Swiss drugs giant Novartis likely bribed 'thousands' in Greece: minister Posted: 07 Apr 2017 03:36 AM PDT Greece's justice minister on Friday said Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis had likely bribed "thousands" of doctors and civil servants to promote its products, amid an ongoing probe. "A great number of state officials are implicated... from what I'm beginning to realise from reports, it must be thousands who were directly bribed from Switzerland," Stavros Kontonis told state agency ANA radio. "National health service doctors and state officials were bribed to promote drugs in an illegal and anti-scientific manner," Kontonis said. |

Congo's Kabila names opposition figure Tshibala prime minister Posted: 07 Apr 2017 11:36 PM PDT By Aaron Ross DAKAR (Reuters) - Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila named a former member of the largest opposition party as prime minister on Friday, a move likely to further divide Kabila's opponents after talks to negotiate his exit from power broke down. A statement from the presidency named Bruno Tshibala as prime minister in a new transitional government meant to organise a presidential election by year-end following Kabila's refusal to step down when his mandate expired in December. Opponents of Kabila, who has ruled Congo since his father's assassination in 2001, suspect he intends to repeatedly delay elections until he can organise a referendum to let himself stand for a third term, as his counterparts in neighbouring Congo Republic and Rwanda have done. |

U.S. soldier killed in Afghanistan amid operations against Islamic State: U.S. Posted: 08 Apr 2017 11:55 AM PDT A U.S. soldier was killed while conducting operations against Islamic State in Afghanistan late on Saturday, a U.S. military spokesman said in a message posted on Twitter. "The soldier was mortally wounded late Saturday during an operation in Nangarhar Province" in eastern Afghanistan, U.S. Navy Captain Bill Salvin said in a message on the official Twitter account of the NATO-led Resolute Support mission. The soldier was a Special Forces operator, Salvin told Reuters separately. |

Hillary Clinton calls for U.S. to bomb Syrian air fields Posted: 06 Apr 2017 06:18 PM PDT By Barbara Goldberg NEW YORK (Reuters) - In her first interview since her stunning presidential election defeat by Republican rival Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton on Thursday called for the United States to bomb Syrian air fields. Clinton, in an interview at the Women in the World Summit in New York, also called Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election a theft more damaging than Watergate. Asked whether she now believes that failing to take a tougher stand against Syria was her worst foreign policy mistake as secretary of state under President Barack Obama, Clinton said she favored more aggressive action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. |

After killing privacy, net neutrality is the FCC’s next target Posted: 07 Apr 2017 06:01 PM PDT The Trump-era Federal Communications Commission lost no time in rolling back Obama-era privacy rules that prevented internet providers from collecting and selling customer data without consent. Now that the motion repealing those rules has been signed and sealed by President Trump, the FCC's Chairman is reportedly eyeing his next target: net neutrality.
According to Reuters sources, FCC chair Aji Pai met on Tuesday with representatives of major telecoms companies to discuss his plans to roll back net neutrality rules. Pai, an ex-Verizon lawyer, is reportedly committed to ensuring an open internet, but feels that net neutrality rules passed by the Obama administration went "too far." Under former FCC chair Tom Wheeler, the FCC classified internet providers as Title II utilities, or "common carriers." Classifying ISPs as utilities allows the FCC to make rules that force ISPs to conform to net neutrality. It prevents ISPs from discriminating between different types of data going over their networks -- a byte is a byte, regardless of whether it comes from Netflix or AT&T's own video streaming service. Proponents of net neutrality worry that without strict rules in place, ISPs will use their near-monopoly power to discriminate between different services and websites. For example, large video streaming services like Netflix could pay for preferential access to customers, meaning its videos stream faster than competitors. In turn, that would prevent competition for any startup that wants to challenge Netflix -- or any other internet-based startup, for that matter. ISPs say that the rules are overly burdensome, and that they can just pinkie-swear to uphold net neutrality instead. That's what Pai reportedly asked for in his meeting with telecoms groups: he'll repeal net neutrality rules, provided that telecoms companies promise really hard to be good. Pai's proposal to overturn net neutrality rules is said to be nearly ready to go, with an initial unveil sometime in April and a vote in May or June. |
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid: full production to start today for plug-in minivan Posted: 07 Apr 2017 07:00 AM PDT Unlike any other minivan, however, its large battery pack gives it 33 miles of EPA-rated electric range, and it can drive largely on battery alone despite its size, its seven seats, and its gaping cargo capacity. For several weeks, eager shoppers have asked this site and others whether the Pacifica Hybrid was a "real vehicle" or just a promotional exercise. According to the Detroit Free Press in an article published yesterday, it's real, it's going into "full retail" production today, though Chrysler has been building small numbers since December 1. |

