Tuesday's grand jury decision means that a total of 19 people – 15 identified as Turkish security officials – have now been charged over their roles in the violence on 17 May during Mr Erdogan's state visit to the US. Nine people were hospitalised and two members of the Turkish leader's security detail initially arrested in the brutal altercation with Kurds, Yazidis and Armenians protesting Mr Erdogan's human rights record and Syria policy. |

The story behind that inspiring picture of a human chain in Houston Posted: 30 Aug 2017 03:39 AM PDT In times of crisis, human beings get together and help each other the best way they can. That's one of the uplifting takeaways from the "catastrophic" Tropical Storm Harvey that poured 19 trillion gallons of rain on Texas, bringing floods and devastation on the southern state. The storm produced the most rain of any tropical storm or hurricane in the history of the lower 48 states. SEE ALSO: Tropical Storm Harvey is the strongest to hit the US in 12 years Among the acts of kindness — for strangers, for animals, for local correspondents — is this inspiring picture of a human chain to help rescue someone trapped in a car in Houston. The local ABC channel posted the photo on Twitter, where it went viral, with the caption: "#Harvey has taken a lot, but it will NEVER take our humanity. We have seen so many neighbors helping each other. THANK YOU #HopeForHouston". #Harvey has taken a lot, but it will NEVER take our humanity. We have seen so many neighbors helping each other. But there was a catch: they didn't have a rope with them. So they resorted to forming a human chain. "The people had no rope to get him out so they made a chain holding each other," she said. "They pulled the door open and one gentleman got ahold of him as they held on until they got him safe." Mata said she has no idea of what happened to the man after he was brought to safety. "There was a cop nearby where they took him to get checked out as he was so cold," she said. "I really wish I knew what happened to him next." Image: Stephanie mataShe also sent a picture of the SUV after the guy was saved: Image: stephanie mataIt is indeed heartwarming to see all types of people holding hands to help someone in need. People on Twitter noticed it, and responded to the tweet with messages of hope in front of the tragedy: When bad things go down, honestly, you want a bunch of Texans around. #harvey #Texas — Trish (@Trishmil8) August 30, 2017 Houston, you rock. Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on Friday as a Category 4 storm. By Sunday, it had returned to tropical storm status and continues to deliver the record-setting rainfall that has inundated Houston and other cities. At least 30 people have died in relation to the storm and the continuing rainfall poses further risk for those in the region. |

Jewellery company volunteers to save Houston residents stranded by Hurricane Harvey floods Posted: 29 Aug 2017 08:57 AM PDT A Good Samaritans group has joined the emergency services in the Hurricane Harvey rescue effort. Jewellery company Shields of Strength, led by company founder Kenny Vaughan, was asked by the Houston Sheriff's office to help save stranded residents on Monday. We pray for them as we rescue them, and they stop us and pray for us. This nation is a people who love one another: all religions, all colours, all kinds. Jesus built this nation, but hate and selfishness can tear it down. No selfishness in south east Texas the last two days. Please pray for us." Mr Vaughan on Tuesday was trying to return to his home in China, Texas, where he plans to aid other rescue groups and check in on his family. At least 1,000 people have been rescued from the Houston area by local police since the floods, while the coast guard has assisted in rescuing at least 3,000. Sea Shepherd pulls plug on Japan whale hunt Posted: 28 Aug 2017 09:45 PM PDT Activist group Sea Shepherd on Tuesday pulled the plug on its annual campaign to disrupt Japanese whaling, saying it can no longer match the country's military and economic power. The organisation has waged an often violent 12-year high-seas battle against whaling in the Southern Ocean, claiming success for saving thousands of the giant mammals and bringing the slaughter to world attention. "What we discovered is that Japan is now employing military surveillance to watch Sea Shepherd ship movements in real-time by satellite and if they know where our ships are at any given moment, they can easily avoid us," he said in a statement. |

