U.S. President Barack Obama talks to Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval as he arrives at McCarran International Airport in Las VegasBy Richard Cowan and Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, a moderate Republican, took himself out of consideration for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday as Senate Republicans held firm to their vow not to act on any nominee by President Barack Obama for the job. Asked if the White House was disappointed by Sandoval's decision, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at a briefing, "He's obviously entitled to make decisions about his own career." Sandoval's name surfaced as a possible nominee on Wednesday but Senate Republicans quickly said they still would not act on any Obama nominee to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the Feb. 13 death of long-serving conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

U.S. Secretary of State Kerry testifies before a House Appropriations subcommittee in WashingtonBy Patricia Zengerle and Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry urged Congress on Thursday not to rush to renew the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), a broad U.S. law imposing sanctions over Iran's nuclear and missile programs that expires at the end of the year. "I wouldn't advise that for a number of reasons," Kerry told the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee at a hearing on the State Department's budget. Many lawmakers have been pushing to renew the ISA quickly, to send a message to Tehran that Congress is still taking a hard line over its nuclear program, missile development and human rights record.

Apple unlocking case not 'trailblazer' for legal precedent: FBI chief

Posted: 25 Feb 2016 07:36 AM PST

FBI Director Comey attends a news conference on terrorism after speaking at the NYPD Shield Conference in the Manhattan borough of New YorkBy Dustin Volz WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The case involving a court order demanding Apple help the FBI unlock the iPhone linked to one of the San Bernardino shooters is "unlikely to be a trailblazer" for setting a legal precedent in future cases, FBI Director James Comey told a congressional panel Thursday. While the case "will be instructive for other courts," broader policy questions about reasonable law enforcement access to encrypted data will likely need to be resolved by Congress and others, Comey said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking Apple's help in accessing a county-owned iPhone 5C used by Syed Rizwan Farook, who along with his wife went on a shooting rampage in December that killed 14 and wounded 22.
