Posted: 23 Feb 2018 10:14 AM PST Few of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students had even been born the day two gunmen shot and killed Coni Sanders' father in a massacre at Columbine High School in 1999 – the largest school shooting in America at the time. "This has been 18 years of, every time there is a mass shooting all of the adults start screaming at each other and telling each other why they're wrong," said Ms Sanders, who has worked as a forensic therapist for violent offenders since her father, Columbine High School teacher Dave Sanders, was murdered. Indeed, since the day of the shooting, many students of Stoneman Douglas have spoken up unequivocally about the need for more gun control. |

New charges filed against parents in California abused siblings case Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:15 PM PST A California couple accused of keeping 13 children imprisoned, chained and starved in a squalid suburban home were hit with additional charges on Friday as defense lawyers said they were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of evidence in the case. David Turpin, 57, and his wife Louise, 49, were advised of the new charges during a brief hearing in Riverside County Superior Court at which they appeared dressed in black at a table with their attorneys but did not speak. A spokesman for the Riverside County District Attorney's Office said the new charges included three counts of child abuse against both defendants. |

And nothing that has happened since the election has changed his mind. Jon Ward explores what led him to this position and how he deals with the suspicions that he is "a fundamentalist in an intellectual's clothing." |

"The wild elephant trampled a Rohingya child to death... and then trampled another Bangladeshi man to death when it was chased by Rohingya refugees and local villagers," Ali Kabir, the district forest department chief, told AFP. |
Grand Canyon crash that killed Britons happened on tribal land with fewer aviation regulations Posted: 23 Feb 2018 01:29 AM PST Investigators are continuing to probe what caused a helicopter to plunge into the Grand Canyon as it emerged that the crash happened on tribal land where air tours are not as highly regulated as those inside the national park itself. Three British tourists died when the helicopter went down early February. They were in Las Vegas to celebrate a birthday and took a helicopter sightseeing tour on the Hualapai reservation. Becky Dobson, 27, her boyfriend Stuart Hill, 30, and his brother, Jason Hill, 32-year-old lawyer died. Three friends and the pilot are in hospital where investigators want to interview them about what went wrong. Unlike the national park, air tours on the Hualapai reservation are not subject to federal regulations that restrict routes, impose curfews and cap the amount of flights over the Grand Canyon each year. The Federal Aviation Administration granted the Hualapai Tribe an exemption 18 years ago after finding that the regulations would harm the tribe's economy where tourism is a major driver. Most of the flights over the reservation originate from Las Vegas, and air tour operators aggressively market them. The pilots can fly between canyon walls and land at the bottom next to the Colorado River on the reservation, which isn't allowed at the park other than for emergency operations. Quartermaster Canyon locator The National Transportation Safety board says it can't say with any certainty yet what caused Saturday's crash. Gary Robb, an attorney who has represented crash victims for almost 40 years, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal it may take investigators as long as nine months to establish the cause of Saturday's crash. "It's too early to speculate, but early indications suggest that perhaps heavy gusts could have been a factor that drove the aircraft to strike a wall of the canyon," he said. "The other possibility is some sort of in-flight mechanical issue, including an engine problem or main rotor blade fracture or defect. Stuart Hill and Becky Dobson died when a helicopter crashed in the Grand Canyon on Saturday Credit: facebook "You also cannot rule out human error, whether it be some sort of pilot incapacitation or neglect." Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters said it is co-operating with the investigation and that it abides by flight safety rules and regulations that exceed those required by the Federal Aviation Administration. Saturday's crash was its fourth fatal accident in the past 20 years, claiming eight lives. |

Armed deputy at Florida school resigns after failing to engage shooter Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:06 PM PST The armed deputy assigned to the campus of a Florida high school during a deadly shooting last week stayed outside the building during the attack and failed to engage the shooter, the county sheriff said on Thursday. As a consequence, Scott Peterson, on duty as the school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, resigned from the department, said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who earlier has suspended the officer from the force. Israel said he decided to suspend Peterson after viewing a video that showed the deputy's actions during the rampage that killed 17 people. |

But if he wins a Utah Senate seat, he could become something he's never managed to be: the most influential figure in the GOP outside of the White House. |

US blasts Russia over strikes on Syria rebel enclave Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:25 PM PST The United States blasted Russia on Thursday over the bombing of Syria's Eastern Ghouta, saying it has a "unique responsibility" for the more than 400 deaths in the Damascus suburb. After fresh air and rocket strikes by Syrian government forces killed another 46, State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert blamed Russia for not reeling in the regime of its ally President Bashar al-Assad. "Without Russia backing Syria, the devastation and the deaths would certainly not be occurring," Nauert told journalists. |

Mounting calls for a humanitarian truce in one of the bloodiest episodes of Syria's seven-year conflict failed to stop 46 more people being killed by air strikes and rocket fire. Regime backer Russia said there was "no agreement" at the UN Security Council on a 30-day ceasefire for Syria and presented amendments to a draft resolution that would allow aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians from besieged Eastern Ghouta. |
