US risks losing measles elimination status with record cases

US risks losing measles elimination status with record casesThe United States risks losing its measles "elimination status" if current outbreaks continue, US health authorities said Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Thursday there have been 971 cases of measles reported in the US so far this year, which means more people have caught the disease in the last five months than in any entire calendar year since 1992, which saw 963 reported cases. Authorities declared measles eliminated in the US in 2000, a goal set in 1966 with the introduction of the vaccine.

Riyadh accused Tehran of ordering the drone strikes, which were claimed by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group. U.S. national security adviser John Bolton said on Thursday that evidence of Iran being behind the tanker attacks would be presented to the U.N. Security Council as early as next week.

Trump will win 2020 election unless Democrats impeach, says man who's predicted last 9 presidential elections

Trump will win 2020 election unless Democrats impeach, says man who's predicted last 9 presidential electionsA professor who has accurately predicted every presidential election since 1984 says Donald Trump will win reelection if the Democrats do not impeach him.Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University in Washington DC, told CNN that he's confident Mr Trump will win the 2020 election "unless the Democrats grow a spine and do their constitutional duty and move into an impeachment inquiry."Mr Lichtman points out that the impeachment trial - which happens publicly - is often forgotten in the current discussion surrounding impeachment. He thinks that process, in which house prosecutors present evidence, would have a major impact on election."Richard Nixon, before all the public revelations, was at 67 per cent approval," he said, referring to the Nixon's impeachment hearings following the Watergate situation, which led to his impeachment and resignation. "It was the public revelations of his misdeeds that drove him down to 25 per cent."Following Robert Mueller's report, Senator Elizabeth Warren, who's running for the Democratic nomination to vy against Mr Trump, immediately began calling for impeachment proceedings. She has been followed by several key Democrats. On Sunday, Justin Amash, a Republican congressman from Michigan, became the first member of the House GOP to call for the president's impeachment.Mr Lichtman has accurately predicted the last nine US presidential elections, beginning with Ronald Reagan in 1984. His criteria for predictions lies in 13 key points, including incumbent charisma, challenger charisma, and public arrest."Trump wins again in 2020 unless six of 13 key factors turn against him," he told CNN. "Currently, the President is down only three keys: Republican losses in the midterm elections, the lack of a foreign policy success, and the president's limited appeal to voters."Mr Lichtman has also been predicting a Trump impeachment since he took office, including saying he thought the president would be impeached by "Spring 2018." He was not. "I have no final verdict yet because much could change during the next year," he said.

Galaxy S11 rumored to deliver Samsung’s next big camera innovations

Posted: 31 May 2019 12:24 PM PDT

Galaxy S11 rumored to deliver Samsung's next big camera innovationsWhen the Galaxy Note 10 launches about two months from now, it'll deliver a novel design, maybe the kind of radical update that removes all physical buttons and the headphone jack. Yup, the audio port seems to be history, at least on the Note line. The phone is also expected to sport an S Pen stylus with improved functionality, as well as faster battery charging technology. But what the Galaxy Note 10 won't deliver, in spite of getting a brand new camera system, is a better camera experience than the Galaxy S10 phones. That's because a rumor says Samsung's next major camera evolution is planned for next year's Galaxy S11 instead. That's not to say the Galaxy Note 10 camera will be disappointing. It'll definitely be an upgrade over last year's Note 9, which is already quite impressive. Samsung's triple-lens-or-better module is coming to the upcoming Note 10 series, according to a leak from earlier this week. It's going to have a different placement on the back of the phone compared with the previous Note, but it'll probably get most or even all of the Galaxy S10's camera features. The news comes from Samsung insider Ice Universe, who said on Twitter that the Galaxy Note 10 will be Samsung's last "last 1/2.55-inch 1.4um CMOS flagship phone," which Samsung has been using for four years. The leaker also said the Galaxy S11 will get a new "large-size large-pixel CMOS."https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1133554761393795073According to the same leaker, the Galaxy Note 10 won't pack optical zoom capabilities similar to what you might find from the competition -- namely the Huawei P30 Pro. Samsung has tested 10x optical zoom on phones, but the components apparently require too much space inside the phone.https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1133553896499007488Samsung has created its own 5x optical zoom camera that will compete against the Huawei P30 Pro, but it'll launch it on new Galaxy A series mid-range phones at first, not the Note 10.https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/1133551214417698816Samsung will unveil the Note 10 phones in August, so there's plenty of time left to learn everything about their rear and front-facing cameras.

