Yahoo News Explains: Can Trump quash the White House press corps? Posted: 19 Nov 2018 11:55 AM PST CNN's Jim Acosta is reporting at the White House again after a judge ruled that the Trump administration overstepped the law in revoking his access. You are a rude, terrible person," Trump told Acosta. Lawyers for the administration argued, "The President and White House possess the same broad discretion to regulate access to the White House for journalists that they possess to select which journalists receive interviews. |
Argentine submarine find 'first step' to learning disaster's cause Posted: 18 Nov 2018 12:10 PM PST Families of the victims have called for the ARA San Juan to be refloated, an enormous undertaking that authorities cautioned was likely beyond their means. Crushed from an implosion, the submarine was located at a depth of more than 900 meters (3,000 feet) in a desolate area of undersea craters and canyons 400 kilometers (250 miles) off the coast of Argentina. An underwater robot sent down by the Seabed Constructor, which specializes in ultra-deep water exploration, relayed 67,000 images of the sunken vessel. |
Libya Oil Boss Sees Country Exempted From Future OPEC+ Cuts Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:46 AM PST "The OPEC community has understood the difficulties we face –- Libya has withheld more than any other country from the global market," National Oil Corp. Chairman Mustafa Sanalla wrote in a phone message. OPEC and its allies are considering cutting oil output in 2019 as the group is increasingly concerned about the potential for oversupply. Libya, along with Nigeria, has been exempt from cuts since January 2017 due to domestic conflict. |
Joe Biden adopted a German shepherd and he's precious :') Posted: 18 Nov 2018 07:26 AM PST Joe Biden just welcomed a majorly cute addition to his family — a German shepherd named Major. On Saturday, the former Vice President and his wife Jill officially adopted Major the rescue dog, who they've been fostering, from the Delaware Humane Association in Wilmington, Delaware. SEE ALSO: Barack Obama and Joe Biden got lunch together, because some bromances never die "We are so happy to welcome Major to the Biden family, and we are grateful to the Delaware Humane Association for their work in finding forever homes for Major and countless other animals," the Bidens said in a statement that the shelter shared to Facebook. According to the Delaware Humane Association, Major was one of six puppies brought to the shelter "after being exposed to something toxic in their home." Their original owner was unable to afford proper veterinary care, so they began looking for loving homes. After sharing the pup's stories on social media, Biden reportedly reached out to show interest, and that's how he fell in love with Major. The DHA shared several photos of the former VP making the adoption official on Facebook, including one of Biden showing Major a picture of himself as a puppy. DHA also shared a photo and video of the two leaving the shelter. From the looks of it, Major seems right at home with Biden and has quite the support team back at the shelter. Here's hoping he'll get to play with Bo and Sunny Obama soon. On patrol with the Iraqi militia hunting the last remnants of the Islamic State group Posted: 19 Nov 2018 09:05 AM PST Although the Islamic State group has been defeated militarily in Iraq, members of the militia group still find areas to hide. Some parts of the Sunni population give them shelter. They also find cover in the mountains around Hawija. From their hiding places, they set up attacks: Suddenly popping up at improvised checkpoints in the winding roads that lead through the hills, they arrest or kill those passing, or take hostages and blackmail the government for possible prisoner exchanges. They also place IEDs and send suicide attackers into cities in the region. Iraqi federal police have outposts in the region, but their patrols only operate during the day. At night, they retreat to their bases, when the caliphate of terror becomes a guerrilla terror group. The Islamic State group's favorite targets are members of the Shia militia al-Hashd al-Shaabi. Also known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, are Shia-dominated militia was created in 2014 following a fatwa issued by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric. Victory over the Islamic State group in Iraq would be inconceivable without al-Hashd al-Shaabi, which filled the gap left by the Iraqi Army. But they are also an Iran-supported force operating in a traditional Sunni area in Iraq. And members of the Shia-dominated militia have been accused of massacring Iraqi Sunnis. Today, al-Hashd al-Shaabi is fighting sleeper cells and defending against Islamic State group attacks. Unlike the Iraqi federal police in the region, they can react quickly because they don't have to follow a strict chain of command. _____ Based in Berlin, freelance photojournalist Sebastian Backhaus covers humanitarian crises and wars throughout the Middle East. These photographs were taken while Backhaus was embedded with the al-Hashd al-Shaabi during their search for hidden Islamic State group members. _____ See more news-related photo galleries and follow us on Yahoo News Photo Twitter and Tumblr. |
