Blind sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman dies in US prison facility Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:36 PM PST Blind sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the Egyptian-born cleric linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, died Saturday of natural causes in a US prison facility, the Justice Department said. Abdel Rahman was serving a life sentence on several terrorism-related charges at a Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina. The sheikh was seen as a jihadist spiritual leader even after his conviction in 1995 for conspiring to bomb New York landmarks, including the United Nations, and assassinate the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. |
Norma McCorvey, plaintiff in Roe v. Wade abortion ruling, dies at 69 Posted: 18 Feb 2017 04:27 PM PST (Reuters) - Norma McCorvey, the anonymous plaintiff known as "Jane Roe" in the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion, died on Saturday at the age of 69, a journalist close to McCorvey said. McCorvey died on Saturday morning of heart failure at an assisted living home in Katy, Texas, Joshua Prager, a journalist who is writing a book about the ruling, said in an email. McCorvey lent her real name to supporters of the abortion-rights movement in the 1980s. |

Hundreds of Cubans deported after US immigration status end: Cuba Posted: 18 Feb 2017 10:52 AM PST More than 680 Cubans have been deported back to Cuba since the United States ended its decades-old policy giving them preferred immigrant status in January, state media reported Saturday. According to official Cuban reports, 683 people have been sent back to the Caribbean island from the United States, or from Mexico, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands, where they were crossing in a bid to reach the US border. On January 12, then-president Barack Obama scrapped with immediate effect a 1995 policy that had given Cubans near-automatic entry to the United States if they managed to set foot on American soil, regardless of their visa status. |
Lincoln, Washington and Roosevelt ranked top three U.S. presidents Posted: 17 Feb 2017 11:14 PM PST (Reuters) - Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt were ranked as the top three U.S. presidents in history respectively while Barack Obama entered the rankings in the 12th spot, based on a survey of historians released on Friday. Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower rounded out the top five of 43 presidents in U.S. history, a survey of historians' rankings of presidential leadership found. "Once again the big three are Lincoln, Washington and FDR - as it should be. |
Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:41 PM PST Earlier this month, British members of Parliament (MPs) overwhelmingly voted to back Brexit, citing deference to the will of the people. Speaking at an event for Open Britain, which wants Britain to maintain access to the single market, Tony Blair declared that the Brexit discussion was far from over. The task for voters who want to remain in the EU, Mr. Blair said, is to persuade Leave voters to change their minds, thus forcing a reversal on Britain's vote to leave the European Union. |

Jason Chaffetz and Mitch McConnell are the new 'Hardy Boys' except much worse Posted: 18 Feb 2017 08:00 AM PST Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has been doing a really great job not investigating some of the major controversies surrounding the Trump White House. Mitch McConnell, the Majority Leader of the Senate, has also impressively managed to avoid publicly denouncing or questioning even the most flagrantly unconstitutional executive orders signed by the POTUS. SEE ALSO: Wow, Obama's outgoing letter to Trump speaks volumes With their impressive the-opposite-of-mystery-solving skills on full display for the American public, we thought it'd be fitting to reimagine the two GOP leaders as the straight-laced Hardy Boys. Zimbabwe's Mugabe says he is people's choice for 2018 election Posted: 19 Feb 2017 06:02 AM PST By Cris Chinaka HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's people and the ruling ZANU-PF party see no viable alternative candidate to President Robert Mugabe for general elections in 2018, state media quoted him as saying on Sunday. "The people, you know, would want to judge everyone else on the basis of President Mugabe as the criteria," Mugabe, who is Africa's oldest leader, said. Mugabe has been in power in the southern African country since 1980 and in December his party confirmed him as its candidate for the next presidential election expected in mid-2018, when he will be 94. |

February 18 is also the anniversary of The Gambia's independence from Britain, but many are also calling the day the birth of a third republic following the ousting of Yahya Jammeh at the ballot box. Tens of thousands packed the venue, singing and dancing, an AFP correspondent said. |

