Ex-Trump aide Flynn faces sentencing Posted: 18 Dec 2018 07:18 AM PST President Donald Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn was slated to face sentencing Tuesday over lies he told about his Russia contacts, with a judge expected to give him minimal or no jail time. Flynn was one of the first to face charges in the sweeping Mueller investigation into possible collusion with Moscow in the 2016 election, reaching a plea deal announced just over one year ago. Since then prosecutors say the decorated former Marine general has cooperated substantially in their investigation, earning a recommendation of no jail time from Special Counsel Robert Mueller. |

Migrant family who fled tear gas at U.S. border seeks asylum Posted: 17 Dec 2018 09:12 PM PST The family appeared in a widely circulated photograph taken by Reuters as they fled tear gas thrown by U.S. authorities during a protest at the border last month when some migrants rushed the U.S. fence. Sandra Cordero, from advocacy group Families Belong Together, which accompanied the migrants, said eight unaccompanied minors were being processed for asylum. A system dubbed "metering" limits how many can ask for asylum each day at U.S. ports of entry, leading to months-long waits in Mexico for thousands of migrants fleeing violence in Central America. |
General Dynamics Warns Trudeau Over Exit Penalties in Saudi Deal Posted: 17 Dec 2018 12:18 PM PST In a television interview Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government was looking for a way to halt the sale of armored vehicles manufactured by a unit of U.S.-based General Dynamics Corp. "We are engaged with the export permits to try and see if there is a way of no longer exporting these vehicles to Saudi Arabia," Trudeau told CTV, without elaborating. The company's Canadian unit, in a written statement Monday, warned that doing so could leave the government on the hook for penalties. |

U.S. border agents will not speak to lawmakers about girl's death Posted: 18 Dec 2018 04:24 AM PST Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Tuesday plan to visit the New Mexico patrol station where Jakelin Caal and her father were taken on Dec. 7 to learn more about why she died the next day. Caal's death fueled criticism of President Donald Trump's immigration policies from Democrats and migrant advocates. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said it showed the dangers of her journey and the family's decision to cross the border illegally. |

Britain, Switzerland reach post-Brexit aviation deal Posted: 17 Dec 2018 05:21 AM PST Switzerland and Britain signed an agreement Monday guaranteeing that flights between the two countries can continue uninterrupted even if London opts to leave the European Union without a deal with Brussels. Total costs related to closing 73 Sears stores and 28 Kmart stores in the third quarter ended Nov. 3 amounted to $229 million, the company said earlier this month. The charges entail markdowns, severance costs and lease termination costs arising from store closures, which the company announced in October, when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. |
Clashes Between Nigerian Farmers and Herders Have Killed Thousands, Amnesty Says Posted: 17 Dec 2018 03:30 AM PST The London-based human rights organization blamed the escalation in the conflict on the authorities' failure to investigate the violence or prosecute perpetrators, according to the report on its website. "The authorities' lethargy has allowed impunity to flourish and the killings to spread to many parts of the country, inflicting greater suffering on communities who already live in constant fear of the next attack," Amnesty's Nigeria director, Osai Ojigho, said in the report released on Monday. The army condemned the report and accused Amnesty's Nigerian branch of trying to destabilize the nation. |

For years, Dora waited impatiently to turn 15, the age her mother had agreed she would be old enough to leave their home in El Salvador – where she suffered physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her grandfather – and head to the US, in search of a new life. "Seeing them leave together … that gave me hope and gave me the courage to finally leave," said Dora, who is now living at a children's shelter in Tijuana, on the border with California. |

As Ex-Premier Returns, Calls for Sri Lanka Election Grow Louder Posted: 16 Dec 2018 09:40 PM PST Sirisena on Sunday swore in Wickremesinghe, who he'd abruptly fired on Oct. 26 and replaced with former strongman president Mahinda Rajapaksa. "With the issues we have, I am not sure what guarantee we have that we could go on this journey together," Sirisena told a crowd that included Wickremesinghe and other lawmakers. Analysts believe Sirisena originally appointed Rajapaksa to cash in on his enduring popularity, particularly after a party backed by the former strongman defeated the ruling coalition in local elections earlier this year. |

Sullivan also noted that Flynn had operated as an undeclared lobbyist for Turkey even as he worked on Trump's campaign team and prepared to be his White House national security adviser. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents about his December 2016 conversations with Sergei Kislyak, then Russia's ambassador in Washington, about U.S. sanctions imposed on Moscow by the administration of Trump's Democratic predecessor Barack Obama. |

Corbyn Proposes No-Confidence Motion in PM May: Brexit Update Posted: 17 Dec 2018 10:19 AM PST After his office said first that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn would propose a no-confidence motion in May -- and then said that he didn't need to because she'd announced a date for a vote -- he has now said he'll propose such a motion immediately. This is a motion of no confidence in May, not in her government, so it's not the type that could potentially trigger a general election. For that reason it has a greater chance of passing, as some Conservatives opposed to May's Brexit strategy might vote for it. |
