014 07:37 AM PDT The insatiable demand for ivory is causing a dramatic decline in the number of African elephants. In 2011, the worst African elephant poaching year on record since 1998, poachers killed an estimated 40,000 elephants, or about 8 percent of the elephant population in Africa. Japan export rebound offers hope for economic growth Posted: 19 Aug 2014 05:06 PM PDT By Stanley White TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's exports rose in July for the first time in three months in a tentative sign that demand overseas is starting to recover, which could raise hopes that exports can offset a slump in consumer spending. The export data will be a relief for the Bank of Japan, which has predicated its economic growth and inflation forecasts on a rapid rise in net exports as part of the government's "Abenomics" plan to energize the Japanese economy. Growth in exports was driven by increased shipments of automobiles and electric machinery, the data showed. Japan's exports have struggled for much of this year due to weak demand in Asia, so evidence of a recovery suggests the economy will rebound from a sales tax hike in April, which would ease pressure on policymakers to take steps to support growth.
