Panama alarmed as leak threatens vital finance sector Posted: 04 Apr 2016 02:35 PM PDT Alarm spread through Panama on Monday as concerns rose that a massive data leak from one of its legal firms could threaten its vital financial services sector that relies on offshore business. President Juan Carlos Varela vowed that "what we are going to do is defend the image of our country," while worried representatives from the financial and associated legal sector held an emergency meeting with the government. The so-called Panama Papers leak has revealed that politicians, celebrities and criminals used the breached law firm, Mossack Fonseca, to create offshore entities for their assets -- in some cases to illegally launder money or evade taxes. |

Syria monastery ravaged by IS was symbol of coexistence Posted: 04 Apr 2016 12:38 PM PDT The Syrian army on Sunday drove out the jihadists, but the damage they have caused in a place that was once a symbol of religious tolerance seems almost irreparable. IS razed the fifth-century church in August 2015 using explosives and bulldozers, as they have done with shrines and other religious buildings elsewhere, "under the pretext that people worshipped a deity other than God", according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Under the broken stone cover of a sarcophagus lay the skull and bones of Mar or Saint Elian -- a Christian from Homs province who was slain by the Romans for refusing to renounce his faith. |
U.S. says it killed IS militant who killed Marine in Iraq Posted: 04 Apr 2016 06:15 AM PDT The anti-Islamic State coalition conducting airstrikes in Iraq and Syria has killed the IS militant believed responsible for an attack on U.S. troops in northern Iraq last month that left a Marine dead, it said on Sunday. Militant Jasim Khadijah, a former Iraqi officer not considered a high-value target, was killed by a drone strike overnight in northern Iraq, coalition spokesman U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren told reporters in Baghdad. "We have information (that) he was a rocket expert, he controlled these attacks," said Warren, referring to the shelling of a base used by U.S. troops near the town of Makhmour, located between Mosul and Kirkuk. |
Prosecutors open probes as world's wealthy deny 'Panama Papers' links Posted: 04 Apr 2016 04:20 PM PDT By Kylie MacLellan and Elida Moreno LONDON/PANAMA CITY (Reuters) - Governments across the world began investigating possible financial wrongdoing by the rich and powerful on Monday after a leak of four decades of documents from a Panamanian law firm that specialized in setting up offshore companies. The "Panama Papers" revealed financial arrangements of politicians and public figures including friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin, relatives of the prime ministers of Britain, Iceland and Pakistan, and the president of Ukraine. While holding money in offshore companies is not illegal, journalists who received the leaked documents said they could provide evidence of wealth hidden for tax evasion, money laundering, sanctions busting, drug deals or other crimes. |
Exclusive: Democrats Clinton, Sanders promise to include Latinos in cabinet Posted: 04 Apr 2016 10:23 AM PDT By Luciana Lopez NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders vowed to nominate Latinos into key cabinet posts in their administrations if elected, according to their answers to a questionnaire organized by the nation's largest Latino coalition. The 20-question survey was submitted by the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda to all U.S. presidential candidates on Feb. 25, but received responses only from the two Democratic contenders and none from the Republicans, according to the results reviewed by Reuters. Latinos and African-Americans have emerged as key voting blocs in the Democratic race for the White House nomination so far, and are likely to play a large role in the outcomes of big contests looming in New York and California. |

At $57 a share, the deal represents a premium of about 86 percent from Virgin America's stock price before reports in March that the company was considering a sale. Analysts characterized the price as steep but said the merger would strengthen Alaska Air. |
Exclusive: Makers took big price increases on widely used U.S. drugs Posted: 04 Apr 2016 12:50 PM PDT By Caroline Humer NEW YORK (Reuters) - Major drug companies took hefty price increases in the U.S., in some cases more than doubling listed charges, for widely used medications over the past five years, a Reuters analysis of proprietary data found. Together, the price increases on drugs for arthritis, high cholesterol, asthma and other common problems added billions in costs for consumers, employers and government health programs. Extraordinary price hikes by two small companies, Turing Pharmaceuticals and Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc , drew new attention to drug costs. |
Law firm in Panama Papers leak is secretive, with big clients Posted: 04 Apr 2016 07:38 AM PDT Mossack Fonseca, the Panama-based law firm at the heart of the "Panama Papers" scandal, is a discreet outfit with a roster of big-name clients and a quiet reputation for hiding money from the tax man. Politicians, sports stars, celebrities -- many were named in the 11 million pages of documents, according to information starting to be released by the International Consortium of Investigating Journalists (ICIJ), which is parsing the data. The revelation detailing the off-shore structures of many wealthy clients is a "crime" and an "attack" on Panama, the law firm maintains. |

The allegations in the leaks released globally over the weekend first surfaced in Iceland last month. |
Migrants sent back from Greece arrive in Turkey under EU deal Posted: 04 Apr 2016 08:47 AM PDT By Dasha Afanasieva and Karolina Tagaris DIKILI, Turkey/LESBOS, Greece (Reuters) - The first migrants deported from Greek islands under a disputed EU-Turkey deal were shipped back to Turkey on Monday in a drive to shut down the main route used by more than a million people fleeing war and poverty to reach Europe in the last year. Under a pact criticized by refugee agencies and human rights campaigners, Ankara will take back all migrants and refugees who cross the Aegean to enter Greece illegally, including Syrians. In return, the European Union will take in thousands of Syrian refugees directly from Turkey and reward it with money, visa-free travel and progress in its EU membership negotiations. |
