India-Pakistan flood toll hits 400, thousands still stranded Posted: 09 Sep 2014 01:04 PM PDT Emergency workers battled Tuesday to reach hundreds of thousands of people marooned by floods in India and Pakistan that have claimed more than 400 lives, as anger grew over the speed of the rescue effort. The army said it was airlifting boats to the worst-hit areas of Indian Kashmir, where whole villages have been submerged and an estimated 400,000 people are stranded in the region's worst flooding for half a century. "The situation in Kashmir Valley is still very grim, it is quite critical," said Rajesh Kumar, police Inspector General of the Jammu region in India's Jammu and Kashmir state. |

UK parties trying hard to lure Scotland away from separation vote Posted: 09 Sep 2014 01:06 PM PDT The leaders of Britain's three main political parties announced a last-minute trip to Scotland on Tuesday to boost the campaign against independence after a surge in separatist support ahead of next week's referendum. Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband agreed to skip their weekly debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday and instead head north, reflecting a new sense of urgency in the unionist camp. Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister in the coalition government, will also hit the campaign trail after opinion polls suggest the break-up of the 300-year-old union is now a real possibility. "So tomorrow the right place to be isn't in Westminster at prime minister's questions, it's being in Scotland listening to people, talking to people." |

Millions of job openings, so why aren’t companies hiring? Posted: 04 Sep 2014 11:34 AM PDT When it comes to jobs, the number of them added for August came in lighter than expectations at 142,000 (analysts were looking for 230,000). Other data reveals plenty of help is wanted, but employers aren't hurrying to hire. We talk to University of Chicago economist Steven Davis about why firms are waiting the longest to fill job openings in 13 years, according to an index he created. |
Hundreds die in India & Pakistan Posted: 09 Sep 2014 08:43 AM PDT By Abu Arqam Naqash and Adnan Abidi MUZAFFARABAD/SRINAGAR (Reuters) - The death toll from the heaviest rain to fall on Kashmir in 50 years rose to more than 400 on Tuesday, with thousands still trapped on rooftops and residents criticizing Indian and Pakistani authorities for not doing enough to help them. "The damage is shocking," a senior official from India's National Disaster Response Force said in New Delhi. "People have been stranded on the rooftops of their homes for the last three days in some parts of Kashmir." The official, who requested anonymity, said he would have deployed disaster-response teams earlier, but "we were all caught off guard because there was not a single warning issued by the weather office. India's meteorological department had forecast heavy rain in Kashmir last week, but the Central Water Commission, which issues flood advisories, has been criticized by Indian media for not warning the state. |

In Missouri, Michael Brown memorial preserved, protected Posted: 09 Sep 2014 04:34 PM PDT By Carey Gillam FERGUSON Mo. (Reuters) - It's still there. The stuffed animals, flowers, and candles mounded into a memorial in the middle of the street where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer changes almost daily. It has been a month since the unarmed Brown was shot at least six times in an altercation with Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Crowds no longer gather daily at the site where Brown died, a quiet street that runs between the Canfield Green apartment buildings. |

Arizona gets relief after deadly, record-breaking storm Posted: 09 Sep 2014 12:24 PM PDT By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - Parts of Utah and Colorado were placed under flash flood warnings on Tuesday, a day after the drought-stricken U.S. Drier weather brought some relief to the Phoenix area and southern Arizona, which was hard hit on Monday. In the city of Mesa, east of Phoenix, more than 100 homes were affected by floods, and images showed crews pumping water out of deluged streets and partially submerged children's playgrounds. Months of severe drought exacerbated the situation in many areas, with arid conditions stripping away vegetation that would normally trap or slow rain water. |
