Uber avoids legal battle with family of autonomous vehicle victim Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:51 AM PDT The family of a woman killed by an Uber Technologies Inc self-driving vehicle in Arizona has reached a settlement with the ride services company, ending a potential legal battle over the first fatality caused by an autonomous vehicle. Cristina Perez Hesano, an attorney with the firm of Bellah Perez in Glendale, Arizona, said "the matter has been resolved" between Uber and the daughter and husband of Elaine Herzberg, 49, who died after being hit by an Uber self-driving SUV while walking across a street in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe earlier this month. The law firm representing Herzberg's daughter and husband, whose names were not disclosed, said they would have no further comment on the matter as they considered it resolved. |

‘Time to join the NRA.’ Calls to repeal the Second Amendment set off commenters Posted: 28 Mar 2018 02:43 PM PDT "Everyone has an opinion, thankfully we have the constitution." "I can think of fewer things that would create a state of open rebellion in the United States." Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens's call for a repeal of the Second Amendment has Newsroom readers up in arms. In a New York Times op-ed piece, Stevens said March for Our Lives protesters asking for gun law reform should ask for more: "They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment." The vast majority of the thousands of Newsroom comments on the Yahoo News report show strong opposition: "I have never owned a gun in my life, but fully understand the importance of the Second Amendment." President Trump, meanwhile, completely dismissed Stevens's call to repeal, tweeting, "The Second Amendment will never be repealed!" The Second Amendment says: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Stevens called for the repeal in order to weaken the National Rifle Association. The NRA answered back with its own statement: "We will unapologetically continue to fight to protect this fundamental freedom." What do you think? Join the conversation in Newsroom. |
Saudi Arabia must face U.S. lawsuits over Sept. 11 attacks Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:11 PM PDT By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Wednesday rejected Saudi Arabia's bid to dismiss lawsuits claiming that it helped plan the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and should pay billions of dollars in damages to victims. U.S. District Judge George Daniels in Manhattan said the plaintiffs' allegations "narrowly articulate a reasonable basis" for him to assert jurisdiction over Saudi Arabia under the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), a 2016 federal law. |

Amal Clooney to represent Reuters reporters detained in Burma Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:43 AM PDT Prominent human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has joined the legal team representing two Reuters reporters jailed in Burma, who are accused of possessing secret government papers, her office said on Thursday. A court in Yangon has been holding preliminary hearings since January to decide whether Wa Lone, 31, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, will be charged under the colonial-era Officials Secrets Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. The journalists had been working on a Reuters investigation into the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslim men in western Burma's Rakhine state during an army crackdown that began in August, which has sent nearly 700,000 people fleeing to Bangladesh. Lawyers for the two reporters on Wednesday asked the court to throw out the case, saying there was insufficient evidence to support charges against the pair in Burma, also known as Myanmar. "Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are being prosecuted simply because they reported the news. I have reviewed the case file and it is clear beyond doubt that the two journalists are innocent and should be released immediately," Amal Clooney was quoted as saying in a statement released by her office. "The outcome of this case will tell us a lot about Myanmar's commitment to the rule of law and freedom of speech," said Clooney, who is married to actor George Clooney. Zaw Htay, spokesman for Myanmar's civilian government, declined to comment. Wa Lone, one of the imprisoned journalists, pictured before a court hearing in Yangon, Myanmar in March Credit: Reuters Government officials have previously denied the arrests represent an attack on press freedom, which rights advocates say is under growing threat in the Southeast Asian country. Myanmar's ambassador to the United Nations, Hau Do Suan, said last month that the Reuters journalists were not arrested for reporting a story, but were accused of "illegally possessing confidential government documents". Gail Gove, chief counsel of Reuters, said retaining Clooney would strengthen the company's international legal expertise and broaden efforts to secure the release of the reporters. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have been in custody since their arrest on Dec. 12. The pair have told relatives they were arrested almost immediately after being handed some rolled up papers at a restaurant in northern Yangon by two policemen they had not met before, having been invited to meet the officers for dinner. The district court in northern Yangon will hear arguments from prosecutors and defence lawyers on the motion to dismiss the case on April 4. N. Korea's Kim shows unity with China's Xi in first foreign trip Posted: 28 Mar 2018 01:05 PM PDT North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was given a lavish welcome by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a secretive trip to Beijing as both sides try to repair frayed relations before Pyongyang's landmark summits with Seoul and Washington. US President Donald Trump welcomed the Beijing meeting and said there was now a "good chance" Kim would scrap his nuclear weapons -- but warned that sanctions must stay in force in the meantime. On his first trip abroad since taking power, Kim and his wife were greeted by an honour guard and a banquet hosted by Xi, according to state media, which confirmed the "unofficial" visit on Wednesday only after Kim had returned by train to North Korea. |

