Venezuela's Maduro seeks to display military loyalty in political crisis Posted: 02 May 2019 08:39 AM PDT Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and key military figures made a show of unity in a television broadcast on Thursday, seeking to reject claims by the United States and the opposition that the armed forces high command was prepared to turn on him. Flanked by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino and military operations chief Remigio Ceballos, Maduro said in a dawn national address posted first to social media that the armed forces were "united, cohesive and subordinate to their constitutional mandate," just two days after opposition leader Juan Guaido urged the military to join him to oust Maduro. |

Sri Lanka attack mastermind used chatrooms to sway suicide bombers Posted: 03 May 2019 02:28 AM PDT While Sri Lanka Easter suicide attacks mastermind Zahran Hashim used social media to publicly call for the death of non-Muslims, he worked for months in private chatrooms to persuade six young men to sacrifice themselves, Muslim community leaders say. Christians and foreign tourists were badly hit in the attacks on three churches and three hotels that killed 257 people, but Sri Lanka's Muslim community has also been badly scarred and has been looking into the backgrounds of Hashim and his jihadist acolytes. Hashim, who died in an attack on the Shangri-La hotel on April 21, inspired wealthy brothers Ilham Ibrahim and Inshaf Ibrahim to join and bankroll his assault, police and fellow Muslims said. |

Venezuela opposition figure, facing arrest warrant, says he met with generals Posted: 03 May 2019 05:56 AM PDT Suggesting coordination continues with armed forces figures in the campaign to oust Maduro, Lopez said more "military movements" were on the way. The pre-dawn military uprising on Tuesday, urged on by opposition leader and Lopez ally Juan Guaido, failed to gain steam as security forces loyal to Maduro cracked down on demonstrators who had taken to the streets in support of Guaido. Lopez, a firebrand politician and Guaido's mentor, was arrested during a protest movement in 2014 and transferred to house arrest in 2017. |
Scientology cruise ship quarantined off Saint Lucia over measles outbreak, says coastguard Posted: 01 May 2019 11:49 PM PDT A cruise ship reportedly owned and operated by the Church of Scientology has been quarantined off the coast of Saint Lucia after a case of measles was diagnosed on board. The Caribbean island's health authorities barred any passengers or crew from leaving the boat while in port after learning of the measles case from "two reputable sources".Almost 300 passengers and crew are believed to be on board the vessel, with one person diagnosed with the highly infections viral illness. The boat is called Freewinds and is owned and operated by the Church of Scientology, a Saint Lucia coast guard sergeant told NBC News. The Scientology website describes Freewinds as "a 440-foot ship based in the Caribbean". It characterises the vessel as a "religious retreat ministering the most advanced level of spiritual counselling in the Scientology religion" with its home port in the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao. The international vessel-monitoring website MarineTraffic.com also showed that a Panamanian-flagged passenger ship identified as SMV Freewinds docked in port near the Saint Lucia capital of Castries.Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard spent much of his time at sea on a fleet of ships during the late 1960s and early 1970s after creating his "Sea Org".Dr Merlene Frederick-James said in a video statement posted to YouTube on Tuesday that the Saint Lucian ministry of health ordered the restriction after conferring with the Pan American Health Organisation and others about the risk of exposure to islanders. Officials told NBC News the ship has been under the quarantine since Monday. In light of current measles outbreaks in the US and the highly infectious nature of the disease "we thought it prudent that we quarantine the ship", Ms Frederick-James said. The quarantine comes as the number of measles cases in the US has reached a 25-year peak with more than 700 people diagnosed as of this week, part of an international resurgence in the disease.Public health officials blame declining vaccination rates in some communities driven by misinformation about inoculation that has left those populations vulnerable to rapid spread of infection among those with no immunity to the virus.Health authorities in Los Angeles last month ordered quarantines on two university campuses after each one had reported at least one confirmed case. The vast majority of US cases have occurred in children who have not received the three-way vaccines against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), which confers immunity to the disease, officials said.Measles is spread through casual contact with the virus, which can remain infectious in the air of an enclosed space for up to two hours after it is breathed out by someone carrying the disease. The rate of transmission from an infected person to another person nearby who lacks immunity is about 90 per cent, and an infected person can be contagious for four days before showing signs of the disease.Additional reporting by Reuters |

"After discussions with the government, the company has agreed to withdraw the cases against the farmers," a PepsiCo India spokesman said on Thursday, adding that this applied to all nine. The decision comes at a particularly sensitive time in India, which is about halfway through a 39-day general election in which its rural population still has a dominant voice. |

