Florida school shooter wants to donate inheritance to survivors Posted: 11 Apr 2018 05:33 PM PDT Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz wants to donate his inheritance -- which could run to hundreds of thousands of dollars or more -- to the bereaved families and survivors of his attack, his lawyers said Wednesday. Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the south Florida city of Parkland on February 14 and opened fire at students and staff with an AR-15-style semi-automatic weapon. At a court hearing on Wednesday, Broward County Judge Elizabeth Scherer sought to determine whether Cruz -- who has so far been represented by public defenders -- is able to pay for his own defense. |

Climate change runs AMOC with Atlantic currents: studies Posted: 11 Apr 2018 10:00 AM PDT A system of Atlantic Ocean currents that regulates global weather is at its feeblest in 1,600 years, weakened partly by climate change, said researchers Wednesday, warning of trouble ahead. Two studies in the journal Nature concluded the system, dubbed the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is in decline -- validating a long-held scientific suspicion. The weakening, agreed the teams, was the result of melting sea ice, glaciers, and ice-shelves gushing freshwater -- less dense than salty ocean water -- into the North Atlantic. |
Sweden charges Chinese with spying on Tibetan refugees Posted: 10 Apr 2018 05:44 PM PDT Swedish prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 49-year-old Chinese man with espionage for allegedly gathering intelligence on Tibetan refugees in Sweden and Norway for China. The man, identified in the charge sheet as Dorjee Gyantsan, is accused of infiltrating the Tibetan community to pass information on their personal and political activities to Chinese officials in exchange for money. Dorjee acquired resident status as a refugee in Sweden in the early 2000s, and posed as a supporter of Tibetan independence, prosecutors said. |

"I have made grave mistakes in the assessment and my perception of the situation, due in particular to a lack of truthful and balanced information," he wrote in an extraordinary letter to Chilean bishops. The letter followed a visit to Chile by one of the Vatican's most experienced sexual abuse investigators, Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta. |
American Warplanes Are Falling From the Sky Posted: 12 Apr 2018 04:23 AM PDT Two of the crashes involved U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, underscoring concerns that the naval aviation fleet is overworked, undertrained and poorly-maintained. On March 15, an Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopter struck the ground in western Iraq, killing all seven airmen aboard. |

Israel targets Hamas posts in Gaza after border blast Posted: 11 Apr 2018 03:06 AM PDT The Israeli army said it fired at unspecified Hamas "military targets" in Gaza on Wednesday after a Palestinian bomb attack on an army engineering unit working inside the Hamas-ruled territory. It was not clear what the engineering unit was working on, though Israel routinely carries out maintenance work on or near the border fence in an area it considers a buffer zone. "During routine activity in northern Gaza, an explosive device that was placed under the guise of the riots was detonated against an (army) engineering vehicle on the western side of the security fence," a military statement said. |
