28 inmates killed in Mexico prison riot Posted: 06 Jul 2017 06:47 PM PDT Rioting inmates at a Mexican prison slit their rivals' throats and beat them to death Thursday, leaving 28 dead in the latest explosion of violence in the country's often lawless jails. Bodies were found strewn around the maximum-security wing, the kitchen, a prison yard and a conjugal visits area after the pre-dawn riot at the Las Cruces federal prison in Acapulco, said the security spokesman for the state of Guerrero. "The incident was triggered by an ongoing feud between rival groups within the prison," the spokesman, Roberto Alvarez, told a press conference. |

Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:56 AM PDT A newly discovered photograph may show that Amelia Earhart survived her mysterious crash, and lived out the rest of her life in Japanese custody. For 80 years, Earhart's fate was unknown, thought to have perished after a suspected plane crash over the Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. The fresh photo was discovered in America's National Archives, an independent agency that is charged with documenting and preserving historical records related to the US. |

Jerk bear crushes camper's tent and gets her arrested on outstanding warrant Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:49 PM PDT A bear crashed a camper's tent which ultimately led to her arrest. A woman camping in Centennial Park in Anchorage, Alaska, was rudely awakened by a bear on Tuesday. Police received a phone call from a concerned citizen at approximately 7:30 a.m., claiming that a bear had crashed a tent, possibly with a person inside, the Associated Press reports. SEE ALSO: Angry bear charging a car is a good reminder to leave bears alone When the cops showed up, the bear was gone, and no one responded when they called out for anyone inside the downed tent. However, when police poked a sleeping bag inside the tent, 58-year-old Christine Chalp popped her head out. Chalp claims that she played dead in order to evade the bear. Unfortunately, a bear nearly eating your face is not a good enough excuse to avoid a ticket — or arrest. Police issued Chalp a citation for feeding game after they discovered food and trash around her campsite, which is illegal because it attracts large game such as moose. Oh, yeah, and bears. While issuing the citation, the police discovered that Chalp had a warrant out for her arrest on a misdemeanor failure-to-appear for disorderly conduct, so she was arrested. So basically, this bear blew up her spot which ultimately led to a citation and an arrest. What a jerk. WATCH: 'Golden Girls' starring 4 best dog friends will be your favorite fluffy remake |

One dead as strong quake hits central Philippine island: official Posted: 06 Jul 2017 03:23 AM PDT A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines Thursday, killing at least one person inside a collapsed building with more people feared trapped inside, a local official said. Rescuers were rushing to the town of Kananga where a three-storey commercial building collapsed as the tremor struck the central island of Leyte, town mayor Rowena Codilla told DZBB radio. "We were able to retrieve one dead and one wounded," Codilla said. |
U.S. bombers challenge China in South China Sea flyover Posted: 07 Jul 2017 03:28 AM PDT TOKYO/BEIJING (Reuters) - Two U.S bombers have flown over the disputed South China Sea, the U.S. Air Force said on Friday, asserting the right to treat the region as international territory despite China's claim to virtually all of the waterway. The flight by the B-1B Lancer bombers from Guam on Thursday came as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare for a meeting on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Germany. The two leaders were expected to discuss what China can do to rein in North Korea's missile and nuclear weapon programs. |

Dozens of police injured in G20 protests as Merkel seeks consensus Posted: 06 Jul 2017 03:38 PM PDT By Joseph Nasr and Andreas Rinke HAMBURG (Reuters) - Dozens of police were injured in clashes with protesters before a G20 summit in Hamburg on Thursday, tarnishing the start of a meeting Chancellor Angela Merkel hopes will cement her role as a stateswoman as she seeks re-election in September. Merkel has taken a high-risk gamble by choosing to hold the summit in the northern port city of Hamburg, partly to show the world that big protests are tolerated in a healthy democracy. |
Tesla Model S fall short in crash test yet again Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:46 PM PDT In another setback for the high-flying electric carmaker, Tesla's Model S once again fell short of the top rating in a key crash test, an independent testing agency said Thursday. On the eve of seeing its first mass-market Model 3 roll off the assembly line, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that despite changes made to the vehicles produced after January, the Model S was again only able to attain an acceptable rating in the small-overlap test conducted in February. As a result, Tesla failed to achieve the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating, which requires a "good" rating in all five of its crash test scenarios. |

New Island Pops Up Off the Coast of North Carolina Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:16 AM PDT A new island suddenly emerged from the sea just off the coast of North Carolina — but officials warn that the spit of land is too dangerous for humans to explore. The new sandbar island seemingly sprang from the ocean in just a few weeks, the Virginian Pilot reported. The island, which is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) long and about 480 feet (146 meters) wide, lies off the coast of Buxton, North Carolina, which is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. |

Russia blocks UN statement calling for N. Korea sanctions Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:53 AM PDT Russia on Thursday blocked a UN Security Council statement calling for "significant measures" in response to North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. The United States had circulated the statement for adoption by the 15-member council after announcing plans for a new sanctions resolution, but Russia raised objections, UN diplomats said. |