Police say eight family members were in car that went off California cliff Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:58 PM PDT A sports utility vehicle that hurtled off a roadside cliff along the Northern California coastline earlier this week was likely carrying all eight members of a Washington state family, police said on Wednesday. The bodies of a married couple, Jennifer Jean Hart, 38, and Sarah Margaret Hart, 38, were recovered from inside the wreckage of a GMC Yukon after it was spotted by another driver on Monday afternoon at the bottom of a seaside embankment in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco. |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:26 PM PDT Reverend Al Sharpton has declared that "Stephon Clark has woken up the nation" as hundreds of mourners gathered to honour and chant the name of the 22-year-old, who was shot by police officers in his grandparents' backyard. Sacramento police officers responding to reports of vehicle break-ins opened fire when they encountered Mr Clark, discharging their weapons 20 times as one officer shouted "Gun"! Searching the scene in the aftermath, they found only a mobile phone. The shooting has ignited waves of protests in Sacramento and fanned a national outcry about another black man being killed by police officers. |

Qantas chief floats 'cargo class' concept for Australia-to-Britain flights Posted: 27 Mar 2018 08:40 PM PDT Alan Joyce, the Chief Executive Office of Qantas Airways, has suggested creating a new class of cabin for its ultra long-haul services - one that could include making use of the cargo hold. Fresh from launching the first direct passenger service to Europe, linking Perth with London's Heathrow, Mr Joyce reportedly expanded on his vision for "Project Sunrise" - the airline's goal to fly non-stop from Sydney and Melbourne to the UK and also directly to New York within four years. Part of his grand plan includes exploring the use of the cargo hold to create train-like berths and a space for passengers to exercise, Fairfax Media reported. "One of the concepts that we have is maybe if we're not carrying freight you do something lower where cargo is on the aircraft, do you have an area where people can walk? Do you have berths like on a train?" Mr Joyce reportedly told the Australia-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce in London on Tuesday. "There's a lot of 'out there' thinking that's going on," he told the audience, according to a recording of Mr Joyce's comments that was leaked to Fairfax Media. What was the first flight from Britain to Australia like? "I don't know if in 2022 if there's another going to be another class but if there is Qantas is likely to be the airline that creates it." At a separate event in London, Mr Joyce said "nothing is off the table". "Could some of the freight areas that we may not use, be used as an exercise area?" he asked. The CEO has described the "Project Sunrise" routes as the "last frontier" of aviation, after which all of the world's major cities will have non-stop air links. Top 10 | The world's longest commercial flights Qantas's first Perth-London service landed in the U.K. Sunday after a 9,000-mile trip. Though not quite the world's longest flight - the record is currently held by a Doha-Auckland service operated by Qatar Airways - the route signals the beginning of the end of the so-called Kangaroo Route, which has seen planes make the journey from Europe to Australia in a series of hops since the advent of aviation. Mr Joyce said he's confident that Boeing and Airbus SE will be able to eke out sufficient extra range from future models to allow Qantas to fly from Sydney and Melbourne direct to London and New York as soon as 2022. |
‘She has got my attention’: Tomi Lahren gun photo stirs up commenters Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:25 PM PDT "Nothing better than a strong woman who carries." "Yeah, that looks comfortable for working out. SMH." Tomi Lahren shared a photo of herself packing heat in her yoga pants, and the controversial shot has stirred up thousands of comments on Newsroom. In the Instagram image, conservative pundit and TV personality Tomi Lahren has a steely glare and a gun tucked into her yoga pants. She was promoting the brand Alexo Athletica, which specializes in "active carry-wear." These leggings are designed with a front pocket that gives women the option to carry a firearm while they exercise. Along with the shot, Lahren included the caption: "Ladies, chances are your assailant is gonna be bigger, stronger, and faster, and that's why you have @alexoathletica for your gun, your mace, or even your phone." While a flurry of Twitter posts are mocking the pose, she has largely won admirers on Newsroom: "As a yoga pant wearing woman, love it!" "Thank you Tomi for standing up for traditional values and the U.S. Constitution." See the video above for more reactions. What do you think? Is this a good place for a gun? Biggest convoy yet evacuates Syria's ruined Ghouta Posted: 27 Mar 2018 09:01 PM PDT The largest convoy yet of Eastern Ghouta evacuees arrived in northwestern Syria Tuesday as the regime threatened to resume its blitz if the last remaining rebels do not leave. Government troops, backed by Russia and loyalist militia, launched a ferocious assault more than a month ago to retake the enclave on the outskirts of Damascus. Russia and the Syrian regime it supports reportedly threatened to resume their blistering bombardment if the last holdout pocket that includes the main Ghouta town of Douma does not agree to a similar deal. |