The Wayward Special Counsel

Posted: 31 May 2019 03:30 AM PDT

The Wayward Special CounselIn the end, by-the-book Robert Mueller departed wildly from the book.He invented an extraconstitutional legal standard for his obstruction investigation and acted, at best, in violation of the spirit of the special-counsel regulations. His departing act was a public statement meant to influence the public debate in a manner inappropriate for a prosecutor, in part because the long public report he wrote that was also inappropriate for a prosecutor lacked clarity. A hallmark of the Trump era is that the norm-defying president goads everyone appalled by him to violate norms. The former Marine and G-man Robert Mueller would seem least likely to fall prey to this dynamic, but here we are. First and foremost, Mueller ditched the presumption of innocence. In the normal course of things, all of us are considered innocent unless a jury finds us guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Mueller switched this around. Rather than finding conclusive evidence of Trump's guilt, he had to find conclusive evidence of his innocence. Since he didn't find this exculpatory evidence, Mueller deemed Trump "not exonerated."In surely one of the more gobsmacking utterances ever made by someone from a Justice Department podium, he said that "if we had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so."If this standard had been applied to any person other than Donald Trump, it would have been widely denounced, and the American Civil Liberties Union would be crusading against it.Naturally, Trump's critics immediately concluded from Mueller's statement that if Trump hadn't been found innocent, he must be guilty. The snarky headline on a New York magazine piece put it aptly enough: "Mueller: Trump is Not Not a Criminal." Well, you might say, of course Robert Mueller departed from standard operating procedure — he's a special counsel operating in novel circumstances that require novel approaches. But this is not his writ. A special counsel, under the regulations, has the "investigative and prosecutorial functions of any United States Attorney." He is supposed to "comply with the rules, regulations, procedures, practices and policies of the Department of Justice." One of those rules, set out by the department's Office of Legal Counsel, famously says that a sitting president can't be charged with a crime. Mueller explained in his public statement that this ruling led his office to conclude that it couldn't "reach a determination one way or the other about whether the president committed a crime." So, Mueller, by his own account, conducted a two-year investigation knowing from the beginning that he wouldn't make the either/or decision that prosecutors exist to make. Mueller offered several reasons for conducting an obstruction investigation anyway. One was to preserve evidence. But for what? The idea that a post-presidency Trump will get prosecuted as a private citizen for firing FBI Director James Comey is manifestly absurd. Another was that the president can be accused of wrongdoing in "a process other than the criminal justice system," i.e., impeachment by Congress. Here, Mueller is basically describing Volume 2 as an impeachment referral. But this isn't a purpose contemplated by the special-counsel regulations, which say that the special counsel "shall provide the Attorney General with a confidential report explaining the prosecution or declination decisions." They don't say a special counsel shall fail to reach a prosecution or declination decision, then write a long report for congressional consumption anyway, and additionally go out and make a public statement to catalyze congressional action. It should be up to Congress, not an inferior executive branch, to launch such an inquiry or not. Even more bizarrely, since Mueller considered Trump's public statements as potential obstruction, any objections by the president to this quasi-impeachment inquiry were more evidence of alleged wrongdoing. An institutionalist who lost his way, Mueller will be lionized for the duration since he's been so useful to Trump's opposition, but his performance won't age well — and shouldn't. © 2019 by King Features Syndicate

China Thinks Russia's New Stealth Fighter 'Trashes' the F-35

Posted: 30 May 2019 03:00 PM PDT

China Thinks Russia's New Stealth Fighter 'Trashes' the F-35The Su-57 completely 'trashes' the latest American fighters like the F-35—at least, according to Chinese media.Earlier this month, Chinese defense news outlet Mil.news.sina published an analytical piece on the state of Russia's arsenal. The article looked to the Su-57, Russia's upcoming fifth generation stealth fighter, as a case study in the failures and successes of Russia's ambitious, decades-long campaign to modernize its armed forces.Whereas other fifth-generation fighters—most prominently, the US F-35—are strategic weapons, the author argues that the Su-57 was designed for an entirely different purpose that makes sense within the broader context of Russian military doctrine: "The Russians have a very simple idea. Nuclear weapons will defend Russia against the aggression of great powers. Jet fighters, military vessels, and other tactical weapons will guarantee Russia's victory in small, local conflicts."This first appeared earlier in 2019.