Poor little dog had to be rescued from lagoon 2 times by police officers Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:41 PM PDT When a little dog found itself stuck in a lagoon on Wednesday, two brave police officers came to the rescue and pulled the pup out. That, however, was just the beginning of the ordeal. "As soon as the dog's feet hit the ground, without so much as a thank you, it ran off towards the tot lot where several families were playing," the Milwaukee Police Department wrote on Facebook. "Minutes later, there was another splash. The dog jumped back into the water." SEE ALSO: Get the perfect photo of your dog every single time with this gadget This time, the dog was too far out to be reached by a snare or net, so the officers called the fire department for a boat. "While waiting for the boat, they were trying to coax the dog back to shore. After a few minutes the officers could see the animal was starting to struggle in the thick weeds and muck. That's when Officer Spingola said he had to go in." As he was "swimming towards the dog, the dog was struggling to keep afloat. When he reached him, the dog was wrapped up in the weeds, tangled in fishing line and had a hook and bobber hanging from him." As you can see from the video above, the story has a happy ending. Now all they need is for the owner to claim the "happy and healthy" brown poodle mix. WATCH: Teach Your Dog to Text a Selfie |

Blood in the Water: Drone Video Films Whale-Hunting Orcas Posted: 06 Jul 2017 01:15 PM PDT A pod of orcas recently pursued and killed a minke whale off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, and a member of a marine expedition captured the bloody scene on video from above, using a drone. Researchers with the Far East Russia Orca Project (FEROP) spotted the whale-hunting orcas while on a scientific expedition in Avacha Gulf, southeast of Kamchatka. The scientists spied a group of orcas in pursuit of a minke whale — an unusual sight, because orcas that hunt mammals are few in number and are rarely glimpsed in that region, according to the researchers. |
US isolated over climate: G20 host Merkel Posted: 06 Jul 2017 11:00 AM PDT US President Donald Trump faces isolation at Friday's G20 summit over his climate sceptic stance, Chancellor Angela Merkel said, noting that many countries are determined to honour the landmark Paris accord. Trump may have vowed to pull the US out of the 2015 climate protection deal, but "many many other countries want to go on implementing" it, Merkel told journalists. Efforts to halt climate change is a key issue that world leaders gathering from Friday in the German port city of Hamburg are struggling to find consensus on. |
Vietnam renews India oil deal in tense South China Sea Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:49 AM PDT By Mai Nguyen, Nidhi Verma and Sanjeev Miglani HANOI/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Vietnam has extended an Indian oil concession in the South China Sea and begun drilling in another area it disputes with China in moves that could heighten tensions over who owns what in the vital maritime region. The moves come at a delicate time in Beijing's relations with Vietnam, which claims parts of the sea, and India, which recently sent warships to monitor the Malacca Straits, through which most of China's energy supplies and trade passes. Vietnam granted Indian oil firm ONGC Videsh a two-year extension to explore oil block 128 in a letter that arrived earlier this week, the state-run company's managing director Narendra K. Verma told Reuters. |

Trump arrives in Germany for G20 summit Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:27 AM PDT US President Donald Trump arrived Thursday in the German port city of Hamburg to attend what is expected to be the most fractious G20 summit in years. The US leader, accompanied by his wife Melania, was greeted by the mayor of the northern city-state, Olaf Scholz, on arrival at Hamburg airport where Trump and the US First Lady boarded a US military helicopter for the city centre. Trump's "America First" stance and climate scepticism have rattled Western allies who have pledged to uphold free trade principles and implement the 2015 Paris climate accord. |
Congress must shore up insurance markets if Obamacare repeal fails: McConnell Posted: 06 Jul 2017 03:04 PM PDT U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Thursday that Congress must act to shore up private health insurance markets if it fails to repeal Obamacare, comments seen as providing a pathway to a bipartisan deal to fix the health system. Speaking at a luncheon in his home state of Kentucky, McConnell said: "If my side is unable to agree on an adequate replacement, then some kind of action with regard to the private health insurance market must occur," the Associated Press reported. "No action is not an alternative," McConnell was quoted as saying. |

Twitter schools Rick Perry on basic economics after he speaks at a coal plant Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:15 PM PDT If Econ 101 taught us anything, it's that supply follows demand. But U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry interpreted the basic principle a little differently while at a coal plant in West Virginia Thursday. SEE ALSO: Rick Perry denies the reality that CO2 is the main climate change driver, and here we go again According to Market Intelligence energy reporter Taylor Kuykendall, Perry offered up some wisdom at a tour of the Longview Power Plant. You put the supply out there and the demand will follow." — Taylor Kuykendall (@taykuy) July 6, 2017 But that's not how the laws of supply and demand are usually described. It's not all "build it and they will come" in the real world. Twitter noticed and called out the climate change-denying energy secretary. That is literally the opposite of how it works.
