Lawyer denies tabloid blackmailed Amazon boss Bezos Posted: 10 Feb 2019 02:21 PM PST A lawyer denied Sunday allegations by Jeff Bezos that the National Enquirer tabloid had tried to extort and blackmail him, insisting that embarrassing photographs were obtained from a "reliable" source. "What happened was the story was given to the National Enquirer by a reliable source that had been given information to the National Enquirer for seven years prior to the story. |
Dem. Leaders Demand Omar Apologize for Endorsing ‘Anti-Semitic Tropes’ Posted: 11 Feb 2019 11:29 AM PST Update 3:04p.m.: Omar apologized for her comments in a Monday afternoon tweet. House Democratic leaders issued a joint statement Monday calling on Representative Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) to apologize for endorsing the "anti-Semitic trope" that Jewish donors leverage their wealth for nefarious political purposes. "Legitimate criticism of Israel's policies is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate that the United States and Israel share," read the statement, which was signed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and other Democratic leaders. |

At Khomeini's Iraqi place of exile, Iranians remember revolution's leader Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:50 AM PST The former home of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who in 1979 led an uprising that ousted the Shah of Iran, is bustling with tourists on the 40th anniversary of the birth of the Islamic Republic. Escaping for a moment Najaf's crowded Shi'ite Muslim shrine nearby, they tour the humble home which is now a museum and gallery showcasing Khomeini's political and personal life. "The house captures the spirit of Khomeini. |
Conjoined twins die in Yemen due to lack of medical equipment Posted: 10 Feb 2019 06:24 AM PST Conjoined twin boys born under blockade in Yemen nearly three weeks ago died on Saturday after attempts to secure a potentially life-saving evacuation failed. In a statement carried by the Houthi-run Saba news, the health ministry said the twins' deaths reflected the humanitarian situation Yemen's children are facing as a result of the war. The boys' plight and the flurry of international media it generated has cast the politics of Yemen's war and their human cost into stark relief. Abdelkhaleq and Abdelkarim were born in Houthi-controlled Sanaa, at a hospital so woefully underequipped after years of bombardment and blockade by the Saudi-led coalition that doctors could perform an MRI. The twins' doctors had begged for them to be evacuated to a hospital equipped to give them life-saving treatment. "They need to travel immediately. They will not be able to survive in Yemen under the social, political and economic circumstances in this country," said Dr Faisal al-Balbali, the head of the neonatal unit at al-Thawra hospital in Sanaa. But Yemen's airspace is controlled by the Saudi-led coalition and, following Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, no civilian flights have taken off from Sanaa since 2015. The only flights permitted in and out are those operated by the United Nations. Despite offers from a Saudi organisation, the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works, to provide the needed medical care, no way around the blockade was found. Yemen's nearly four-year war has seen the country brought to the brink of starvation, its infrastructure destroyed, as Iran-backed Houthi rebels battle the Saudi-led coalition which aims to restore the government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was ousted by the Houthis in 2014. UN-led peace talks re-started in December 2018 and aim to implement a ceasefire and military withdrawal in Red Sea port city Hodeidah, and to reopen Sanaa airport. |

Trump Is Rooting for Ocasio-Cortez’s Democratic Party Posted: 11 Feb 2019 09:18 AM PST For the moment, at least, the energy in the Democratic Party is all on the left – and I mean hard left. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the charismatic and camera-ready new congresswoman from New York, champions the Democrats' current zeal for symmetry. The filmmaker Michael Moore, for one, calls her the leader of the party and wishes the Constitution could be changed so that she doesn't need to wait until she's 35 to be president (she's 29). |

Zimbabwe teachers' unions suspend national strike Posted: 10 Feb 2019 10:36 AM PST Zimbabwean teachers have suspended a national strike seeking better pay, unions said on Sunday, but warned that they could walk out from their jobs again if the government did not meet their demands. Teachers went on strike on Feb. 5 after negotiations between the government and public-sector workers broke down, heightening political tension after last month's violent protests that were met by a security crackdown. Teachers' unions met Education Minister Paul Mavima in Harare and agreed to return to work on Monday. |

Risk of Repeat Shutdown Renews D.C. Blame Game Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:37 AM PST Washington is careening toward another government shutdown after border security negotiations between Republicans and Democrats broke down over the weekend. Democrats also are demanding language blocking President Donald Trump from shifting funds to pay for his Mexico border wall, which was at the center of the impasse that prompted the most recent shutdown. While negotiations could still get back on track in the next 24 hours, Trump – who heads to El Paso, Texas today to press the case for a wall – suggested on Twitter that Democrats are instigating a second shutdown to distract from positive economic news and a racially charged controversy surrounding party officials in Virginia. |

