U.S. says Iran missile test violated UN resolutions Posted: 16 Oct 2015 12:29 PM PDT The United States will seek action at the UN Security Council after concluding that Iran's recent ballistic missile launch was a "clear violation" of UN resolutions, the US ambassador said Friday. Iran announced Sunday it had successfully tested a new domestically produced long-range missile, which it said was the first that could be guided all the way to targets. "After reviewing the available information, we can confirm that Iran launched on October 10 a medium-range ballistic missile inherently capable of delivering a nuclear weapon," US Ambassador Samantha Power said. |

Palestinians torch Jewish shrine, new protests erupt Posted: 16 Oct 2015 10:24 AM PDT Palestinians torched a site revered by Jews in the West Bank in an incident that threatened to further inflame two weeks of deadly unrest, as fresh protests erupted Friday. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, under pressure over recent comments that some have labelled incitement, quickly condemned the fire at Joseph's Tomb, in the northern city of Nablus. The arson came as Palestinians called for a "Friday of revolution" against Israel, and police barred men under 40 from attending the main weekly prayers at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque, seeking to keep young protesters away. |

United CEO suffers heart attack, shares drop even lower Posted: 16 Oct 2015 03:40 PM PDT United Continental Holdings Inc's new chief executive has suffered a heart attack, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday, barely a month after he took on the job of improving the airline's profitability and reputation. The board at United - the No. 2 U.S. carrier by capacity - was informed "promptly" after Oscar Munoz was taken to hospital, the person said. "We're still gathering information about his medical condition and prognosis." United's previous chief executive left while federal authorities were conducting an investigation involving the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. |
U.S. House Benghazi panel grills Clinton aide for six hours Posted: 16 Oct 2015 04:53 PM PDT By Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Turmoil swirled again around the Republican-controlled Benghazi committee on Friday as it questioned a senior aide to Hillary Clinton, prompting fresh accusations that the panel was created to damage the Democratic front-runner's presidential campaign. In a six-hour closed door interview, members and staff sought answers from Huma Abedin, for years a close confidante of Clinton. Abedin has served as the former secretary of state's assistant at the time of the 2012 attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans. |
Lamar Odom reported to emerge from coma three days after collapse Posted: 16 Oct 2015 03:43 PM PDT Former pro basketball star Lamar Odom remained hospitalized but was reported to be showing signs of recovery on Friday, three days after he collapsed at a Nevada house of prostitution where authorities said he had been using cocaine. Odom, 35, the estranged husband of reality TV personality Khloe Kardashian, has emerged from a coma and has been removed from a ventilator that was assisting his breathing, the E! online and television outlet reported, citing an unnamed source. E! also reported that the 35-year-old National Basketball Association veteran had opened his eyes, saw Kardashian at his bedside and said to her, "Hey, baby," then gave her a thumbs-up sign before falling back to sleep. |