Expect more fake news from Russia, top NATO general says Posted: 18 Feb 2017 05:21 AM PST By Robin Emmott MUNICH (Reuters) - Russia was behind a false report of a rape by German soldiers in Lithuania that was intended to undermine support for NATO's new eastern force, a senior NATO general said on Saturday, warning Europe to expect more such "fake news". Petr Pavel, who heads NATO's military committee, said he also hoped to hold the first telephone call in more than two years with Russia's military chiefs in coming weeks. |
This futuristic ATM means you’ll never have to go into a bank again Posted: 19 Feb 2017 06:00 AM PST Fifty years ago, the ATM was one of the first robots to start down the long path of stealing jobs. Even the name -- Automated Teller Machine -- shows that it was explicitly designed to put bank tellers out of a job. ATMs have become far more sophisticated since their introduction, but their main function of dispensing cash hasn't really changed. So, for ATMs themselves to remain relevant as banks increasingly go online, there needs to be change. NCR, a company you likely haven't heard of but almost certainly interact with frequently, has just released its latest take on the ATM. Called the SelfServ 80, it's likely to have payment processing conference attendees all aflutter -- but there's a reason you should care too. Rather than just dispensing cash, the machine uses a 19-inch touchscreen and video confrencing to let you do virtually anything you'd do in a regular bank. Apply for credit cards or loans can theoretically all happen without ever speaking to a person in the flesh: all the communication can happen with a bank advisor via fancy Skype. Only ever talking to a bank advisor through a screen does sound like an awfully dystopian future. But the silver lining here is that by centralizing the bank tellers, banks could offer services for much longer hours, and you'd never need to wait in line to see one of your branch's two tellers ever again. The ATM will start rolling out this year, as according to NCR "several of the largest banks in the world, along with many community banks, have signed on for initial delivery contracts." |

France denounces cyberattacks blamed on Moscow Posted: 18 Feb 2017 06:57 PM PST Suspected Russian cyberattacks on the French presidential campaign are "unacceptable", France's foreign minister said Sunday, adding it was clear that pro-Europe candidate Emmanuel Macron was being targeted. A spokesman for Macron, who is currently riding high in the polls, has accused Moscow of being behind a flurry of cyberattacks on his campaign website and email servers over the past month. "It's enough to see which candidates, Marine Le Pen or Francois Fillon, Russia expresses preference for in the French electoral campaign," Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said in an interview with Journal du Dimanche. |

U.S. inquiries into Russian election hacking include three FBI probes Posted: 18 Feb 2017 01:30 PM PST By Joseph Menn SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is pursuing at least three separate probes relating to alleged Russian hacking of the U.S. presidential elections, according to five current and former government officials with direct knowledge of the situation. While the fact that the FBI is investigating had been reported previously by the New York Times and other media, these officials shed new light on both the precise number of inquires and their focus. The FBI's Pittsburgh field office, which runs many cyber security investigations, is trying to identify the people behind breaches of the Democratic National Committee's computer systems, the officials said. |

