Second Hong Kong WW2 bomb in a week sparks evacuation Posted: 31 Jan 2018 07:03 AM PST A second wartime bomb was discovered at a construction site in the heart of Hong Kong within a week, prompting thousands of people to evacuate on Wednesday and stores to shutter. Police sealed off parts of the busy Wan Chai district and ferry services crossing the Victoria Harbour were suspended as experts worked to unearth the explosive, an operation that would likely continue overnight. The bomb was found at the same construction site along the harbour front as a 450-kilogram explosive that was successfully defused on Saturday. |

Broadcasters shut as Kenyan opposition leader takes symbolic oath of office Posted: 30 Jan 2018 04:07 AM PST By George Obulutsa NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyan authorities shut down television and radio stations on Tuesday as supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga watched him take a symbolic presidential oath on the Bible in a Nairobi park in a direct challenge to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Odinga's supporters insist that he, not Kenyatta, is Kenya's legitimate leader, and that Kenyatta's election was neither free nor fair. Kenyatta's election victory in August was annulled by the Supreme Court over irregularities, but he then won a re-run, which Odinga boycotted over a failure to revamp the electoral commission, and was sworn in for a second term in November. |

A monitoring group and Kurdish sources said Turkey's air force had stepped up its raids on the 10th day of operation "Olive Branch", which sees Turkey providing air and ground support to Syrian opposition fighters in an offensive against Kurdish militia in northwestern Syria. Ankara has pushed forward with the operation to force the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) from the region despite international concerns and reports of rising civilian casualties. |

Iranian opposition cleric accuses Khamenei of abuse of power Posted: 30 Jan 2018 05:09 AM PST By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin LONDON (Reuters) - Instead of blaming others Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei should take responsibility for Iran's economic and political shortcomings, an opposition leader under house arrest said in a letter published on Tuesday. In rare public criticism of Khamenei, Mehdi Karroubi accused Iran's hardline top authority of abusing power and urged him to change the way he runs the Islamic Republic before it is too late. "You have been Iran's top leader for three decades, but still speak like an opposition," Karroubi said in an open letter to Khamenei published on Saham News, the official website of his reformist political party. |

US threatens new sanctions as Russia laughs off Putin list Posted: 31 Jan 2018 12:47 AM PST The United States warned Tuesday that it may soon impose new sanctions on Russian figures, after Vladimir Putin laughed off the release of a US target list of his closest and richest allies. The world was braced for a US sanctions onslaught on Monday when a new law came into effect 180 days after President Donald Trump, still hopeful for warmer ties, begrudgingly signed it. The people on the list will not face immediate action -- despite calls for Moscow to be punished for alleged interference in the 2016 US election -- and Putin dismissed the United States' latest "unfriendly act" as a minor inconvenience. |
U.S. defends role of Lebanon army as Israel threatens to attack it Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:20 AM PST By Dan Williams TEL AVIV (Reuters) - The United States pledged continued support for Lebanon's military on Wednesday, calling it a potential counterweight to Iranian-backed Hezbollah, even as Israel said the two forces were indistinguishable and fair game in any future war. The Lebanese Armed Forces took no part in the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel. It has received more than $1.5 billion in U.S. military assistance since then and, in the last seven years, training and support from U.S. special forces too. |

Trump '100 percent' for releasing explosive memo Posted: 30 Jan 2018 04:11 PM PST President Donald Trump has told a lawmaker he plans to release a secret Republican memo alleging that a politically motivated Department of Justice and the FBI flagrantly abused regulations to spy on his campaign. The issue of the memo has gripped Washington just as the Russia meddling probe edges closer to the White House. Republicans are keen to see the four-page memo -- written by Republican lawmaker Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a close defender of Trump -- released, and his committee voted to do so. |
