State of emergency called in Ferguson after gunfire mars protests Posted: 10 Aug 2015 03:54 PM PDT Authorities declared a state of emergency in Ferguson, Missouri, on Monday to prevent a repeat of the violence that erupted during protests overnight to mark the police shooting of an unarmed black man one year ago that ignited a national firestorm on race relations. The order was issued for the St. Louis suburb and surrounding areas amid tensions between residents and police after officers shot and critically wounded an 18-year-old man in an exchange of gunfire that marred what had been a day of peaceful demonstrations. Prosecutors charged the man, Tyrone Harris, who was in critical condition in a hospital, with four criminal counts, including "assault on law enforcement" and shooting at a motor vehicle. |
Ohio high court advises judges not to refuse to perform gay marriages Posted: 10 Aug 2015 04:30 PM PDT Judges in Ohio should not refuse to perform same-sex marriages based on personal or religious beliefs, the state's Supreme Court said in an informal, nonbinding opinion released on Monday. The advisory opinion was issued in response to inquiries from judges and a judicial association seeking guidance, after a number of Ohio judges refused to marry same-sex couple or halted civil marriages altogether. The opinion cited the June 26 U.S. Supreme Court Obergefell v Hodges ruling that legalized gay marriage nationwide, effectively invalidating Ohio's law prohibiting marriages not between a man and a woman. |
Texas man accused of killing eight formally charged in Houston court Posted: 10 Aug 2015 10:35 AM PDT Conley, 48, wearing a yellow Harris County Jail uniform and with his hands cuffed in front of him for his court appearance, quietly answered "yes" when asked to confirm his identity at a hearing. Assistant District Attorney Alycia Harvey said Conley, who does not yet have an attorney, has made a statement to authorities about his relationship to the victims, who included two adults and six children between the ages of 6 and 13. |
