The missile was launched from Kapustin Yar to the Sary-Shagan test site. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the launch was designed "to test an advanced combat payload" which is designed to "overcome missile defenses." The data gathered from the experiment will be used to develop future Russian ballistic missiles technology to counter missile defenses. |

A single genetic glitch may explain how Zika became so dangerous Posted: 28 Sep 2017 11:44 AM PDT By Julie Steenhuysen CHICAGO (Reuters) - A single genetic change that occurred in 2013 may explain how Zika acquired the ability to attack fetal nerve cells, causing a severe birth defect in babies whose mothers were infected while pregnant, Chinese and U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. Scientists have posited many theories about why Zika, a mosquito-borne virus that had been linked with only mild symptoms since its discovery in 1947, could suddenly be associated with thousands of cases of the birth defect known as microcephaly, as it was in Brazil in 2015. |

Russia, US shoot for the moon with joint lunar station project Posted: 27 Sep 2017 09:05 AM PDT Russia and the United States agreed Wednesday to cooperate on a NASA-led project to build the first lunar space station, part of a long-term project to send humans to Mars. The US space agency said earlier this year that it was exploring a programme called the Deep Space Gateway, a multi-stage project to push further into the solar system. The project envisages building a crew-tended spaceport in lunar orbit that would serve as a "gateway to deep space and the lunar surface," NASA has said. |

Iran may drop nuclear deal if U.S. withdraws, foreign minister tells al Jazeera Posted: 28 Sep 2017 11:25 AM PDT Iran may abandon the nuclear deal it reached with six major powers if the United States decides to withdraw from it, Iranian foreign minister told Qatar's al Jazeera TV in New York. U.S. President Donald Trump has called the 2015 deal an "embarrassment". The deal is supported by the other major powers that negotiated it with Iran and its collapse could trigger a regional arms race and worsen tensions in the Middle East. |

The last thing comet probe Rosetta saw Posted: 28 Sep 2017 10:34 AM PDT Robotic comet explorer Rosetta sent home a last-gasp photo of her target's rocky facade before crashing into its surface to end a 12-year deep-space odyssey, ground controllers said Thursday. Almost a year to the day since Rosetta's demise on September 30 last year, the European Space Agency (ESA) issued the fuzzy image of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, pieced together from the final bursts of data relayed by the orbiter. The image of a one-square-metre (3.3 foot by 3.3 foot) section of comet presumed to be Rosetta's boulder-strewn, dusty resting place, was taken from a distance of about 20 metres. |

China says will protect sovereignty from any conflict on Korean peninsula Posted: 28 Sep 2017 01:30 AM PDT BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Chinese military will make all necessary preparations to protect national sovereignty and regional peace and stability, when asked about the risk of conflict on the Korean peninsula. Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian made the comments at a monthly briefing in Beijing when asked what preparations China was making in case a war breaks out. Wu also reiterated China's view that the issue should be resolved via talks, not military means, which he said were not an option to resolve tensions. ... |

Hunger-striking Turkish teacher in first court appearance Posted: 28 Sep 2017 08:59 AM PDT A jailed former teacher who has been on a six-month hunger strike to protest his dismissal in a crackdown following Turkey's failed coup appeared in court for the first time Thursday, telling the judge he only "wanted his job back". Semih Ozakca and academic Nuriye Gulmen have been on hunger strike since March over their sacking by government decree under the state of emergency imposed after last year's attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ozakca, 27, appeared emaciated but in good spirits as he went before the court in Sincan outside Ankara to applause from his supporters in the public gallery. |

America denies Puerto Rico request for waiver to bring vital fuel and supplies to island Posted: 26 Sep 2017 10:50 PM PDT The Trump administration on Tuesday denied a request to waive shipping restrictions to help get fuel and supplies to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico, saying it would do nothing to address the island's main impediment to shipping, damaged ports. The Jones Act limits shipping between coasts to U.S. flagged vessels. The Department of Homeland Security, which waived the act after hurricanes Harvey and Irma, did not agree an exemption would help this time. |
