New Zealand mosque shootings: everything we know so far about the Christchurch attacks Posted: 16 Mar 2019 04:53 AM PDT Four people are in custody after 50 people were killed and 20 more were seriously injured in shootings at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. New Zealand Police said there had been "multiple fatalities" following what they described as a "tragic series of events" in the Canterbury region on Friday. Follow this developing story live here What has happened in Christchurch? Officers first responded to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch at about 1.40pm local time (12.40am GMT). Two shootings took place at two separate mosques in the city, one at Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue and another at Masjid Mosque, Linwood Avenue. Police said they also defused a number of improvised explosive devices found on vehicles after the shootings. All schools and council buildings were put on lockdown and members of the public were told not to go outside. The lockdown has since been lifted. Christchurch Mosque shootings Attack 'streamed live' New Zealand police have warned that "extremely distressing footage" exists relating to the shooting in Christchurch and have urged that it not be shared. A video reportedly streamed live on Facebook showed a gunman filming himself firing at worshipers inside the Al Noor mosque. Facebook later said they had removed the video and disabled the account. The suspects Four people were taken into police custody following the attack. A white male dressed in camouflage, army-style clothing who identified himself as Brenton Tarrant filmed himself opening fire in the Al Noor mosque. Twenty-eight-year-old Australian Brenton Harrison Tarrant appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder over the attack. Police said more charges would follow. Wearing handcuffs and a white prison shirt, the Australian-born former fitness instructor and self-professed fascist sat impassively as the judge read the charge against him. He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance scheduled for April 5. New Zealand mosque massacre - In pictures Jacinda Ardern said: "This individual has travelled around the world with sporadic periods of time spent in New Zealand. "They were not a resident of Christchurch, in fact they were currently based in Dunedin at the time of this event. "Inquiries are ongoing to establish whether the other two who were arrested were directly involved with this incident. "The forth person who was arrested yesterday was a member of the public who was in possession of a firearm, but with the intention of assisting police. "They have since been released." Tarrant left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for his actions. He said he considered it a terrorist attack. Ms Ardern says the suspect held a Category A gun licence which enabled him to legally obtain semi-automatic weapons. She says the country's gun laws will change in the wake of the attack. A large crowd gathered on the Champs-Elysees avenue for the 18th straight week of anti-government protests which initially rocked President Emmanuel Macron's administration, forcing him to adopt more anti-poverty measures, but had appeared to fizzle in recent weeks. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters who erected barricades near the Champs-Elysees in scenes reminiscent of some of the most tense "yellow vest" rallies. |

A giant storage tank containing volatile naphtha at Intercontinental Terminals Co (ITC) Deer Park site continued to burn six hours after the blaze broke out at about 10:30 a.m. local time (1530 GMT). Ships were continuing to move along the ship channel which connects refineries and chemical plants in Houston and Texas City, Texas, with the Gulf of Mexico. |
French investigators resume work on Ethiopian jet's black boxes Posted: 16 Mar 2019 05:52 AM PDT France's air accident investigation agency said on Saturday it had resumed work analyzing the black boxes from an Ethiopian Airways plane that crashed last week, in coordination with teams from Boeing as well as U.S. and EU aviation safety authorities. The black boxes' data should provide answers to why the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft hurtled into the ground minutes after take off last Sunday from Addis Ababa, killing 157 people. The French agency said that, in addition to Boeing, teams were also attending from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. |

NASA administrator Bridenstine wants everyone to know he still has faith in the SLS Posted: 17 Mar 2019 11:07 AM PDT Well, that certainly didn't take long! Just a day after NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine alluded to the possibility of flying the new Orion crew capsule's first experimental trip around the Moon using a pair of commercial rockets instead of NASA's own Space Launch System which is still in development, he's issued a new statement assuring everyone that the SLS is still a major part of NASA's future.In a new memo sent to all NASA employees and contractors, Bridenstine clarifies his statement and reassures everyone that NASA still very much anticipates the SLS rocket platform to be its next big thing.The original plan was for NASA to have both the Orion spacecraft and the SLS rocket system ready to test by mid 2020. The two would pair up for Orion's first test flight around the Moon with no crew on board. It's become clear in recent months that while Orion will likely meet its launch window, the SLS is falling behind.A potential solution, Bridenstine said earlier this week, would be to use a pair of commercial rockets to send Orion into Earth orbit and then around the Moon. This left some questioning what the first run of the SLS hardware might be used for once it's completed."Our goal would be to test Orion in lunar orbit in 2020 and free up the first SLS for the launch of habitation or other hardware in 2021," the administrator explained in the memo. "This would get us back on schedule for a crewed lunar orbital mission in 2022 with the added bonus of a lunar destination for our astronauts."None of this is set in stone yet, of course, and NASA says it's going to take around two weeks to study the feasibility of shifting the timeline and using commercial rockets in place of the first SLS rocket hardware. We'll know whether NASA intends to move forward with the new plan soon. |