Yemen’s Houthis halt missile attacks on Saudi coalition Posted: 18 Nov 2018 03:40 PM PST International pressure has mounted on Yemen's warring parties to end the war that has killed more than 10,000 people and pushed the country to the verge of starvation. The move from the Houthi group came after the Saudi-led coalition ordered a halt in its offensive against Yemen's main port city Hodeidah, which has become the focus of the war. "After our contacts with the U.N. envoy and his request to stop drone and missile strikes ... We announce our initiative ... to halt missile and drone strikes on the countries of aggression," Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, the head of the Houthis' Supreme Revolutionary Committee, said in a statement. |
Christopher Watts sentenced to life in prison for murder of pregnant wife and two daughters Posted: 19 Nov 2018 02:41 PM PST A man who strangled his pregnant wife to death before killing his two daughters wanted to get out of his marriage and away from his growing family, prosecutors have said as he was sentenced by a judge. The motive was assigned on Monday as Christopher Watts was sentenced to life in prison without parole in a Colorado court, a punishment secured as a part of a plea deal. Watts, 33, pleaded guilty to the charges two weeks ago, admitting that he killed his pregnant wife Shanann, 34, and their two daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. |

Trump would not intervene if Whitaker moves to curtail Mueller probe Posted: 18 Nov 2018 08:45 AM PST In an interview with the "Fox News Sunday" program taped on Friday, Trump also said he probably would not agree to a sit-down interview with Mueller, who also is investigating whether the Republican president's campaign conspired with Moscow and whether Trump has unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe. Whitaker took over supervision of Mueller's investigation on Nov. 7 after Trump appointed him as the chief U.S. law enforcement official to replace Jeff Sessions, who the president ousted. Whitaker, who Democrats have called a Trump "political lackey," in the past criticized the scope of the Mueller probe and brought up the possibility of undermining it by slashing Mueller's funding. |

NASA's 2020 rover will land in an ancient, dried-up lakebed to hunt for past life on Mars Posted: 19 Nov 2018 11:36 AM PST NASA's next car-sized rover will plummet through the thin Martian atmosphere and softly land on the floor of a dried-up lakebed, the space agency announced Monday. When the robot arrives on Mars about 8 months after its launch in 2020, NASA will endeavor to land the six-wheeled rover in the Jezero Crater, a 30 mile-wide bowl about 1,640 feet deep. It's believed to have once held an 800-foot deep lake some 3.5 billion years ago. The space agency hopes to accomplish a number of things during the at least two-year mission. But the first science directive is to "determine whether life ever arose on Mars." Indeed, today Mars is extremely unlikely to harbor any life — on the surface, at least. It's a heavily irradiated, dry, frigid desert, with no liquid water. "But it wasn't always that way," Ken Farley, the Mars 2020 project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a press call. Ancient water canals leading out of the Jezero Crater.Image: NASA Mars Reconnaissance OrbiterNASA scientists suspect Mars was once a blue world, like Earth. And as bodies of water on Earth are teeming with life, NASA wants to scour the Jezero lakebed for signs that past microbial life could have survived there, or perhaps clear signs of long-dead life itself. "All things point to the idea that we should be looking to ancient Mars for a surface-habitable environment, said Farley. "Lakes on Earth are both habitable and inevitably inhabited." The Jezero landing site also allows NASA scientists to rove over a dried-up river delta where water once flowed out of the lake. This environment likely held nutrient-rich clay minerals that could have been an ideal place for Martian microbes to flourish, as they do in moist clays on Earth. SEE ALSO: The secretive lab that built 'the bomb' now scours Mars for signs of life The 2020 rover comes equipped with of slew of scientific instruments, making it a bonafide mobile laboratory. It carries a ground-penetrating radar, an experimental machine that produces oxygen from atmospheric carbon dioxide, and tools to store five tubes filled with Martian rocks and soil — to be carried back to Earth by another future mission one day. "Getting samples from this lake-delta system will revolutionize how we think about Mars and its ability to harbor life," Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said during the call. An artist's conception of the 2020 rover.Image: nasaOne of the most significant tools for sleuthing out past evidence of Martian life — if not the most critical — is the SuperCam, a high-tech camera perched atop the 2020 rover. Once the rover lands, NASA scientists know there will be countless places of interest to visit, so the SuperCam will fire lasers to detect the make-up of rocks and chemicals from 25 feet away. Then, the rover will slowly rumble over to most promising places — places that could have once sustained hardy, microscopic life. Such ancient evidence will be difficult to find — should it exist at all. "It [Mars] may not yield its secrets easily," Roger Wiens, a planetary scientist who heads the team that built the SuperCam, said this summer. While exploring the Martian surface with the new rover — should it successfully land — NASA also hopes to collect information that will support human visitation to Mars — a longer-term goal for the 2030s. While NASA wants to return astronauts to the moon in the coming decade, the next logical step is Mars. "Mars is really the obvious place after the moon," said Zurbuchen. And the 2020 rover is expected to pave the way there. WATCH: Ever wonder how the universe might end? |