Michigan among U.S. states likely hurt by potential NAFTA changes: Fitch Posted: 30 Aug 2017 02:07 PM PDT Michigan is likely to be the state most hurt by changes to the NAFTA trade agreement, according to a Fitch Ratings report released on Wednesday, as U.S. President Donald Trump renewed threats to scrap the deal. Trump has threatened three times in the past week to abandon the North American Free Trade Agreement, revisiting his view that the United States would probably have to start the process of exiting the accord to reach a fair deal for his country. A second round of talks starts on Friday in Mexico City to renegotiate the 1994 accord binding the United States, Mexico and Canada. |
Teen saves horse trapped by Harvey's rising floodwaters with dad's help Posted: 29 Aug 2017 07:08 PM PDT For days, Chance Ward and his son have been wading through deep water on horseback to save animals trapped by Tropical Storm Harvey's torrential rain. Ward, of Cleveland, Texas, shared pictures and videos of their rescue efforts on Facebook, highlighting just how devastated the region has become. One video that shows his 17-year-old son, Rowdy, letting loose a horse locked inside a pen as water rises above the fidgety animal's legs has gone viral, reaching 8.9 million views since it was posted Monday. SEE ALSO: Houston's local businesses pitch in as Harvey's flooding wreaks havoc "This is what we do, we help livestock. We try to help people," Ward wrote on Facebook. On Tuesday, Ward posted he had saved another four horses and he worked with several others to bring hundreds of cattle to higher ground. Another video shows him helping a man and his swimming dog. Mashable reached out to Ward for further comment. In a touching Facebook post, Ward reflects on helping the animals in need alongside his son. Harvey, which made landfall as a powerful hurricane on Friday and has continued to burden the Gulf Coast of Texas as a tropical storm, has set an all-time continental U.S. rainfall record of 51.88 inches. The rain slowed Tuesday evening in the Houston area, but the flooding emergencies continue. Harvey's wet wrath will hit Louisiana, coastal Mississippi, and Alabama, as well. Ward, his son, and their fellow helpers are not the only citizen saviors. Others have also come out to help people trapped by the devastating flood waters in Texas, including volunteer-led grassroots organizations such as the Cajun Navy, Louisiana Navy, and Texas Navy. "We make livestock our first priority, as I know many are helping people," Ward wrote on Facebook. WATCH: Hurricane Harvey is the strongest hurricane to hit the US in 12 years |

Posted: 30 Aug 2017 05:26 PM PDT SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The language from North Korea on Wednesday is as familiar as it is chilling, a declaration to the world to expect more missile tests. But there are important clues about North Korea's ambitious push to send its missiles farther into the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to make them an accepted part of life in the region, as leader Kim Jong Un expands the weapons program he sees as his country's best chance of survival against encircling enemies. |

U.S. troops risk inflaming clan conflict after deadly Somalia raid Posted: 30 Aug 2017 08:32 AM PDT By Abdi Sheikh MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A raid involving U.S. troops in Somalia has caused a rift between the precarious U.S.-backed government and a powerful clan that says innocent farmers were massacred, months after President Donald Trump approved stepped-up operations there. The U.S. Africa command, Africom, has acknowledged that U.S. forces participated in a ground operation in support of Somali troops in the village of Bariire last week, and says it is investigating reports of civilian deaths. It did not reply to further questions from Reuters about the incident, the second mission in Somalia this year in which it has acknowledged the participation of U.S. ground troops. |

Australian surfer in lucky escape after punching 'massive' shark and riding wave to shore Posted: 29 Aug 2017 04:29 AM PDT A surfer was lucky to escape with a superficial scratch on his back, a torn wetsuit and teeth marks in his board when he was attacked by a shark on Tuesday off an Australian beach. Marcel Brundler, 37, estimated the shark that grabbed his board was a 3-metre (10-foot) Great White shark. He was surfing at Cathedral Rock, near Lorne 140km southwest of the Victoria state capital, Melbourne. Mr Bundler said he punched the shark before making his escape by catching a wave. "But then I realised fairly quick because it was more than half a metre wide, with a massive dorsal fin, and it looked at me," he told ABC News. "Then it kind of dived off, came back and circled me, and took a fair notch out of my board, circled me again, then it got me on my (westsuit), it got me on my hip. Mr Brundler said that he punched the shark then rode a wave away. "I was shouting and punching it while it attacked me," he told the Associated Press. "I was really, really lucky this wave popped up out of nowhere," he added. Lucas Von Graevenitz Sanchez said he watched the attack through his binoculars from the shore. He was very, very lucky," police Senior Constable Mick Atkinson said.
