Former Facebook bad boy Sean Parker trying to do good Posted: 23 Jun 2015 07:30 PM PDT At just 35, Sean Parker has been public enemy No. 1 to the music industry and one of the first "friends" of Facebook, and he's made billions along the way. In 1999, he co-founded Napster, a music-sharing site that attracted millions of users — and enough lawsuits from record labels to shut it down. Five years later, after seeing a site called "The Facebook" on the computer of his roommate's girlfriend at Stanford, he met founder Mark Zuckerberg and soon became the president of Facebook. |
Boston bomber apologizes, admits guilt for deadly 2013 attack Posted: 24 Jun 2015 01:41 PM PDT Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on Wednesday apologized for the deadly 2013 attack at a hearing before a U.S. judge formally sentenced him to death for killing four people and injuring 264 in the bombing and its aftermath. "I am sorry for the lives I have taken, for the suffering that I have caused you, for the damage I have done, irreparable damage," said Tsarnaev, who had sat in silence, his head cast down as two survivors and family members of victims described the attacks' heavy toll on their lives. "In case there is any doubt, I am guilty of this attack, along with my brother," Tsarnaev said, standing at the defense table. |
Confederate symbols of Civil War divide U.S. 150 years on Posted: 24 Jun 2015 04:11 PM PDT By Wayne Hester BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Reuters) - More and more voices across the U.S. South called for banishing the banner of the pro-slavery Confederacy on Wednesday in a fast-growing movement that adds new emotion and tensions to a year of soul-searching over race in America. From Alabama to Mississippi, Louisiana to Tennessee and beyond the South, politicians distanced themselves from Confederate flags and monuments memorializing southern heroes of the 1861-65 War Between the States. Alabama's governor ordered the Confederate flag and three other flags of the Confederacy removed from the grounds of the state's Capitol in Montgomery, a historically significant city in America's civil rights movement where Martin Luther King Jr. led protests in the 1950s. |
Ohio Senate passes bill banning abortion after 20 weeks Posted: 24 Jun 2015 02:30 PM PDT The Ohio Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, following the passage of a similar ban by the Wisconsin Senate this month. The legislation, which passed 23-9, contains a narrow exception for medical emergencies, but not for rape or incest. It would now go to the House, which, like the Senate, is dominated by Republicans. |
