Cases against bikers struggle 3 years after Waco shootout Posted: 17 May 2018 04:31 PM PDT WACO, Texas (AP) — Texas prosecutors who have failed to convict a single person in the three years since a Waco shooting left nine bikers dead are trying a new tack of targeting fewer cases, but attorneys for the bikers say the evidence is so shaky and the lead prosecutor's credibility so damaged that it will be difficult to make the remaining charges stick. |
Posted: 17 May 2018 09:19 AM PDT Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., is calling on the EPA to follow through on its plan to prohibit a toxic pesticide that's been linked to brain damage in children. One of EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's first actions in office was to reject his scientists' conclusion that it put children and farmworkers at risk and strike down a ban his agency had proposed two years earlier. |

Malaysia's Anwar says Najib likely headed to jail Posted: 17 May 2018 04:40 AM PDT Newly released Malaysian political heavyweight Anwar Ibrahim said Thursday he expects ex-premier Najib Razak to be jailed over multi-billion-dollar graft claims. In an interview with AFP a day after he walked free from custody -- where he had languished since 2015 on what supporters say were trumped-up charges levelled at Najib's behest -- Anwar also said he would be back in parliament very soon. Anwar's release on Wednesday capped an astonishing week in Malaysian politics that saw Najib's long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition booted from power in a revolution at the ballot box. |

Farm bill fails in U.S. House as immigration spat roils Republican Party Posted: 18 May 2018 11:08 AM PDT By Amanda Becker and Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives rejected a sweeping $867 billion farm bill on Friday after Republican leaders failed to appease conservative lawmakers who had asked them not to hold the vote until they were given the chance to consider a bill to clamp down on immigration. The next steps are unclear for the farm bill, which failed in a 198-to-213 vote. The farm bill's passage through the House has been entangled in the debate over immigration, as the conservative House Freedom Caucus sought to pre-empt a move by moderate Republicans and Democrats to use procedural tactics to force a wide-ranging immigration debate on the House floor. |

"Total has said that if it doesn't get an exemption from the United States to continue its work, it will begin to pull out of the deal," Bijan Namdar Zanganeh was quoted as saying by his ministry's Shana news service. Total started the $4.8-billion South Pars 11 project in July 2017, two years after Western powers signed a nuclear deal with Tehran prompting the return of many businesses to Iran. |

Maersk Tankers would honour customer agreements entered into before May 8, but then wind them down by November 4, "as required by the reimposed US sanctions," the company told AFP. The group said it "has been transporting cargoes for customers in and out of Iran on a limited basis," without providing precise figures for its activities. |
