Chicago protesters call for mayor to step down over police brutality Posted: 18 Dec 2015 03:39 PM PST Several hundred protesters marched through downtown Chicago on Friday evening, calling on Mayor Rahm Emanuel to step down over complaints of abusive policing and a lack of accountability in the police department. The protesters chanted "No justice, no peace" and wore T-shirts reading "Jail Rahm Now." It was the latest in a wave of peaceful and mostly small protests in Chicago set off by the release of a video of a white police officer shooting dead 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was black, in October 2014. |
Tips coming in for Texas affluenza teen who may have left country: sheriff Posted: 18 Dec 2015 02:04 PM PST Numerous tips have been reported on the possible whereabouts of a Texas teen from a wealthy family suspected of violating a probation deal that kept him out of prison for killing four people in a drunken-driving crash, a sheriff said on Friday. The U.S. Marshals Service has joined Texas officials in the hunt for Ethan Couch, 18, who has a warrant out for his arrest and was placed on Tarrant County's most-wanted list. Law enforcement was checking on reports that Couch may have left the state or even the country after going missing earlier this month, shortly after a video came out showing him at a beer-pong party, in likely violation of his probation. |
Virginia county closes schools as Islam assignment prompts backlash Posted: 18 Dec 2015 01:05 PM PST Schools in a Virginia county closed on Friday as a safety precaution after a class assignment asking students to practice Arabic calligraphy using a Muslim statement of faith sparked an angry outcry from parents and threats against school officials. Augusta County Public Schools officials said no specific threat had been made against students, but some calls and emails received by the district posed a risk of harm to school officials. Some messages to the Virginia school district contained profane and graphic content, including a call to behead the teacher who gave the assignment, Augusta County Sheriff Randy Fisher said. |
