House passes $10.9B transportation funding extension Posted: 15 Jul 2014 03:12 PM PDT The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a $10.9 billion extension of U.S. transportation funding through May 2015, a measure aimed at averting cutbacks in August in federal money for road, bridge and transit projects. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that "as soon as I can get to it," the Senate would begin considering a similar, $10.8 billion measure with some alternate funding provisions in the coming days. Without new money for the Highway Trust Fund, the Department of Transportation has said it will start to cut back federal funding for projects by nearly a third starting on Aug. 1, the same day Congress begins a five-week summer recess. "If Congress fails to act, thousands of transportation projects across the country and hundreds of thousands of construction jobs will be at risk," said House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster, a Pennsylvania Republican. |
California family rescued at sea sues phone company Posted: 15 Jul 2014 02:34 PM PDT A U.S. woman rescued with her family from a Pacific Ocean sailboat after her infant daughter became ill has filed suit against her satellite phone company for cutting off service, a move she said led the family to seek an emergency rescue and ultimately to scuttle their boat, her lawyers said on Tuesday. The complaint filed in San Diego Superior Court by Charlotte Kaufman on Monday alleges that Whenever Communications LLC deactivated the family's satellite phone's SIM card even though the family's $240 a month bill had been paid in full since August 2012. |

Adnan Rashid, who was captured on Friday in South Waziristan in northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border, is the first well-known Taliban commander taken since the military launched an offensive in neighbouring North Waziristan last month. He was injured in a shootout during his capture in a house where he was living with his family in the Wana area of South Waziristan, the officials said. The Pakistan army has said it will drive Taliban insurgents from their key strongholds in the region and indicated on Tuesday that it would expand its offensive into the Bajaur tribal region, further north. |

Good with garlic? 2-pound African stucco-eating snails seized at LAX Posted: 15 Jul 2014 05:01 AM PDT By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. customs inspectors at Los Angeles International Airport seized a shipment of several dozen live giant African snails, considered a delicacy in Nigeria but also voracious pests that can eat paint and stucco off houses, officials said on Monday. The mollusks appeared to be packaged as a personal shipment and were marked as destined for an address in San Dimas, California, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Los Angeles, agency spokeswoman Lee Harty said. According to Customs and Border Protection, the giant snails can consume more than 500 types of plants, and will even munch on the exterior of homes if fruits and vegetables are not available. Experts identified the creatures as belonging to the giant African snail species, known by the scientific name Archachatina marginata. |
