Nyquist, who had won a record $3.3 million heading into the Derby, extended his unbeaten record to 8-0 with a smooth trip under jockey Mario Gutierrez. Nyquist pulled away from Gun Runner down the stretch and then held off a closing charge by Exaggerator to win the first leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown series for 3-year-olds.

Despite speculation, Guzman's transfer had "absolutely nothing" to do with his possible extradition or deportation to the United States -- where he faces extradition requests by courts in California and Texas for homicide and drug trafficking -- Eduardo Sanchez, spokesman for the president's office, told AFP. The authorities said they moved Guzman to prevent any escape attempt during construction to strengthen his maximum-security prison in Altiplano, 90 kilometers (55 miles) from the capital Mexico City.

The fire that has already prompted the evacuation of 88,000 people from the city of Fort McMurray was on its way to doubling in size on Saturday, the seventh day of what is expected to be the costliest natural disaster in Canada's history. Police escorted another convoy of evacuees out of the oil sands region north of Fort McMurray, taking them on a harrowing journey through burned out parts of the city and billowing smoke.

| CBS report: Russian gold medalists used steroids at Sochi Olympics Posted: 07 May 2016 07:20 AM PDT  (Reuters) - CBS News says the former head of Russia's drug testing laboratory Grigory Rodchenkov has told whistleblower Vitaly Stepanov that at least four of Russia's gold medal winners at the 2014 Winter Olympics were using steroids, according to an interview to be aired on Sunday. Stepanov, who previously worked for Russia's anti-doping agency and is now living in the United States, told the investigative program "60 Minutes" that Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of the drug laboratory, had evidence of the use of banned substances at the Games in Sochi, Russia. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said the body was aware that Sunday's program would "include content regarding further doping allegations".

| President-elect or not, Trump is going to trial this year in Trump U fraud case Posted: 06 May 2016 05:35 PM PDT  A federal judge in San Diego set the stage on Friday for what could be one of the strangest presidential transitions in history: He ordered that Donald Trump must go to trial starting Nov. 28 in a civil case in which he is accused of defrauding students who attended Trump University. "No doubt this will be a challenge … we're in unchartered waters," said Donald Petrocelli, Trump's lead lawyer in the case, when asked later how his client — if elected in November — would be able to balance preparing to take over the presidency with taking the witness stand in a trial that could run almost until the eve of the following January's inauguration. But Petrocelli said Trump was fully prepared to testify and would even attend "most, if not all" of the trial in order to vindicate himself.
