Police cruiser video shows moments before fatal shooting Posted: 09 Apr 2015 04:28 PM PDT NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The traffic stop starts like any other: an officer pulls over a motorist, walks up to the driver's side window and asks for license and registration. What happened minutes later appears to take place without any obvious sign of provocation or conflict: The driver opens the door and runs, and the officer chases after him. |
Obama moves to end conversion therapies for LGBT youth Posted: 09 Apr 2015 02:38 PM PDT In a move that further solidifies the White House's stance on gay marriage and LGBTQ civil liberties, President Obama is calling for an end to what's known as gay and transgender conversion therapies. This comes just a few months after a 17-year-old transgender teen, Lellah Alcorn, took her own life after writing an online suicide note, which included references to how religious therapists attempted to change her back to being a boy. |

New video shows South Carolina man fleeing traffic stop before shooting Posted: 09 Apr 2015 04:06 PM PDT By Harriet McLeod NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - A video captured by a South Carolina police cruiser's dashboard camera surfaced on Thursday showing a black man fleeing after what appears to be a routine traffic stop by a white officer who would eventually pursue and fatally shoot him in the back. The footage, released by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and aired by CNN, was taken minutes before a bystander's video recorded North Charleston Patrolman Michael Slager gunning down 50-year-old Walter Scott as he ran. The new video clip, which lasts just four minutes, shows Slager, 33, approaching a black Mercedes-Benz and asking the driver, Scott, for his license and proof of insurance. |

The Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll also showed Clinton in a close race with U.S. Senator Rand Paul, the Kentucky Republican who declared his candidacy on Tuesday. |
South Carolina officer dismissed after shooting man in back Posted: 08 Apr 2015 05:01 PM PDT By Harriet McLeod NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - A white South Carolina police officer has been fired after being charged with murder for shooting a black man in the back as he fled, but questions remained on Wednesday about some details of the killing that was filmed by a witness. The shooting occurred on Saturday in North Charleston, a town of about 100,000 people, nearly half of whom are black, but it gained national media attention on Tuesday when the video became public. The incident was recorded by a man identified by NBC News as Feidin Santana. In an interview with the network, he said the victim, 50-year-old Walter Scott, had been hit by the officer's stun gun before fleeing to avoid further stun gun fire. |

Iran's Khamenei demands all sanctions end when nuclear deal signed Posted: 09 Apr 2015 10:56 AM PDT Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday demanded that all sanctions on Iran be lifted at the same time as any final agreement with world powers on curbing Tehran's nuclear program is concluded. Khamenei, the Islamic Republic's most powerful figure and who has the last say on all state matters, was making his first comments on the interim deal reached last week in the Swiss city of Lausanne. He repeated his faith in President Hassan Rouhani's negotiating team. Everything is in the details, it may be that the deceptive other side wants to restrict us in the details," Khamenei said in a speech broadcast live on state television. |

Video of fatal police shooting may have major impact Posted: 08 Apr 2015 06:45 PM PDT NEW YORK (AP) — Graphic videos have surfaced previously that kindled outrage over police use of force — the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles, last year's chokehold death in New York City. The new video from South Carolina is perhaps the most striking yet — its depiction of a fleeing, unarmed black man being shot in the back by a white policeman so vivid that a murder charge came swiftly. |