Teacher writes 'WTF is this?' on child's homework

Teacher writes 'WTF is this?' on child's homeworkA teacher is being investigated after writing "WTF" on a student's homework. The science tutor penned the missive – text-slang for "what the f***?" – after apparently finding the pupil's science assignment somewhat underwhelming."WTF is this?" she wrote. "Absolutely no credit."But after the pupil's mother complained, the unnamed teacher – at Rutherford High School in Florida's Bay County – has been told the incident will be investigated."It wasn't anything about not getting the credit, it was more so the language…that was very inappropriate and not acceptable for a teacher whatsoever," said Melinda Smith, whose son received the unflattering feedback. "I think for sure she needs to be reprimanded. I believe that something should be placed in her file."Neither her son's name or age have been revealed.Rutherford High's principal, Coy Pilson, said the school was taking action."Once we were notified, I notified district officials and our HR has been involved and they're currently investigating the situation," he told regional TV station WJHG. He would not be drawn on what action may be taken but suggested the incident was out of character for the member of staff involved."She was apologetic and it was a mistake on her part," he said. "All of the teachers at Rutherford High School are caring, loving teachers and we're also human and so, we make mistakes."But we understand that we are called to a high professional standard and when we make mistakes, we try to correct those mistakes and move forward."

The surprising main reason 492 out of 500 people at one company chose iPhone over Android

Posted: 31 May 2019 06:36 AM PDT

The surprising main reason 492 out of 500 people at one company chose iPhone over AndroidThere are so many exciting new Android smartphones coming in 2019. In fact, several of the best ones have already been released. After two years with the same design, Samsung completely overhauled the Galaxy S10 series and gave it a new all-screen design with a hole-punch camera that people seem to love. Then the OnePlus 7 Pro came along with the first true all-screen design and a selfie camera that pops up out of the top of the phone only when you need it. Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg and there are even more exciting new Android phones set to be released over the course of the year, including the first crop of smartphones with OLED screens that actually fold so they can be made more compact.Meanwhile, on the other side of the fence, there's not really anything terribly exciting about Apple's upcoming new iPhone 11 series smartphones. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will feature upgraded triple-lens cameras, which is certainly nice considering how far Apple has fallen behind market leaders like Huawei and Google. Beyond that, however, we're looking at new iPhone 11 models that look just like iPhone XS models from last year and the iPhone X from two years ago. And yet... despite how boring Apple's 2019 iPhone upgrade is shaping up to be, the companies unreleased iPhone 11 series smartphones still garner so much more hype than Android rivals. There's just something about Apple's iPhones that people can't seem to stay away from, and people are constantly trying to figure out exactly what it is. There are undoubtedly plenty of different reasons people have for choosing an iPhone over Android smartphones, but a new informal survey that was recently conducted suggested that one of the biggest reasons is something you would probably never expect.A Redditor who goes by the name "jackharvest" posted earlier this week in the Android subreddit to share an interesting story. He works in IT at an unnamed company, and his team noticed something crazy: of the 500 employees at the company, only 8 of them chose to use an Android phone. Everyone else -- all 492 of them -- chose an iPhone over Android phones. The IT team was so intrigued that it decided to issue a survey to ask employees why they chose the iPhone over Android. According to the Redditor, more than half of the iPhone users at the company gave the same answer. Did they choose Apple's iPhone over an Android handset because the design and build quality are so much better? Was it because iPhones always outperform even the most powerful Android flagships in real-life speed tests? Or perhaps it was because they all prefer the simplicity and ease of use that iOS offers compared to Android.Nope, it wasn't any of that. It was because they didn't want to be "green bubbles," a reference to the fact that iMessage chats in the iPhone's Messages app use blue bubbles while SMS chats are displayed with green bubbles. Forget all of the great advantages iPhones might offer, iMessage is the main reason all these people wanted an iPhone. 98% of the employees at this company went with Apple over Android, and for the majority of them, it was mainly because of a single service. Now, commenters on Reddit were quick to point out that this phenomenon is unique to the United States and perhaps a handful of other regions, and they're correct. Cross-platform messaging apps from third-party app makers are popular in the US, but SMS and iMessage are still widely used. That's not the case in many other markets -- SMS has been almost completely abandoned in favor of messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and others. The US is one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world though, and it's pretty crazy to think that the desire to be a blue bubble is still such a huge deciding factor for people here. Meanwhile, Google continues to flounder in all of its attempts to produce a similar messaging service for Android with anywhere near the kind of lock-in we've seen with iMessage.

Los Angeles County sues Bayer's Monsanto over PCB contamination

Los Angeles County sues Bayer's Monsanto over PCB contaminationThe most populous U.S. county, which has about 10.1 million people, said the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in products sold by Monsanto many decades ago has caused widespread environmental contamination, forcing it to spend money to retrofit its stormwater systems and prevent further damage. Los Angeles County said Monsanto had long concealed its knowledge that PCBs were harmful, and created a public nuisance because their presence interferes with commerce, fishing, navigation, swimming and other water-based activities. In a statement, Bayer said it believed Los Angeles County's lawsuit had no merit, and that it would defend itself aggressively.

