Posted: 14 Oct 2018 10:09 AM PDT Pope Francis has canonised Pope Paul VI and Salvadoran archbishop Oscar Romero, two of the most contested figures of the Catholic Church in the 20th century, who both had a powerful influence over his papacy. In a ceremony on Sunday that drew more than 70,000 people to St Peter's Square, Francis also presided over the canonisation of five other, including the German founder of a religious congregation, the Spanish founder of another order, two Italian priests and a teen-ager. "All these saints, in different contexts, put today's word into practice in their lives, without lukewarmness, without calculation, with the passion to risk everything and to leave it all behind," Pope Francis said in his homily. A Latin American icon, Archbishop Romero vocally opposed military oppression of El Salvador's right-wing government and was gunned down during Mass in a hospital chapel in March 1980. He was remembered by Francis in his homily as a man who "left the security of the world, even his own safety, in order to give his life according to the Gospel, close to the poor and to his people, with a heart drawn to Jesus and his brothers and sisters." Romero was shot dead by gunmen linked to right-wing death squads, a day after telling an army made up largely of peasants that they were killing their own people. Paul VI guided the Church trough one of its most turbulent modern periods and was the first Pope who travelled abroad, starting a new tradition for his successors. Faced with the issue of whether to change the Church's longstanding opposition to artificial birth control, Paul VI issued his landmark encyclical Humanae Vitae in 1968, delivering a strong "no" to change and reaffirming the Church's position on contraception. |

Bodies of nine climbers killed on Nepal peak found Posted: 13 Oct 2018 09:41 PM PDT A rescue team Sunday began retrieving the bodies of nine climbers killed in a violent storm on Nepal's Mount Gurja, a freak accident that has left the mountaineering community reeling. A helicopter dropped four mountain guides at the camp where the South Korean climbing expedition was staying when powerful winds and snow swept through, killing the entire team and scattering their bodies as far as 500 metre (1,640 foot) away. "All nine bodies have been found and the team are in the process of bringing them down," said Siddartha Gurung, a chopper pilot who is coordinating the retrieval mission. |
More dead expected in destroyed Florida Panhandle towns after Michael Posted: 14 Oct 2018 05:49 PM PDT Dozens of people remained missing on Sunday in Florida Panhandle communities reduced to ruins by Hurricane Michael as rescuers said they expected the death toll to rise and survivors grappled with power outages and shortages of food and water. Already at least 18 deaths in four states have been blamed on the hurricane as rescue crews using cadaver dogs and heavy equipment searched through collapsed homes in small towns such as Mexico Beach and Panama City for more victims. "If we lose only one life, to me that's going to be a miracle," Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey told local media. |

He told BFMTV that the floods in the Aude region also killed four other people in other locations, left one person missing and seriously injured five others. |

Germany deports man convicted over 9/11 terror attack 17 years after atrocity Posted: 15 Oct 2018 06:45 AM PDT Germany has deported a Moroccan man who acted as a "book-keeper" for the 9/11 terrorists, 17 years after the deadly attacks. Mounir el Motassadeq, a member of a terrorist organisation known as the called "Hamburg cell", was imprisoned in 2006 after he was convicted of aiding lead hijacker Mohamed Atta and two other al-Qaeda extremists by paying their tuition and rent to keep the pretence that they were students. Almost 3,000 people were killed when two hijacked planes were flown into the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre on 11 September 2001. |
US Air Force optimistic on hurricane-hit fighter jets Posted: 14 Oct 2018 09:10 PM PDT The United States Air Force said Sunday that a group of F-22 stealth fighters left behind at a base to ride out Hurricane Michael were intact but it was too soon to say whether all of them would fly again. Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida was hit by the Category 4 storm on October 10 and suffered extensive damage, with some hangars partially stripped of their roofs, according to official footage of the coastal facility. Numerous reports had speculated on the fate of an unspecified number of the ultra-advanced fifth-generation fighter jets that could not be flown out to safe havens due to maintenance or safety reasons. |

Paul Allen dies aged 65: Tributes to Microsoft co-founder who 'changed the world' Posted: 15 Oct 2018 03:47 PM PDT Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has died at the age of 65. Mr Allen, who suffered from non-Hodgkin lymphoma, co-founded the software company alongside Bill Gates in 1975. He was also a prominent philanthropist, donating billions to science, conservation and the arts. Eight years after starting the company he received his first cancer diagnosis, but it was treated successfully, though it forced him to retire early from his role at Microsoft. He developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2009, which had been in remission until it returned earlier this year. In a statement released at the start of this month Mr Allen said he planned to fight the disease "aggressively". "A lot has happened in medicine since I overcame this disease in 2009. My doctors are optimistic that I will see good results from the latest therapies, as am I," he said. On Monday his sister Jody Allen called him a "remarkable individual on every level". "While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend. "For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends. "At this time of loss and grief for us - and so many others - we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day," she said. Current Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said his contributions to technology had been "indispensable". "As co-founder of Microsoft, in his own quiet and persistent way, he created magical products, experiences and institutions, and in doing so, he changed the world," he said. Mr Allen never married and had no children, and was sometimes described as reclusive. His early exit from Microsoft meant he dedicated much of his life to scientific and technological research, including the foundation of the Allen Institute, which began by focusing on neuroscience but has widened its approach to cover bioscience, and a more recent project to build a reusable space plane, designed to launch satellites. He also owned American football team the Seattle Seahawks and basketball team the Portland Trailblazers. In a joint statement the organisations paid tribute to Mr Allen. On their behalf Bill Hilf, CEO of Vulcan, which oversaw his businesses, said: "All of us who had the honor of working with Paul feel inexpressible loss today. "He possessed a remarkable intellect and a passion to solve some of the world's most difficult problems, with the conviction that creative thinking and new approaches could make profound and lasting impact. "Millions of people were touched by his generosity, his persistence in pursuit of a better world, and his drive to accomplish as much as he could with the time and resources at his disposal." |
