Spiky Ankylosaurus Looks Like Monster from 'Ghostbusters' Posted: 10 May 2017 09:56 AM PDT Due to its uncanny resemblance to Zuul, paleontologists are calling it Zuul crurivastator (CRUR-uh-vass-TATE-or). The genus name is a nod to Zuul, the fictional Gatekeeper of Gozer in "Ghostbusters." The species name translates to "destroyer of shins" in Latin, a name inspired by the club at the end of the dinosaur's tail. Like Zuul in "Ghostbusters," Z. crurivastator has a short, rounded snout, large horns and a gnarled appearance, the researchers said. |

Jihadists snaring starving civilians in Mosul death trap Posted: 11 May 2017 03:50 AM PDT Jihadists preparing for a desperate last stand in Mosul are booby-trapping homes with civilians inside and welding doors shut on starving families to prevent the population from fleeing, residents say. Iraqi forces are closing in fast on the Old City and its narrow streets, where the Islamic State group is expected to focus its significantly depleted military capabilities. The most violent group in modern jihad has repeatedly resorted to human shields to cover its movements but in Mosul the jihadists appear to be taking the tactic to new levels. |

The Dakota Access pipeline has suffered its first leak, outraging indigenous groups who have long warned that the project poses a threat to the environment. The $3.8bn oil pipeline, which sparked international protests last year and is not yet fully operational, spilled 84 gallons of crude oil at a South Dakota pump station, according to government regulators. |

Hezbollah says future war would be on Israeli territory Posted: 11 May 2017 11:54 AM PDT By Ellen Francis and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese Hezbollah said on Thursday that any future conflict between the Shi'ite group and Israel could take place inside Israeli territory, as tensions rise between the arch foes. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, also said in a speech televised live that the group was dismantling all its military positions along Lebanon's eastern border with Syria, and this area would now be patrolled just by the Lebanese army. Hezbollah, an ally of Tehran and Damascus, has been fighting for years in Syria's conflict against an array of rebels and Sunni Islamist fighters. |

This NASA photo of Saturn’s moon shows clouds you’ve never seen on Earth Posted: 10 May 2017 04:23 PM PDT NASA's Cassini spacecraft is currently conducting a series of elaborate dives in which it repeatedly comes closer to Saturn than ever before. But during its slower periods, NASA is still using the craft's fantastic photography equipment to grab images of Saturn's nearby bodies, such as the moon Titan. The latest photo from the agency shows Titan in all its glory, complete with some very volatile cloud cover.
The new images, which were captured by Cassini on May 7th but not released immediately, show Titan in impressive detail, with long, feathery streaks of clouds obscuring portions of the landscape. But unlike the clouds we're used to here on Earth — which are made of extremely tiny water droplets or bits of crystalized ice — the clouds you see in the Titan photos are actually made of methane. In addition to Titan's wealth of atmospheric methane, the planet also has vast lakes thought to be primarily made up of liquid ethane and methane, along with nitrogen. That's an extremely hostile combination, at least in terms of Earth-like life. However, NASA isn't ruling out the possibility that there may actually be methane-based life on the large moon, and even has some theories as to how it might survive. According to NASA, these new photos were snapped at a distance of about 316,000 miles, which means that each pixel of the image equals roughly 2 miles. With that scale in mind, take a look at the dark splotches dotting the top of the image. Those are the huge methane-filled seas, which may or may not be home to huge, methane-filled whales. |

OPEC wants 'collective efforts' to counter US oil output Posted: 11 May 2017 04:28 AM PDT OPEC said Thursday that oil producers needed to make more joint efforts to match supply and demand in the oil market in the face of rising output in the United States. Ahead of a May 25 meeting of the cartel where its members and Russia are expected to roll over an agreement to cut production, OPEC said in its monthly market report that common policies were needed for market stability. While decreased stocks and an improving global economy were supporting oil demand, "continued rebalancing in the oil market by year-end will require the collective efforts of all oil producers to increase market stability," OPEC said. |

California revised budget up slightly, reinstates some cuts Posted: 11 May 2017 01:09 PM PDT California Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday revised his proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, raising total spending by 2.2 percent and increasing funding for schools and transportation, even as he warned that the state's economy likely cannot sustain the growth of recent years. The revised budget for the 2018 fiscal year, which starts July 1, provides a $6 billion loan to the California Public Employees' Retirement System, the nation's largest public pension fund, in an effort to reduce its unfunded liability. The budget also includes increased funding to boost staffing at the state's Justice Department to address policies from the Trump administration that affect public safety, health care, the environment, consumer affairs and constitutional issues. |

He be crazy." Corden then drags Sean Spicer for general incompetence and delivers a round-up of the latest in Republican politics. |