Google quietly ruined Chrome, and we almost missed it

Posted: 31 May 2019 02:20 PM PDT

Google quietly ruined Chrome, and we almost missed itGoogle's Chrome is the most popular way to browse the web on desktop and mobile, thanks to a combination of features that make it a reliable, albeit sometimes resource-intensive, app. However, Google's recent moves are going to ruin the Chrome experience for many users, and we nearly missed them.Google a few months ago announced a proposal to change the way Chrome extensions work, which would prevent current ad blockers from working. Google received plenty of negative feedback from users, but this hasn't deterred the company from going forward with these plans.Google a few days ago responded to some of the criticism (via 9to5Google) regarding its Manifest V3 changes, explaining what will change going forward. The company confirmed that the ad blocking capabilities of Chrome would no longer be available to regular Chrome users. Chrome will still block content if you're a paid, enterprise user of Chrome.A Google's spokesperson told 9to5Google that "Chrome supports the use and development of ad blockers," adding that Google is "actively working with the developer community to get feedback and iterate on the design of a privacy-preserving content filtering system that limits the amount of sensitive browser data shared with third parties."However, as the blog points out, the Chrome changes will make it impossible for most Chrome ad blockers to work in the near future. Google's moves aren't surprising, considering that it makes money from advertising. Alphabet noted in a recent SEC Form 10-K filing that ad blocking extensions are a "risk factor" to revenue:> New and existing technologies could affect our ability to customize ads and/or could block ads online, which would harm our business.> > Technologies have been developed to make customizable ads more difficult or to block the display of ads altogether, and some providers of online services have integrated technologies that could potentially impair the core functionality of third-party digital advertising. Most of our Google revenues are derived from fees paid to us in connection with the display of ads online. As a result, such technologies and tools could adversely affect our operating results. What's also interesting is that Google made it clear during I/O 2019 that it wants to offer better privacy and security to users, something that seemed to go against its bottom line. Google tried to redefine privacy to suit it needs around that time. The fact that it's trying to protect the customizable ads that it sells to businesses is also an indication that Google won't give up collecting user data anytime soon.In Google's defense, we'll remind you the company is looking to improve the advertising experience on the web, and prevent the kind of annoying ads that you'd use ad blockers to stop from appearing in the first place. Also, in the same response, Google said that future versions of Chrome will make it easier for end-users to deal with permissions that extensions require and force developers to inform end-users of what data their extensions will access. The move is meant to protect privacy and prevent abuse, which is certainly laudable. Meghan McCain: I Didn’t ‘Literally’ Mean Democrats Should Shoot Trump—It Was ‘Metaphorical’

Meghan McCain: I Didn't 'Literally' Mean Democrats Should Shoot Trump—It Was 'Metaphorical'Meghan McCain found herself in a precarious situation during Friday's broadcast of The View when she went a bit too far with a metaphor about impeachment, prompting her and the rest of the crew to quickly walk back her comments.Discussing President Trump recently declaring that impeachment is a "dirty, filthy, disgusting word" as pressure ramps up in the wake of Robert Mueller's public comments, McCain noted that House Democrats are still being careful as the public hasn't embraced the idea yet."What's interesting is that only 45 House members are for impeachment proceedings, which actually surprised me," she said. "It's only 20 percent of House Democrats. Ten percent of the entire House and I do think, I agree with you, that Nancy Pelosi is an incredibly shrewd politician. Sixty-five percent of Americans say Congress should not begin proceedings at the moment."The conservative host then stated Democrats need to make sure they don't miss if they go down the impeachment path—using a rather graphic analogy."I will say if you take this kill shot, Democrats, you better not miss," McCain declared. "You better hit his jugular. If there is a finger still moving at the end of it, you will ruin your chances in 2020 but you better do this well if you're going to do it."Almost immediately, co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected, letting viewers know that McCain "doesn't mean" that Democrats need to actually shoot the president."I don't mean literally!" McCain exclaimed. "I'm so sorry!"She continued: "Oh my God! I mean like a metaphorical. I'm a hunter and shooter, I'm sorry about my metaphors. And I talk like a redneck, so sorry."Liberal co-host and frequent McCain sparring partner Joy Behar stepped in to provide a better metaphor, telling the former Fox News personality to say "if you're going to swing, you better hit the ball.""Thank you, Joy, for giving a better metaphor," an appreciative McCain responded. Thank you very much!"Goldberg, meanwhile, ended the segment by offering additional cover to McCain while claiming the panel's comments are constantly dissected and parsed."So here's the thing, people come after us for what we say and how we say it because they're listening for something to be wrong in their mind," she asserted. "We try not to do that so we look out for each other because we know because we all see what people write to us.""I appreciated it," McCain concluded. "Live TV. Sorry."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast hereGet our top stories in your inbox every day.
