The centre-right Conservatives were projected to win 316 seats compared to 239 for Ed Miliband's centre-left Labour party, in a result that tore up pre-election predictions. Opinion polls had indicated for months that the Conservatives and Labour were virtually tied. If the results are borne out, they could put Britain on a collision course with the European Union as Cameron has promised an in-out referendum on membership.

One woman who sought safety in her home's storm shelter died when it flooded in Wednesday night's storms, Oklahoma police said. The weather system battered a region from Texas to Nebraska and spawned dozens of reported tornadoes on Wednesday. Large parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and North Texas were under flash flood and severe thunderstorm watches on Thursday.

| NSA's phone spying program ruled illegal by appeals court Posted: 07 May 2015 01:05 PM PDT  By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. spying program that systematically collects millions of Americans' phone records is illegal, a federal appeals court ruled on Thursday, putting pressure on Congress to quickly decide whether to replace or end the controversial anti-terrorism surveillance. Ruling on a program revealed by former government security contractor Edward Snowden, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said the Patriot Act did not authorize the National Security Agency to collect Americans' calling records in bulk. Circuit Judge Gerard Lynch wrote for a three-judge panel that Section 215, which addresses the FBI's ability to gather business records, could not be interpreted to have permitted the NSA to collect a "staggering" amount of phone records, contrary to claims by the Bush and Obama administrations.

| FBI warned local police gunman had interest in Texas cartoon event Posted: 07 May 2015 04:48 PM PDT  The FBI warned police in Garland, Texas, about three hours before a shooting at a weekend exhibit of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad that one of the gunmen who launched the failed attack was interested in the event, FBI Director James Comey said on Thursday. The FBI issued a bulletin to the police department saying Elton Simpson had an interest in the Sunday event held in the Dallas suburb but gave no indication that he planned an attack, Comey told reporters in Washington, according to an FBI spokesman. Garland police were not immediately available for comment. Authorities said Simpson and his roommate, Nadir Soofi, of Phoenix were shot and killed by a police officer after they opened fire with assault rifles outside the cartoon event organized by a group that had sponsored anti-Islamic campaigns.

| Final polls show dead heat ahead of British election Posted: 06 May 2015 03:44 PM PDT  The final polls released on the eve of Britain's general election on Thursday showed main rivals Labour and the Conservatives locked in a dead heat. Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party and the Labour party led by Ed Miliband have been neck-and-neck for much of the campaign. The last survey data released before a ban on the publishing of opinion polls comes into force indicated that a flurry of last-minute campaigning to win over undecided voters had failed to sway the race one way or another.