Trump: Putin ‘Not Looking at All to Get Involved in Venezuela’ Posted: 03 May 2019 02:18 PM PDT President Donald Trump said Friday after a phone call with Russian president Vladimir Putin that Putin has no desire to involve Russia in the spiraling political crisis in Venezuela."We talked about many things. Venezuela was one of the topics. And he is not looking at all to get involved in Venezuela other than he'd like to see something positive happen for Venezuela, and I feel the same way," Trump told reporters at the White House. The U.S. recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's rightful leader, while Russia supports President Nicolás Maduro's socialist regime. The call between Trump and Putin was apparently their first conversation since Guaidó launched an effort to overthrow Maduro earlier this week. A month ago, when Putin sent a contingent of special forces to Caracas, Venezuela's capital, Trump said that "Russia has to get out." And on Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Moscow of convincing Maduro to stay in the country just as he was about to flee amid escalating tensions."He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning as we understand it, and the Russians indicated he should stay," Pompeo said.Guaido, the National Assembly president, this week called on the opposition to take to the streets to oust Maduro, but most of the military has remained loyal to Maduro thus far. Trump said Friday that the main U.S. concern was for the well-being of ordinary Venezuelans."We want to get some humanitarian aid; right now people are starving, they have no water, they have no food," he said. "[Venezuela was] one of the richest countries in the world 20 years ago and now they don't have food and they don't have water for their people. So we want to help on a humanitarian basis." |
College admissions scandal: Chinese family 'paid $6.5 million for spot at Stanford University’ Posted: 02 May 2019 03:27 AM PDT The family of a Chinese student admitted to Stanford University paid $6.5m to the man at the heart of the college admissions scandal, according to reports.Yusi Zhao, also known as Molly, was admitted to Stanford in 2017 after her parents paid Newport Beach college consultant William Singer the seven-figure sum, the Los Angeles Times reported.Neither Ms Zhao nor her parents, who live in Beijing, have been charged, and it is unclear whether they are currently being investigated. Stanford University rescinded Ms Zhao's admission in April, and she is no longer a student there. The person with knowledge of the inquiry said that Ms Zhao's family was introduced to Mr Singer by Michael Wu, a financial adviser at Morgan Stanley based in Pasadena, California. A spokesperson for Morgan Stanley said that Wu had been terminated for not cooperating with an internal investigation into the matter and that the firm was cooperating with the officials. Mr Wu did not respond to a phone call.At a court hearing in March, the lead prosecutor in the admissions case, Eric S Rosen, said that Mr Singer had tried to get Ms Zhao – whom Rosen did not identify by name – recruited to the Stanford sailing team and created a false profile of her supposed sailing achievements. She was ultimately not recruited, but Mr Rosen said that she was admitted to Stanford University partly on the basis of those false credentials. He added that after Ms Zhao's admission, Mr Singer made a $500,000 donation to the Stanford sailing program.Mr Singer has pleaded guilty to racketeering and other charges, for masterminding a scheme that prosecutors say included both cheating on college entrance exams and bribing coaches to recruit students who were not actually competitive athletes. The former Stanford sailing coach, John Vandemoer, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit racketeering.According to Mr Rosen's comments in his plea hearing in March, Mr Vandemoer did not help Zhao's application "in any material way", but accepted other donations from Singer to his programme in exchange for agreeing to reserve recruiting spots for Mr Singer's clients.Mr Vandemoer's lawyer, Robert Fisher, declined to comment.Ms Zhao appears to have participated in a recent conference hosted by the Princeton-US China Coalition. Her biography on the group's website said she was planning to major in psychology and East Asian Studies and was interested in education policy in China. It added that she hoped to be involved in the Chinese government in the future.Ms Zhao worked during a recent summer in a biology and chemistry research lab at Harvard, under the direction of Daniel G Nocera, a professor of energy at the university. Mr Nocera said in an email that Ms Zhao was unpaid and worked for Stanford University credit. At the Stanford campus, several students seemed unfazed by the news that one of their colleagues had paid millions to be there. Tamara Morris, a 20-year-old junior studying political science and African American studies, said she was unaware of the Zhao case. Conversation about the college admissions scandal had died down in recent weeks on campus, Ms Morris said, adding that she was not particularly bothered by the news."I know how I got in," she said.New York Times |
UPDATE 1-Accused gunman in North Carolina college shooting skips court appearance Posted: 02 May 2019 11:49 AM PDT A former student at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte waived his right to a court appearance on Thursday, a prosecutor said, after police say the suspect opened fire in a crowded classroom on Tuesday, killing two students and injuring four. Trystan Terrell, 22, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder after police and witnesses say he began firing a handgun in a classroom full of nearly 50 students on UNC Charlotte's campus shortly before 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The suspect was appointed a public defender and is due to appear in court for a bond hearing on May 15, an assistant district attorney for Mecklenburg County told reporters on Thursday. |

Maduro exhorts Venezuela military to fight 'any coup plotter' Posted: 02 May 2019 06:36 AM PDT Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday called on the armed forces to oppose "any coup plotter" after a failed military uprising by forces supporting opposition leader Juan Guaido. "Yes, we are in combat, keep morale high in this fight to disarm any traitor, any coup plotter," Maduro said at a televised event with the military high command in which he appeared surrounded by soldiers. "No one can be afraid, it is the hour to defend our right to peace," he said at a ceremony in which, according to the government, 4,500 military personnel were present. |

