Say what you will about Trump, but his tactics on North Korea are working Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:00 AM PST Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Kim Jong-un in Hanoi this week to discuss North Korea's denuclearization. When Donald Trump sits down with Kim Jong-un in Hanoi this week to further discuss eliminating North Korea's nuclear capability, there are lots of reasons to doubt that the American president can pull it off. |

Pope, ending conference, calls for 'all-out battle' against abuse of minors Posted: 24 Feb 2019 02:28 AM PST VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis, ending a landmark Vatican conference on clergy sexual abuse of minors, called on Sunday for an "all-out battle" against a crime he called abominable and that should be "erased from the face of the earth". Francis vowed that the Roman Catholic Church would "spare no effort" to bring abusers to justice and will not cover up or underestimate abuse. He promised that guidelines used by national bishops conferences to prevent abuse and punish perpetrators will be reviewed and strengthened. (Reporting by Philip Pullella; editing by Jason Neely) |

The 25-year-old was shot and later died of his wounds after taking a crew member hostage on the Biman Airlines jet, forcing it to make an emergency landing at Chittagong airport late Sunday. Airport manager Wing Commander Sarwar-e-Jaman said the hijacker was "psychologically imbalanced". |

Venezuela: at least four dead and hundreds injured in border standoff Posted: 23 Feb 2019 07:50 PM PST At least four people have been killed and hundreds injured in a wave of violence that convulsed Venezuela's border regions on Saturday, as opposition activists tried to defy a government ban to bring food and medical supplies into the country. After the failed attempt to breach government blockades, opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared the fight would continue, and said "we must keep all our options open for the liberation of our homeland". Florida senator Marco Rubio responded to Guaidó's comments, saying he had spoken to regional leaders. |

Weekend beauty highlights from Milan Fashion Week Posted: 25 Feb 2019 02:02 AM PST Milan Fashion Week put a sophisticated spin on catwalk beauty over the weekend, mixing quirky details with tried-and-tested classics for Fall/Winter 2019. At Giorgio Armani the hair was twisted and pinned in rope-like coils to the head, for a child-like, textured look that was exacerbated by spiky, doll-like lashes and rosy pink lips. At Missoni a peach-hued blusher was dabbed high on the cheekbones for a flushed look that was teamed with a nude, glossy lip and -- in supermodel Bella Hadid's case -- shiny, tidy bangs. |

"If in the Church there should emerge even a single case of abuse – which already in itself represents an atrocity – that case will be faced with the utmost seriousness", Francis promised. |

The elusive Russian operative who could be crucial to Mueller's investigation into Trump Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:43 AM PST In the nearly two years that the special counsel, Robert Mueller, has been investigating whether there was collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, few figures seem to have offered more promising leads than Konstantin V Kilimnik. A diminutive, multilingual political operative who was born in Ukraine while it was still part of the Soviet Union, Kilimnik has continued to attract intense interest from prosecutors for his interactions with his long-time boss and mentor, Paul Manafort, and his suspected ties to Russian intelligence. Kilimnik pops up repeatedly as a possible connection between the Trump campaign and Russia, with ties to both sides that are as enigmatic as they are deep. |

Weak investment climate main 5G risk, not security fears: Ericsson Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:59 AM PST Europe risks falling behind other regions in rolling out 5G mobile services because of onerous regulation and weak investment rather than any security concerns about Chinese equipment, Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said on Monday. High spectrum fees, regulatory uncertainty and a lack of investment were more pressing concerns, Ekholm said, alluding to calls by the United States to ban Chinese network vendors on national security grounds. "The debate here often becomes: it's the lack of technology for operators, that's what slowed down Europe. |

Japan's Okinawa votes against controversial US base move Posted: 24 Feb 2019 08:46 AM PST Voters on the Japanese island of Okinawa have rejected the relocation of a controversial US military base, according to official results from a non-binding referendum Sunday. Some 72 percent voted against the move with 19 percent in favour from a 52 percent turnout, the local government said. Opponents of the relocation -- some 434,000 -- had turned out in sufficient numbers to meet the threshold required for Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki to "respect" the result of the symbolic referendum, it said. |