Thai princess disqualified from list of candidates for PM Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:10 AM PST Thai Princess Ubolratana was on Monday formally disqualified for running for prime minister, ending her brief and ill-fated political union with a party allied to the powerful Shinawatra clan, just days after a stern royal command rebuking her candidacy was issued by her brother, the king. Uncertainty and conjecture have coursed through Thailand since Friday when the Thai Raksa Chart party made the explosive announcement of Princess Ubolratana, King Maha Vajiralongkorn's elder sister, as their candidate for premier after the March 24 election. A royal command from the king put a pin in her unprecedented political aspirations, insisting the monarchy was above politics and describing his sister's candidacy as "highly inappropriate". |

Virginia official accused of rape will have to resign if allegations are true: governor Posted: 10 Feb 2019 06:45 PM PST In a CBS interview to be broadcast on Monday, Governor Ralph Northam said he had learned from the controversy that erupted on Feb. 1 when a racist photo surfaced from his medical school yearbook, and that as a former pediatrician he could help Virginians heal. Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass," Northam told CBS "This Morning" co-host Gayle King. "And that's why I'm not going anywhere." According to excerpts of the interview provided on Sunday by CBS, Northam was asked about allegations of sexual crimes, including rape, that have been made by two women against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, a fellow Democrat who is African-American and the state's second-highest elected official. |

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 01:35 PM PST A teenager has told how be secretly got vaccinated against the wishes of his parents, who he claimed believed debunked anti-vaccine "conspiracy theories", they read on the internet. Ethan Lindenberger, 18, appealed for help on a Reddit forum, asking which vaccines he should obtain as he said had never received any, because "my parents are kind of stupid and don't believe in vaccines". After reading the advice, and consulting with a pastor, the teenager last December walked into a department of heath office in Norwalk, Ohio, and obtained vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza and HPV. |

S. Korea announces hike in payment for US troops Posted: 09 Feb 2019 11:50 PM PST Seoul said Sunday it agreed to hike its payment for maintaining American troops on its soil, settling a dispute with its longtime ally ahead of a second summit between the US and North Korea. The two countries have been in a security alliance since the 1950-53 Korean war, which ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty -- with more than 28,000 US troops stationed in the South to guard against threats from Pyongyang. The negotiations ended with South Korea's foreign ministry saying Seoul will pay about 1.04 trillion won (US$924 million) in 2019, 8.2 percent more than what it offered under a previous five-year pact which expired at the end of last year. |

Senator Klobuchar joins Democratic presidential field Posted: 10 Feb 2019 01:34 PM PST Klobuchar becomes the fifth U.S. senator to announce her candidacy, and the fourth woman in the chamber. Klobuchar, 58, now in her third six-year term as a senator for Minnesota, will seek to position herself as a contrast to Trump, who is expected to be the Republican candidate in the November 2020 election, focusing on both policy differences but also style and tact. "I stand before you as the granddaughter of an iron ore miner, the daughter of a teacher and a newspaperman, the first woman elected to the United States Senate from the state of Minnesota, to announce my candidacy for president of the United States," Klobuchar said. |

Venezuela opposition announces new aid hub, prepares protest Posted: 11 Feb 2019 01:58 PM PST Venezuela's opposition announced Monday a new collection center for desperately-needed supplies as it prepares to "send a message" to the military that's blocking humanitarian aid from entering the crisis-wracked country with a mass street protest. Opposition chief Juan Guaido, now recognized by 50 countries as Venezuela's interim president, will lead a rally on Tuesday as he steps up pressure on beleaguered President Nicolas Maduro and tries to force the military to back down and allow in the aid. Venezuela is in the midst of a disastrous economic crisis marked by hyperinflation, recession and shortages of basic necessities such as food and medicines. |
Virginia Governor Says Deputy May Need to Quit Over Allegations Posted: 10 Feb 2019 09:42 AM PST The comments come after a week of turmoil in the commonwealth that one opinion poll shows has residents evenly split over the best course of action for Virginia's top elected officials, and as President Donald Trump and other Republicans weigh in as well. The sit-down with CBS was the Democratic governor's first television interview since a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook emerged on Feb. 1, prompting leading Democrats to call for Northam's resignation. |

Toppled Malaysian leader's 1MDB trial delayed Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:01 AM PST Former Malaysian premier Najib Razak's trial over a massive financial scandal that contributed to his government's downfall was postponed Monday, in a blow to slow-moving efforts to bring the disgraced politician to justice. Najib had been due to go on trial Tuesday for the first time over allegations linked to his involvement in the looting of Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB in a fraud that reverberated around the world. Billions of dollars were allegedly stolen by Najib and his cronies from 1MDB, which was set up to help develop Malaysia's economy, and spent on everything from high-end real estate to expensive artworks. |
