Obama: Congress can act now to fix border crisis Posted: 09 Jul 2014 04:32 PM PDT Sitting down with one of his harshest critics, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he was open to all of Gov. Rick Perry's suggestions for addressing the wave of unaccompanied minors coming over the border from Mexico, urging Congress to approve his request for more funding so that those and other ideas can be put in place. |

Joni Ernst: Boehner should pursue Obama impeachment if he has evidence Posted: 09 Jul 2014 12:52 PM PDT Iowa Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst waded back into controversial waters in June when, during a conversation with a conservative radio host, she again discussed impeaching President Barack Obama. In January, Ernst had suggested that "impeachment" should be on the table if the Supreme Court decided against Obama on the question of recess appointments, which it later did. But Ernst walked back her comments on Tuesday after they were reported by Yahoo News and other media outlets, saying she herself was not calling for the second-term president to be removed from office over his power struggle with the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Now it turns out that impeachment is something Ernst also discussed on a June 27 episode of the "Simon Conway Show." Her remarks on the conservative talk radio program, taped in Des Moines, showcase the tightrope Republican candidates can be forced walk on conservative programs directed at their voter base. Issues seen as far outside the political mainstream, such as impeachment, can quickly become the hot topics of the day in highly charged partisan environments, opening up candidates to awkward and potentially problematic lines of questioning. |

Barnes & Noble takes breastfeeding-friendly approach after complaint Posted: 09 Jul 2014 11:24 AM PDT Bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Inc has pledged to make its stores friendly to nursing mothers as part of a settlement with New York State after a woman who was breastfeeding was asked to cover herself or leave one of its locations. The agreement, announced by New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, called for Barnes & Noble to educate its employees about the chain's own policies on public breast-feeding and to strengthen customer complaint procedures. The settlement followed a complaint by Shereen Matera of Oakland, New Jersey, who said she was breastfeeding her infant son in the children's section of a Barnes & Noble store in Nanuet, New York when an assistant manager asked that she cover her breasts. "We've provided safe environments for women to breastfeed since we opened our first store," a representative for Barnes & Noble, which also issued her a $50 gift card, said. |

No more naked Apollos on Russian banknotes, lawmaker says Posted: 09 Jul 2014 07:59 AM PDT Naked images of the Greek God Apollo have graced buildings and paintings for centuries, but his disrobed body has so shocked one Russian lawmaker that he wants to change the country's 100-ruble banknote. The note, worth less than $3, depicts an image of a statue of Apollo riding a four-horse chariot atop the Bolshoi Theater, one of Russia's main cultural symbols. "You can see clearly that Apollo is naked, you can see his genitalia," Roman Khudyakov, a member of parliament for the nationalist LDPR party, told Reuters Television. I was shocked, you know." The call coincides with growing conservatism in President Vladimir Putin's third term, during which he has courted the Russian Orthodox Church. |

Joni Ernst: Is Obama impeachment on the table or not? Posted: 08 Jul 2014 06:57 PM PDT Iowa Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst attempted Tuesday night to walk back statements made at a January event in which she said President Barack Obama had "become a dictator" who should be "removed from office" or face "impeachment." In a statement provided to Yahoo News, reacting to a story published earlier Tuesday, Ernst said she does not believe that Obama is a dictator but rather that "his repeated use of unilateral action sure makes him look like one." "To be clear, I have not seen any evidence that the President should be impeached," the statement read. |
