Two US citizens stabbed in possible terror attack at Amsterdam station Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:35 AM PDT Two bystanders who were seriously injured in a knife attack at Amsterdam's Central Station are US citizens, the US ambassador said Saturday. "We are aware that both victims were US citizens and have been in touch with them and their families," Pete Hoekstra said in a statement. Police shot and wounded a 19-year-old Afghan man with a German residency permit. He stabbed the two people at the Dutch capital's busy station in the city centre on Friday. "We are seriously taking into account that there was a terrorist motive," Amsterdam police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek told AFP. Earlier witnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out and thousands of commuters and tourists were evacuated from the rail terminus shortly after midday on Friday. "A man in the west side tunnel of Amsterdam Central Station stabbed two other people and directly after that he was shot by the police," another police spokesman Rob van der Veen said, adding terrorism was not being ruled out by investigators. Security official stands guard outside Amsterdam's main railway station. Credit: Remko De Waal/AFP "The two people are very badly injured, and they were brought to the hospital," he said. "We are looking at all scenarios, also the worst scenario, which is terrorism." One witness said he saw a young man "stumble" into his flower shop at the station with a bleeding wound to his hand. "Shortly afterwards I heard some shots and I know something has gone badly wrong," Richard Snelders told the ANP news agency. A while later he saw another man lying on the ground nearby, he said. "The first thing that comes up in your mind is that it's a terror attack. After all, you are at Amsterdam Central Station. There was a lot of panic," Snelders said. Police quickly arrived at the scene with video images showing police ordering the suspect in English to "stay down" after he had been shot. Images posted on social media showed security guards ushering passengers towards exits and paramedics arriving at the scene with stretchers. Police spokesman Zuiderhoek said the knifeman's condition was not life-threatening, but that he had been shot in the lower body. "At this moment he is under police custody in hospital. He is being questioned about his motive," Zuiderhoek added. Profile | Geert Wilders Dutch police were also in close contact with their German counterparts in regards to the suspect's background, he added. Two platforms at the station - located in the Dutch capital's historic canal-ringed city centre - had been evacuated and closed off to passengers, police said, and were reopened for rail traffic two hours later. A special police department opened a routine probe into why police shot the man. The Netherlands has so far been spared from the slew of terror attacks which have rocked its closest European neighbours in the past few years. But amid a number of scares and reports that people linked to some of those attacks may have crossed briefly into the country, top Dutch security and intelligence officials have stressed that the threat level is substantial. Police declined to speculate on the reasons for Friday's incident, but the Afghan Taliban in a statement Thursday called for attacks on Dutch troops following plans by Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders to stage a Prophet Mohammed cartoon competition in the Dutch parliament. Wilders, who received several death threats has since cancelled the competition which has angered Muslims and sparked protests, saying he wanted to "avoid the risk of making people victims of Islamist violence". Around 250,000 people travel through Central Station every day, according to statistics provided by the Amsterdam.info travel guide. |

China says not putting pressure on Taiwan's last Africa ally Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:15 PM PDT China has become increasingly vocal about its desire to win away the country, formerly known as Swaziland, from Taiwan, even as the eSwatini government has denounced Beijing for playing "mind games" and says it has no desire to ditch Taipei. Speaking at a news briefing, China's special envoy for Africa, Xu Jinghu, said the issue of eSwatini and its lack of ties to Beijing was "an important question", but it was up to them to take the initiative. |

US ends funding for UN Palestinian refugee agency Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:29 PM PDT The United States announced it was halting funding for the United Nations' agency for Palestinian refugees Friday after declaring the organization was "irredeemably flawed. Washington has long been the UN Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) largest donor but is "no longer willing to shoulder the very disproportionate share of the burden," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement. Nauert said there would be no additional contributions beyond a $60 million dollar payment made in January, drawing condemnation from both the Palestinians and UNRWA. |
Right-wing demonstrations and counterprotests follow stabbing in Chemnitz, Germany Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:54 AM PDT Eighteen people were injured in rival demonstrations capping off a week marked by xenophobic protests in the eastern city of Chemnitz, prompting Germany's foreign minister to urge Germans to "get off our sofas" and speak up against racism. Chemnitz has been in the spotlight after violent far-right protests erupted over the fatal stabbing of a 35-year-old man, allegedly by a Syrian and an Iraqi last Sunday. On Saturday, 8,000 people answered a joint call by far-right party AfD and Islamophobic PEGIDA street movement to descend once again on the streets of the former communist city which was in the erstwhile East Germany. |

California lawmakers pass bill on PG&E wildfire liability Posted: 01 Sep 2018 01:00 AM PDT California's legislature passed a bill late on Friday that could help the utility Pacific Gas and Electric Corporation (PG&E) avoid potentially crippling liabilities for wildfires that ravaged northern parts of the San Francisco Bay Area last year. The bill, passed 29 to 4 in the Senate and 45 to 10 in the Assembly, requires approval by Democrat Governor Jerry Brown. Some fires in the north of the Bay area were caused by trees toppling into or making contact with PG&E power lines, a report released by state officials in June said. |

Aretha Franklin funeral bishop apologises to Ariana Grande for 'over friendly' hug Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:19 PM PDT The bishop who officiated at Aretha Franklin's funeral has apologised to Ariana Grande for how he touched her onstage and a joke he made about her name. Bishop Charles Ellis III led Franklin's funeral and awkwardly greeted Grande on stage after she performed (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Images of the moment showed Mr Ellis' hand holding Grande well above her waist, with his fingers pressing against one side of her chest. The preacher apologised in an interview with The Associated Press at the cemetery where Franklin was interred late Friday. "It would never be my intention to touch any woman's breast. ... I don't know I guess I put my arm around her," Mr Ellis said. "Maybe I crossed the border, maybe I was too friendly or familiar but again, I apologise." He said he hugged all the performers during Friday's eight-hour service. "I hug all the female artists and the male artists," Mr Ellis said. "Everybody that was up, I shook their hands and hugged them. That's what we are all about in the church. We are all about love." He added: "The last thing I want to do is to be a distraction to this day. This is all about Aretha Franklin." Many people posted close-up images of the moment on Twitter, tagging it #RespectAriana. Aretha Franklin funeral: How pastor's bleak view of 'abortion after birth' in black America provoked fury Mr Ellis also apologised to Grande, her fans and the Hispanic community for making a joke about seeing her name on the programme and thinking it was a new item on the Taco Bell menu. "I personally and sincerely apologise to Ariana and to her fans and to the whole Hispanic community," he said. "When you're doing a program for nine hours you try to keep it lively, you try to insert some jokes here and there." Mr Ellis' touching of Grande overshadowed some criticism earlier in the ceremony the short dress Grande wore for her performance. Numerous people posted criticisms online that the dress was too short for church.