How to install the genius media app that Apple banned from the App Store Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:00 PM PST What is Kodi and why should one want to install on the iPhone or any other iOS device? It's a versatile media player that's already quite popular with the crowds. You may have used it on other devices back when it was called XBMC. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of application that Apple allows in the App Store, so you can't really enjoy it on iOS devices unless you're willing to jailbreak the phone, or pull off other tricks that would let you sideload the app. If you're looking to install Kodi on the iPhone 7 or any other kind of iOS device without jailbreaking, then you're in luck. It looks like such a method is already available. The method does work, and it's as shady as you can expect. But if you can't go without Kodi in your life, and you don't want to jailbreak the iPhone 7, or can't find a method that jailbreaks the phone, then you could always go for this option. Discovered by Kodi Tips the trick involves navigating to a shady site — just because it's in a language you don't understand — and downloading an app to your iPhone. Once that's done, an error message will appear when you'll try to run Kodi. However, you can fix it by simply choosing to trust the application from the phone's Settings menu. Check out Kodi Tips full instructions if you really want to go through with the procedure. Finally, if all else fails, there's one other type of Kodi install for the iPhone that you can try, which doesn't require a jailbreak either. You have to pretend you're an app developer and use Apple's Xcode to get the app running on your iOS device — Macworld has all the instructions, assuming the method is still available. |
Melania Trump prays, assails critics in Florida speech Posted: 18 Feb 2017 06:32 PM PST First Lady Melania Trump, usually a demure and soft-spoken presence at her husband's side, broke with form, reciting the Lord's Prayer before issuing a scathing rebuke of his enemies and her critics at a campaign-style stop in Florida. Preceding her husband on the dais at a rally in the city of Melbourne not far from Orlando, the first lady started her remarks with the words "let us pray," before beginning her recitation of the well-known Christian prayer. "The America we envision is one that works for all Americans and where all Americans can work and succeed," she said. |

US student debt tops $1.31 trillion: Does Betsy DeVos have a plan? Posted: 18 Feb 2017 05:03 PM PST Student loans were the leading cause for a substantial increase in household debt last year, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said Thursday. While the high balance of US student debt is not news anymore, the new record-high $1.31 trillion balance, up 2.4 percent in the fourth quarter, is another reminder of the severity of a problem that has cast a shadow over the nation in recent years. During her confirmation hearing, now-Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos suggested a vision for higher education that might not require as much student debt. |
U.S. pushes Beijing to keep up pressure on North Korea Posted: 18 Feb 2017 07:44 PM PST Washington urged Beijing to keep pressure on North Korea to return to talks aimed at preventing Pyongyang from making further advances in its weapons program in violation of U.N. resolutions. China's Commerce Ministry said on Saturday that it would suspend all imports of coal from North Korea starting Feb. 19. The announcement came as part of Beijing's efforts to implement international sanctions against the country. |

Head of South Sudan's military courts resigns, rebukes government Posted: 18 Feb 2017 03:37 AM PST By Katharine Houreld NAIROBI (Reuters) - The head of South Sudan's military courts has resigned, saying high-level interference made it impossible to discipline soldiers accused of rape and murder amid the nation's civil war, according to a letter seen by Reuters on Saturday. The resignation of Col. Khalid Ono Loki is the third high-level departure in a week. A highly respected general stood down seven days ago, citing ethnic favouritism in the military and rampant human rights abuses. |
Finally, the accessory every Apple Watch owner has been waiting for is here Posted: 18 Feb 2017 07:30 AM PST The Apple Watch is a class leader in so many ways, from software and hardware design to style and, of course, sales. One annoying this about the watch is the charger, however. The actual charging mechanism is fantastic, featuring a brilliant implementation of wireless charging that makes refueling the Apple Watch a cinch. The annoying part, however, is that the device uses a proprietary charger that's unlike anything used by other Apple devices. That means yet another charger that you have to unplug and take with you when you travel (and it just so happens to sport the longest cable on Earth, to boot, which makes it even more annoying to travel with). Well guess what: the Apple Watch accessory you've been waiting for is finally here. Check out the Ugreen Wireless Magnetic Power Bank Charger for Apple Watch, an MFI certified portable charger with a built-in wireless connector for the Apple Watch. It's well worth the $60 price tag, but it's on sale right now for just $47.99 if you use the coupon code NVGRLYED at checkout. Some key details from the product page:

Trump's White House: Five takeaways from Friday Posted: 17 Feb 2017 06:26 PM PST After a rollercoaster first month in the White House Donald Trump jaunted south on Friday, holding a campaign-style event with Boeing to cast himself as a defender of US jobs. The Senate meanwhile confirmed Trump's controversial pick to direct the Environmental Protection Agency, installing as the federal environmental steward a climate change skeptic who has repeatedly sued the US agency he will now lead. |