Barr Snubs House Over Mueller as Tensions Soar After Senate Turn Posted: 01 May 2019 05:43 PM PDT Barr is "trying to blackmail the committee," Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler told reporters Wednesday evening, saying that the executive branch doesn't get to dictate the format of the hearing. Nadler added that he may issue a subpoena for the attorney general to show up if he doesn't relent. Barr's decision not to attend the hearing dramatically escalates tensions with the Democratic-controlled committee, which has already authorized a subpoena to the Justice Department to obtain an unredacted version of Mueller's report as well as the underlying evidence. |

What Putin Wants with North Korea Posted: 02 May 2019 05:40 AM PDT The Trump administration continues to pay a high price for treating Russia as an enemy. Vladimir Putin has dealt himself back into the Korea game. He could be helpful if it was worth his while. But as long as Washington undermines Moscow's interests, Putin will toss some cogs into the proverbial wheel. The collapse of the Soviet Union for a time turned Moscow into a geopolitical irrelevancy. Nowhere was that more obvious than in North Korea. The new Russian Federation recognized South Korea, earning a cascade of insults and fulminations from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Pyongyang's protestations bothered the Yeltsin government not at all since the South offered better economic opportunities.Since then Putin has returned Russia to the DPRK, though cautiously and modestly, to be sure. Last week he met North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un in Vladivostok. It was a low-key affair held on a university campus with no statement issued, very different from last year's dramatic meeting between Kim and Donald Trump in Singapore. The North Korean leader called Vladivostok a "very meaningful one-on-one exchange of opinions on issues of mutual interest and current issues," as if the two strongmen were buddies who grabbed a drink and talked sports. But Kim's latest diplomatic venture gave Russia at least a toehold in the peninsula's future. |

Demonstrator killed and dozens injured in Venezuela clashes as opposition protests fizzle out Posted: 02 May 2019 03:50 PM PDT Venezuela's military was thanked by president Nicolas Maduro for resisting calls to rise up against his regime on Thursday after days of violent clashes. In a show of defiance and strength, Mr Maduro took part in an early morning parade alongside what his administration said were 4,500 military personnel. "Yes, we are in combat, keep morale high in this fight to disarm any traitor, any coup plotter," Mr Maduro said at the televised event on Thursday. Pictures showed Mr Maduro, 56, waving in a cap and jacket surrounded by soldiers in uniform at a military base in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital. State television reportedly called the parade a "march to reaffirm the absolute loyalty of the armed forces". Mr Maduro's address was also posted on social media. Thousands took to the streets, but it was not enough Credit: FEDERICO PARRA/ AFP Both Vladimir Padrino, the defence minister, and Remigio Ceballos, the military operations chief, flanked Mr Maduro during the dawn address. The message was an attempt to reassert control after 48 hours which saw calls for a military uprising, protests marred in violence and speculation that senior figures could defect. Juan Guaido, the 35-year-old national assembly leader who declared himself interim president in January, had issued his own social media video surrounded by soldiers on Tuesday morning. National Guards fired tear gas at a hardcore of demonstrators after the majority of protesters went home Credit: MATIAS DELACROIX/AFP That dramatic message had called for the nation's military to rise up against Mr Maduro, who he argues has usurped power on the back of an illegitimate election. On Tuesday and Wednesday violent scenes played out across the country as thousands of supporters of Mr Guaido took to the streets in support for his claim. Security forces who remained loyal to Mr Maduro used tear gas, water cannons and, according to reports on the ground, live fire at times to keep the crowds in control. Venezuela | Read more Human rights organisations and health services reported 46 people injured in Wednesday's clashes, including one person with a gunshot wound. Jurubith Rausseo, 27, died after being hit by a "bullet in the head", according to the non-governmental Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict. One person was killed and dozens injured in Tuesday's clashes, human rights monitors also said. The government said more than 150 people were arrested. Mr Guaido expressed optimism about claiming power during an interview with the Fox Business Network despite Mr Maduro being still in place as the week nears its end. "As long as we are mobilised and united, we are very close to achieving our freedom," he said. "Can't tell you a specific date or time. Working on transition. Democracy has always taken time." |

EU's Tusk warns of risks in rise of U.S. tech giants Posted: 03 May 2019 09:07 AM PDT The world needs to be wary of the rise of tech giants such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, comparing their powers to those of countries such as China, European Council President Donald Tusk said in Warsaw on Friday. "In the East, we see the rise of those capable of controlling everyone's behavior, and in the West we've seen the rise of an uncontrolled, spontaneous empire," Tusk said in Warsaw in reference to the companies during a speech marking Constitution Day. The European Union has been in the forefront of efforts to tighten control on how social media companies handle the personal data of consumers, with rules introduced last May giving regulators the power to impose fines of up to 4 percent of global revenue for violations. |
