Judge says government's suit over Bolton book can proceed Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:56 AM PDT The Trump administration can move forward with its lawsuit against former national security adviser John Bolton over his tell-all book, a judge ruled Thursday in denying a request to dismiss the complaint. The Justice Department alleges that Bolton's book, "The Room Where It Happened," contains classified information, and the government sued in June to try to prevent the release. |

UK university students' first lesson: coping with COVID Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:54 AM PDT For thousands of new students in Britain, their first weeks of university have been all too similar to their final weeks of school, marked by lockdowns, isolation and staring at a screen. COVID-19 outbreaks have hit nearly 50 universities in the last few weeks, forcing students to self-isolate in halls of residence just days after their arrival. Unions said ministers had failed to plan for what they said was an inevitable rise in cases as large numbers of students come together in halls, lectures and seminars. |

Jack Burkman, Jacob Wohl Charged in Alleged Voter Suppression Scheme Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:23 PM PDT Conservative operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman were charged on Thursday for allegedly orchestrating a series of robocalls aimed at suppressing the vote in the November presidential election, Michigan authorities said. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a slew of charges against Burkman, 54, and Wohl, 22, including conspiracy to commit an election law violation and using a computer to commit the crime of election law - intimidating voters. Prosecutors allege the two political operatives were using a robocall system aimed at scaring Detroit voters away from using mail-in voting ballots. The calls, which were made in August, went out to nearly 12,000 Detroit residents. Both Wohl and Burkman face four felony counts and a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison. The voice on the call attributed to Wohl and Burkman attempts to trick listeners into not sending in mail-in ballots, falsely warning that the information would be used to track fugitives, collect on credit card debts, and enforce "mandatory vaccines." The calls also told residents to "beware of vote by mail.""Don't be BS'ed into giving your private information to the man," the call continued. "Stay safe and beware of vote-by-mail." Wohl and Burkman didn't respond to immediate requests for comment. In August, Burkman denied being behind the robocall, claiming it was suspicious that it was connected to his personal cell phone number."No one in their right mind would put their own cell on a robocall," Burkman told The Daily Beast.Sealed Docs: FBI Investigating Jacob Wohl Over Roger Stone Trial Leaks"Any effort to interfere with, intimidate or intentionally mislead Michigan voters will be met with swift and severe consequences," Nessel said. "This effort specifically targeted minority voters in an attempt to deter them from voting in the November election. We're all well aware of the frustrations caused by the millions of nuisance robocalls flooding our cell phones and landlines each day, but this particular message poses grave consequences for our democracy and the principles upon which it was built. Michigan voters are entitled to a full, free and fair election in November and my office will not hesitate to pursue those who jeopardize that."The attorney general's office added that during the investigation into the robocalls, investigators communicated with officials in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois—all of whom reported similar robocalls being made to residents in their states. All the calls, they said, were made to residents in "urban areas with significant minority populations," the Michigan attorney general's office said."It's believed around 85,000 calls were made nationally, though an exact breakdown of the numbers of calls to each city or state are not available," the AG's office said. Nessel also encouraged anyone who received such a robocall to file a complaint with her office. The Michigan charges aren't the only legal charges facing the pair. Wohl has been charged with two felonies over alleged violations of California securities law. On Saturday, The Daily Beast reported on a secret FBI investigation into Wohl and Burkman over the leak of confidential juror questionnaires and grand jury testimony in the trial of Trump associate Roger Stone.Wohl and Burkman became notorious online in 2018, after a failed attempt to manufacture a sexual assault allegation against Robert Mueller collapsed in spectacular fashion. Since then, they have tried to create hoaxes against other Trump opponents, but the schemes always fail almost immediately, often due to Wohl and Burkman's own errors. The duo have not yet been arrested, according to a press release from the Michigan attorney general. But the release noted that the agency will work with "local enforcement" if the two don't turn themselves in.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Kuwaitis await new crown prince as Arab leaders mourn late emir Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:10 AM PDT Arab leaders headed to Kuwait on Thursday to offer condolences for the death of its ruler Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad, who worked to unify a polarised region, as Kuwaitis waited for the new emir to name a crown prince to help guide state affairs. Jordan's king, the presidents of Egypt and former occupier Iraq, and Oman's sultan were among those paying respects to Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, the brother and successor of Sheikh Sabah, who died on Tuesday aged 91. Gulf power Saudi Arabia, with which Kuwait has its closest but most complex relationship, was represented by Mansour bin Mutib, an adviser to King Salman, who had surgery in July and whose son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is de facto ruler. |

More fire crews and equipment were deployed in and around Calistoga, a town of 5,000 people known for hot springs, mud baths and wineries in the hills of Napa County about 70 miles (110 kilometers) north of San Francisco. Pompeo meets Vatican officials amid tension over China Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:30 AM PDT Pompeo, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Callista Gingrich, met Parolin and the Vatican's Foreign Minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher. The Vatican's two top diplomatic officials have accused him of trying to drag the Catholic Church into the U.S. presidential election by denouncing its relations with China. The remarks came after Pompeo accused the Church in an article and a series of tweets this month of putting its "moral authority" at risk by renewing an agreement with China over the appointment of bishops. Parolin and Gallagher said that Pope Francis had declined a request from Pompeo for an audience, as the pope avoids meeting politicians ahead of elections. |

New Caledonia to vote on independence from France Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:50 AM PDT Voters in New Caledonia, a French archipelago in the South Pacific, will choose whether they want independence from France in a referendum that marks a milestone in a three-decade decolonization effort. Sunday's vote is key to determining the future of the archipelago east of Australia and its 270,000 inhabitants, including both native Kanaks, who once suffered from strict segregation policies, and descendants of European colonizers. No opinion polls have been released, but two years ago, 56.4% of voters who participated in a similar referendum chose to keep ties with Paris — 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) and nine times zones away — instead of backing independence. |

On the same day, the court sentenced a 13-year-old boy, Omar Farouq, to 10 years in prison, also for blasphemy. The sentences caused an international outcry and sparked a broader debate in Nigeria about the role of Islamic law in a country roughly evenly split between a predominantly Muslim north and mainly Christian south. |

Las Vegas marks 3rd year since deadliest US mass shooting Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:14 AM PDT The sun rose Thursday over a somber ceremony marking the third anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, as Las Vegas remembered the excruciating night when 58 people were killed at an outdoor country music festival in 2017. "Three years ago today, a heinous act of violence rained down on our city, our county and our state," Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak told a modest gathering at an open-air amphitheater at the Clark County Government Center. "Victim families will forever be in our hearts from 1 October," he said, "and we will never, never forget what happened that day or the lives that were lost and the lives that were changed." |

Police say they banged on Breonna Taylor's door 30 to 90 seconds: recordings Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:36 AM PDT The new details from the police officers who raided Taylor's Louisville apartment contrast with earlier witness reports and has been a point of contention in the case that has captured national attention and prompted street protests over racism and police use of force. Kentucky's attorney general on Friday released audio recordings of the grand jury proceedings that cleared three policemen of homicide charges in Taylor's death, offering a rare peek at the inner workings of a grand jury, which is normally kept secret. The grand jury last week cleared the two white officers who shot Taylor and charged a third with wanton endangerment for stray bullets that hit a neighboring apartment in the March 13 raid. |
