Bangkok 'unique' despite street stall edict: Thai tourism bossBangkok's street food culture will survive a crackdown on vendors, Thailand's tourism chief vowed Thursday, assuring travellers that a city renowned for its chaotic charm was not being remodelled into a Singapore-lite. The City Hall stunned Thais and tourists alike this week with plans to bar the capital's world-famous food stalls from all main roads to reclaim pavements for the public. On Thursday the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) pushed back against fears that Bangkok was being gentrified in the image of Singapore -- a city that relishes orderliness but is often characterised as tame compared to its Southeast Asian rivals.

North Koreans have been spotted playing volleyball at its nuclear test site

Posted: 20 Apr 2017 12:55 AM PDT

North Koreans have been spotted playing volleyball at its nuclear test siteNorth Korea's military has been spotted seemingly playing a game of volleyball at the main Punggye-ri nuclear test site. Satellite images of the site appear to show two six-player teams facing each other, with a net between them. Joseph Bermudez, an analyst for non-profit 38 North, which first noticed the pictures, said multiple games were going on at the facility — at the administrative area, the support area, the command centre, and at the guard barracks. A possible volleyball net seen in the command center areaImage: DigitalGlobe/Getty Images A probable volleyball game seen at the guard barracks at Punggye-riImage: DigitalGlobe/Getty ImagesThe people appear to be standing in formations consistent with volleyball games, he added. But if you thought the North Koreans were taking a break, it's more likely that the games were staged knowing the outside world is looking. PUNGGYE-RI NUCLEAR TEST SITE, NORTH KOREA - APRIL 16, 2017. Figure 4. Probable volleyball game seen at the command center support area. (Photo DigitalGlobe/38 North via Getty Images)Image: DigitalGlobe/Getty ImagesAnalysts told the New York Times that the games were probably intended to send a message, as North Korea knows that the Punggye-ri test site is under intense scrutiny. The games could be North Korea's way of indicating that it's pausing its controversial nuclear missile testing activity — or that it's making it seem like it has. Both China and the U.S. have raised condemnation of the hermit country's nuclear tests in recent weeks, as Trump places pressure on the North to halt its missile activity. "While strongly suggestive of the completion of preparations for a sixth nuclear test, the imagery alone does not provide any definitive evidence of the installation of a nuclear device or indication of the specific timing for such an event," Bermudez told Mashable. Volleyball games are a normal occurrence at Punggye-ri, according to Melissa Hanham, an analyst at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. The game is a popular sport in North Korea.  "It doesn't mean anything other than people are there and [that] they are bored," Hanham said in an email to Mashable.  Both Hanham and Bermudez agreed that the site could still be ready for a nuclear test.  38 North described the site as "primed and ready" on April 12, and a UN representative of the reclusive dictatorship confirmed that a new nuclear test was under preparation.  Analysts speculated that the reclusive dictatorship could trigger a nuclear test to mark the 105th birth anniversary of the country's founding leader, Kim Il-Sung, which occurred last Saturday. Kim Il-Sung's grandson, Kim Jong-un, is North Korea's current leader. "The ultimate choice as to whether to test, or not to test, rests solely in the hands of Kim Jong-un," Bermudez said. Microsoft is trying to make passwords obsolete, and it might succeed

Microsoft is trying to make passwords obsolete, and it might succeed

Passwords are annoying, clumsy, easily beaten (for the most part), and an absolutely antiquated form of security. They also happen to be the primary way we secure our most precious information today. Microsoft wants to change that with a new app feature that basically removes passwords from the equation entirely. It's part of the Microsoft Authenticator app, and it just might work.

The app's new ability essentially enables the second layer of a two-factor authentication system, but instead of signing in with a password and then confirming your identity via an app prompt on your smartphone, the password isn't used at all.

Once you have Microsoft Authenticator installed, you can opt to use it as the primary sign-in option for any of the supported logins. Then, when you need to sign in, an app alert will pop up on your phone asking you to approve the action. Tap to approve and that's it, you're in, password free.

The new feature is clearly a response to the newly streamlined Google Authenticator app which makes signing in easier thanks to a tap-to-verify system. However, by eliminating passwords entirely, Microsoft is actually making the barrier to logins even shorter, for better or worse. The "worse" part, of course, is that by taking passwords out of the picture, logins can be completely simply by possessing a person's smartphone, rather than a combination of the password and secondary authentication system. Using the new Authenticator feature should still be significantly more secure than using a password alone, so it's still a net improvement over what most users currently rely on.

Ocean drift analysis shows MH370 most likely in new search area: Australian scientists

Ocean drift analysis shows MH370 most likely in new search area: Australian scientistsA new ocean debris drift analysis shows missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 is most likely within a proposed expanded search area rejected by Australia and Malaysia in January, the Australian government's scientific agency said on Friday. The new debris drift analysis suggests the missing Boeing 777 may be located in a much smaller 25,000 sq km (9,652 sq mile) zone within that proposed northern search area. "This new work leaves us more confident in our findings," Dr David Griffin, a principal research scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) said in a statement.

Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappucino didn’t kill me

Posted: 20 Apr 2017 10:28 AM PDT

Starbucks' Unicorn Frappucino didn't kill me Drinking a pink, purple, and neon blue beverage at 7 o'clock in the morning isn't something I'd ever recommend, but when Starbucks spontaneously launched its new Unicorn Frappuccino with the promise that it would be gone in less than a week, my hand was forced. I've ordered the beast and consumed it over the course of an hour or so, and now I feel compelled to offer you my opinion on it, along with more information about my own personal coffee preferences than you'd ever need or want to know. I'm not ashamed to admit that I have a pretty basic, straightforward coffee routine. I keep bottled cold brew on hand at all times, but on most mornings I find myself awake early enough to make the short trip to the nearest Starbucks and order one there. I'm not sure why that's my habit, and I can't say the Starbucks cold brew is any better than the stuff I buy from the grocery store, but when you work from home it's nice to start your day with something other than heading straight to your home office. I tell you all this because I want you to know just how big of a departure the purple-pink drink is from my typical morning fare. Going from a no-sugar, no-cream coffee beverage to an all-cream, all-sugar Disney-colored cup of diabetes juice is obviously pretty drastic. And so, my first sips went about as well as I expected. When you first get the drink it's a pleasant dark purple color with blue drizzle and some insanely sour "fairy powders" sprinkled on top. The creamy concoction is very sweet, with a cotton candy flavor that is somehow addicting and revolting at the same time. It's basically like drinking half-melted whipped cream with even more sugar mixed in. As you drink it, the whipped cream on top mixes with the equally sugary frozen cream underneath and turns the purple to a bright pink. The blue drizzle, which is apparently very, very sour, kind of clings to the side of the cup until the very end, when it finally joins the party and turns the last few sips into a confusing mix of too sweet and too sour. The Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino — which, according to the signage at my local Starbucks, is only available "if you believe" — is about as far removed from coffee as you can get. There's no caffeine, but there is plenty of sugar (59g in a medium) and that is probably more than enough fuel to get your brain going. If you want to wear it as a badge of honor, go ahead and pick one up, especially if you're accustomed to ridiculously sugary morning drinks. If you choose to pass, you're not missing much, aside from a bout of 9 am gut rot.
