The father, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, had told his wife he wanted to perform an exorcism on the child, authorities said. "We discovered the remains yesterday on Abdul's fourth birthday," Hogrefe said, appearing to fight back tears. |

Israel kills two Hamas gunmen in Gaza, sides dispute circumstances Posted: 07 Aug 2018 07:36 AM PDT Israeli tank fire killed two Hamas gunmen in Gaza on Tuesday in a strike the Israeli military described as return fire for a shooting attack against its forces, an account disputed by the Palestinian Islamist group. It deemed Israel's shelling of them a "criminal act". In an earlier statement, the Israeli military said gunmen had fired on its soldiers from a Hamas post, which was shelled by a tank in response. |

New Mexico child abuse suspects accused of training children for shootings Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:53 PM PDT Five adults charged with abusing 11 children at a New Mexico compound, where they were found ragged and starving, were training those children to use firearms to commit school shootings, prosecutors said in court documents on Wednesday. The principal suspect, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, also was charged with abducting his 3-year-old son from his home in Atlanta last December, prompting a cross-country manhunt that led authorities to the compound they raided last Friday north of Taos, New Mexico. The 11 children found alive, ranging in age from 1 to 15 years old, were placed in protective custody. |
Israel minister welcomes Syria scientist killing Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:18 AM PDT Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz on Tuesday welcomed the killing of a leading Syrian weapons scientist but declined to comment on reports his government was behind the fatal bombing. General Aziz Asbar, head of a Syrian government weapons research centre, was killed along with his driver when the bomb hit his car on Saturday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Asbar headed the Maysaf research centre in Hama, which was hit by Israeli air strikes last month and in September last year, the Observatory said. |

Iran weighs response as US sanctions bite Posted: 07 Aug 2018 01:13 PM PDT As Iranians awoke Tuesday to renewed U.S. sanctions that had been lifted by Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers, the question on everyone's mind remained: What happens now? From deciphering President Donald Trump's tweets on Iran — including one demanding "WORLD PEACE" — to trying to figure out how much their cratering currency is worth, Iranians appear divided on how to respond. President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate whose administration struck the 2015 deal, has taken an increasingly confrontational line in recent weeks, applauded by hard-liners who had long opposed him. |

IS abducted more than 30 Druze civilians -- women and their children -- from a remote village less than two weeks ago, during a brutal onslaught in the southern province. "A member of IS was detained during an attack against a pro-regime position in the Sweida countryside," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. |

'Stateless' Thai cave boys and coach granted citizenship Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:18 AM PDT Three boys from a soccer team who were rescued from a flooded cave in northern Thailand last month were granted Thai citizenship on Wednesday, authorities said. Ekapol and 12 boys had gone to explore the Tham Luang caves in Chiang Rai province on June 23, when a rainy-season downpour flooded the cave system and trapped them underground. Three of the boys and Ekapol were considered stateless, even though they were born in Thailand, until local authorities checked their qualifications, including birth certificates, and approved their requests for Thai citizenship. |

The latest report from firefighters is that 34 per cent of the fire has been contained, after it damaged 75 residences and nearly 2,000 other structures. The state experienced a similarly large wildfire last year in the southern part of the state in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, but the Mendocino Fire has eclipsed the Thomas Fire in size. |
