Boeing reports jump in 1Q profits, lifts 2018 forecast Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:39 AM PDT Boeing reported a surge in first-quarter profits on Wednesday and lifted its full-year earnings forecast following a strong performance in commercial aviation and defense programs. The results again reflect broad health in commercial aviation as the airline industry enjoys a more stable financial period and as flying becomes much more common in the Middle East, Asia and other developing regions. A big player in China, Boeing has often been seen as vulnerable to a trade war between the United States and China, a possibility that topped Wall Street's list of worries earlier this month but has receded of late amid softer rhetoric between Washington and Beijing. |

'Maximum' security as Philippines readies Boracay shutdown Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:52 AM PDT Police with assault rifles patrolled entry points to Boracay island on Tuesday just days before a six-month shutdown and clean-up of one of the Philippines' top tourist attractions. President Rodrigo Duterte had branded the renowned white-sand resort a "cesspool" fouled by dumped sewage and imposed the temporary ban on visitors that is due to take effect Thursday. In Boracay, police conducted exercises simulating clashes with protesters, terrorist attacks and a hostage incident even as they said there was no specific threat. |

U.S. Supreme Court divided over Texas electoral district fight Posted: 24 Apr 2018 06:24 PM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday appeared divided along ideological lines as it heard a bid by Texas to revive Republican-drawn electoral districts thrown out by a lower court for diluting the clout of black and Hispanic voters. Some of the conservative justices seemed willing during arguments in the case to accept that the Republican-led Texas legislature acted in good faith when it adopted new electoral maps in 2013 for state legislative and U.S. congressional seats. Liberal justices seemed skeptical that those maps resolved racial discrimination concerns that caused earlier maps to be invalidated, and questioned whether it was premature to hear the case because a lower court had not yet issued a final ruling on the dispute. |
Posted: 24 Apr 2018 02:51 AM PDT The first picture has emerged of Toronto van crash suspect Alek Minassian, who is thought to have killed 10 people in the Canadian city on Monday. Minassian was a student at Seneca College in Toronto's North York area, CBC reported, citing a LinkedIn profile that appeared to have been taken down following the crash. Officers suspect Minassian was the driver of a rented white van that ploughed into pedestrians at about 1.30pm local time on Monday, killing 10 people and injuring 15 more. |

US showing China 'yellow card' on trade, says Hong Kong consul Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:45 AM PDT The United States has issued China with a "yellow card" on trade, said its consul general in Hong Kong Tuesday, in a strongly worded speech which also urged the importance of the city's autonomy for business. US President Donald Trump last month approved plans for steep tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of Chinese imports, while Beijing has slapped duties on key US agricultural exports and threatened to do likewise for the sensitive American soybean industry. Consul General Kurt Tong said China had breached its commitments to the World Trade Organisation to such an extent that it was detrimental to the US, which was now "justified in claiming damages". |

UK Jewish groups say disappointed by talks with Labour leader Corbyn on anti-Semitism Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:25 PM PDT By Andrew MacAskill LONDON (Reuters) - Jewish community leaders in Britain said their talks on Tuesday with opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on how to end anti-Semitism in his party had been a "disappointing missed opportunity". Corbyn met with the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council after they organized a protest last month accusing him of failing to tackle anti-Semitism in his party because of a far-left world view hostile to Jews. Before the meeting, Corbyn acknowledged that anti-Semitism had surfaced within his party and apologized for the pain this had caused. |

Syria crisis: Western countries plan to bypass Russia's UN veto over Douma chemical attack Posted: 24 Apr 2018 07:09 AM PDT Western countries are reportedly planning to bypass Russia's veto at the UN security council over Syria by referring concerns about the suspected use of chemical weapons to the UN general assembly. Russia has used its veto 12 times to block UN action targeting the regime of its ally, Bashar al-Assad. In November, it used its veto to block the extension of a UN mechanism to attribute responsibility for chemical weapons attacks. |
Trump Republicans rebuff Democrats, keep Arizona seat Posted: 24 Apr 2018 10:23 PM PDT Donald Trump's Republicans won a closely watched congressional election Tuesday in Arizona, but by a single-digit margin in a district the president won easily in 2016, as Democrats made a strong showing ahead of mid-term elections. Former state lawmaker Debbie Lesko, a Trump supporter, kept the House seat safely in Republican hands in a conservative leaning district that saw a spirited challenge from Democratic political novice Hiral Tipirneni, a cancer researcher and former emergency room physician. |

Eurofighter doubts U.S. will use nuclear certification to tilt German jets bid Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:48 PM PDT By Andrea Shalal BERLIN (Reuters) - The head of Eurofighter on Wednesday said he did not expect the United States to slow certification of the European fighter's ability to carry nuclear weapons as a way to influence a competition to replace Germany's aging 90 Tornado jets. The Eurofighter is a joint project between British defense group BAE, European airplane maker Airbus and Italy's Leonardo. Airbus and Eurofighter on Tuesday submitted six binders of information to the German defense ministry, which has said it will prioritize a European fighter, but has also asked for information about the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet and Boeing Co's F-15E and F/A-18E/F jets. |

U.S. Admiral: China Is Now Capable of Controlling the South China Sea Posted: 24 Apr 2018 07:16 AM PDT Pick to take over as Pacific Command chief calls for maintaining U.S. presence. In response to questions for how to respond to China's increased military presence in the region, Admiral Davidson advocated a sustained US military presence and investing in weapons technology. If Chinese leaders thought that saying goodbye to their least favorite US military commander, current US Pacific Command chief Admiral Harry Harris, would mean a more amenable replacement is on the way, they had better guess again. |

Malaysia finds motorbike allegedly used in Palestinian killing Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:18 AM PDT Malaysian police have found the motorbike allegedly used in the drive-by shooting of a Palestinian scientist in Kuala Lumpur, the national police chief said Tuesday. Fadi Mohammad al-Batsh, 35, was killed in a hail of bullets by two attackers Saturday as he walked to a mosque for dawn prayers. The family of Batsh, a member of Islamist militant group Hamas who was said to be a rocket-making expert, has accused Israel's Mossad spy agency of carrying out the killing. |