"Congress must live up to its Constitutional responsibility to debate an Authorization of the Use of Military Force against a sovereign nation," Pelosi wrote in the letter sent Friday morning. A massive asteroid is going to zip past Earth later this month Posted: 07 Apr 2017 04:12 PM PDT The universe never lets us here on Earth go very long before reminding us that we're really just a random dice roll away from global catastrophe. The next timely reminder will happen on April 19th when asteroid 2014 JO25 will cruise by our planet at a relatively safe distance of roughly 1.1 million miles. That distance, while relatively comfortable, is still pretty close, especially when you realize how large the rock actually is.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory describes 2014 JO25 as being approximately 2,000 feet wide, or about 650 meters across, which is a little more than two-fifths of a mile. That's a pretty large chunk of rock, and NASA says it's the largest asteroid to come that close to Earth since 2004, with the next similar flyby predicted to occur in 2027 when asteroid 1999 AN10, measured at about a half mile in width, makes an appearance at a distance of 236,000 miles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cItnmeZGxZM For a few nights following April 19th, amateur astronomers may be able to catch a glimpse of 2014 JO25 thanks to it gaining brightness, though it will still be somewhat difficult to spot. This particular asteroid isn't expected to come this close to our planet again for another 500 years or more. April 19th will also mark the appearance of a comet for some star gazers who happen to live in the right place. Comet PanSTARSS (C/2015 ER61) will be at its nearest point to Earth that day, though it'll still be a very distant 109 million miles away. Having gained a lot of brightness since its discovery in 2015, the comet can now be seen with binoculars at specific times of the day. |
Hyundai, Kia recall 1.2 million vehicles to prevent premature engine failure Posted: 07 Apr 2017 07:41 AM PDT Hyundai and its South Korean sibling, Kia, are recalling nearly 1.2 million cars and crossovers from the 2011 to 2014 model years. Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the engines in some of those vehicles may have an increased likelihood of stalling, which could dramatically increase the risk of accidents. The engines suffer from two problems, both of which stem from flawed manufacturing processes. NHTSA's defect report on the Kia vehicles affected by the recall explains that after the engines' crankshafts were machined, their oil passages may not have been completely cleared of metallic debris. Complicating matters is that the engines' crankpins were manufactured with uneven surfaces. Combined, the crankshaft debris and the roughness of the crankpins can keep oil from getting to an engine's connecting rod bearings, which can cause the bearings to wear out prematurely. That, in turn, can cause the bearings to fail, forcing the engine to stall. The good news is that failure of the connecting rod bearings is rarely sudden, and drivers are almost always warned of the issue ahead of time by a very unusual banging noise coming from the engine compartment. (If you've ever had the experience, you know what we mean. It sounds a bit like a Terminator-sized Energizer bunny hopped up on triple espressos trying to break out of a prison cell.) Also good news: while engine failures have been reported by owners, Kia has received no news of accidents or injuries linked to the problem. (Hyundai's documents haven't yet been published.) The recall affects 572,000 Hyundais and 618,160 Kia vehicles registered in the U.S., including: 2013-2014 Hyundai Sonata 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2011-2014 Kia Optima 2012-2014 Kia Sorento 2011-2013 Kia Sportage Hyundai owners should begin receiving recall notices in the mail around May 19. Kia owners can expect them a week or so later, around May 25. After receiving those notices, owners will be able to take their vehicles to their local dealerships, where mechanics will inspect the engine assembly and replace the affected parts, as necessary. The fix will be carried out at no charge to owners. If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to call Hyundai customer service at 855-671-3059 and ask about recall #162, or call Kia customer service at 800-333-4542 and inquire about recall SC147. You can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at -888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign 17V-226 (Hyundai) or 17V-224 (Kia). |
Buick may have accidentally confirmed V-6 power for next Regal GS Posted: 07 Apr 2017 03:00 PM PDT For those hoping for a 2018 Buick Regal with its engine cylinders arranged in a 'V' formation, it seems the brand will oblige with the next hopped-up GS variant. While the recently revealed 2018 Buick Regal Sportback and Regal TourX will arrive with 4-cylinder power only, the brand has apparently slipped up and confirmed the next Regal GS will have a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The Truth About Cars reports the slip up was published two days ago on the official Buick Canada website. |
Elaborate Mosaics Unearthed in 'Lost' Roman City Posted: 07 Apr 2017 06:55 AM PDT Hidden for centuries, mosaic floors from the lost Roman city of Ucetia have been uncovered in France. A large excavation is underway in the town of Uzès in southern France to unearth more of the remains of this ancient Roman settlement, the existence of which archaeologists had only hints of until the dig. The nearby city of Nîmes is more famous for its Roman history, largely thanks to the A.D. 70 amphitheater, where events, including bullfights, still take place. |
U.S. FCC chairman plans fast-track repeal of net neutrality: sources Posted: 06 Apr 2017 07:43 PM PDT By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is moving quickly to replace the Obama administration's landmark net neutrality rules and wants internet service providers to voluntarily agree to maintain an open internet, three sources briefed on the meeting said Thursday. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican appointed by President Donald Trump, met on Tuesday with major telecommunications trade groups to discuss his preliminary plan to reverse the rules, the sources said. The FCC declined to comment but Pai previously said he is committed to ensuring an open internet but feels net neutrality was a mistake. |

Badass bird stuntin' for security camera is definitely up to something Posted: 07 Apr 2017 09:22 AM PDT The worst part about having a home security system is the terror that comes with getting an intruder alert. It looks so aggressive and skeptical. Has anyone actually checked to make sure it didn't proceed to peck the camera until it cracked, allowing its henchmen to enter the house? Why did Trump decide to attack Syria? Just turn on your TV. Posted: 07 Apr 2017 03:45 PM PDT Just days before the New Hampshire primary last year, a must-win contest to keep his unlikely bid for the presidency alive, Donald Trump was doubling down on his opposition to admitting refugees from Syria and other countries known to be breeding grounds for terrorists when a supporter stood up and questioned how committed he really was to that pledge. Speaking at a town hall in Salem, N.H., the man asked if Trump could really look at Syrian children "aged 5, 8, 10, in the face" and say they couldn't come to the U.S. Trump said he could. "I can look in their faces and say, 'You can't come here,'" he announced to cheers, arguing, as he would repeatedly throughout the campaign, that Syrian children could be used by their parents as a "Trojan horse" to get into the country to help perpetrate attacks on the homeland. |

U.S. cautions Americans ahead of Kenya elections set for August Posted: 07 Apr 2017 12:07 AM PDT The U.S. State Department on Thursday cautioned Americans living in or traveling to Kenya about possible rallies or protests that could turn violent, ahead of general elections slated for Aug. 8. "Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence," the State Department said in a travel alert. "As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors." Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga said in February that mass protests were possible if the August elections were rigged. |
