GM ignition-switch fund receives claims for more than 100 deaths Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:55 PM PDT By Jessica Dye NEW YORK (Reuters) - A program to compensate victims of crashes linked to a faulty ignition switch in General Motors vehicles has received claims for 107 deaths as of Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for the lawyer overseeing the program. Amy Weiss, a spokeswoman for Kenneth Feinberg, told Reuters that the 107 deaths were among 309 claims that have been submitted so far. Before a claim is deemed eligible, it will be evaluated by Feinberg and his staff to determine whether the ignition switch was in fact responsible for causing a serious physical injury or death. The number of death claims submitted already far exceeds the 13 deaths that GM has officially attributed to the switch, which prompted the recall of 2.6 million vehicles earlier this year. |

Hurricane Cristobal moving away from U.S., but rip currents likely Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:49 PM PDT Hurricane Cristobal continued to turn to the northeast on Tuesday, moving away from the Bahamas and the United States coast but is still likely to stir up dangerous coastal conditions, the National Hurricane Center said. Centered about 460 miles (740 km) southwest of Bermuda, Cristobal had picked up speed to 15 mph (24 kph) with winds of 75 miles per hour (120 km per hour), the NHC added. The center of Cristobal is expected to pass northwest of Bermuda on Wednesday, causing tropical storm conditions on the British territory about 640 miles (1,030 km) off the coast of North Carolina. "Swells generated by Cristobal are affecting portions of the United States east coast from central Florida northward to North Carolina ... and will spread northward later this week," the Miami-based forecast office warned, adding that life-threatening surf and rip current conditions were likely. |

Netflix opposes Comcast-TWC merger in gigantic 256-page FCC petition Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:45 PM PDT Netflix has filed a 256-page petition with the FCC asking the regulator to deny the proposed Comcast-Time Warner Cable because it would cause "serious public interest harm." FROM EARLIER: Netflix rails against ISPs even as it agrees to pay off yet another one for better connections Netflix has defended Net Neutrality numerous times before, all the while having to ink interconnect deals with four major ISPs (including Comcast and TWC) to ensure its customers get an enjoyable movie streaming experience. In its lengthy FCC petition, Netflix explains that a Comcast-TWC giant would have huge leverage over Netflix, Hulu and other competing providers, as it would not only be in a position to charge these services fees for faster service, but also provide competing video-on-demand services |
Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:45 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here," is the inscription uncovered by a gang of 20-something treasure hunters in the catacomb-hopping horror flick, "As Above, So Below." But the warning could easily apply to viewers checking out this rather hopeless mash-up of "The Descent" and "(Rec)," not to mention a dozen other found-footage movies that have clogged the screens over the last five years. |
Miley Cyrus' MTV awards date wanted on probation violation Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:45 PM PDT The young homeless man who accepted Miley Cyrus' MTV Music Video Award has a warrant for his arrest in Oregon on a probation violation, his probation officer said on Tuesday. Lee Warren, the Polk County probation officer of 22-year-old Jesse Helt, said local authorities were unsuccessful in finding Helt in Salem, Oregon after his mother told the Oregonian newspaper that Cyrus had given him money to fly home. Cyrus, 21, opted not to collect the video of the year award on Sunday for her hit "Wrecking Ball" and instead sent Helt in her place as a way to draw awareness to youth homelessness. |
Ex-Virginia governor spars with prosecutor in corruption trial Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:43 PM PDT By Gary Robertson RICHMOND Va. (Reuters) - Former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell said on Tuesday a federal prosecutor was "completely off base" to suggest that he had provided help to a dietary supplement businessman in exchange for loans. In a heated fifth day on the witness stand in his federal corruption trial, McDonnell said there was no link between $50,000 in loans to a realty company McDonnell was a partner in and help he may have given the entrepreneur, Jonnie Williams Sr. "You're completely off base," McDonnell, a Republican whose four-year term ended in January, told Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Dry during the second day of his cross-examination in a packed U.S. |
Detroit's $1.8 billion refunding bonds priced in muni market Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:41 PM PDT (Reuters) - Detroit completed the pricing on Tuesday of $1.8 billion of water and sewer refinancing bonds related to a tender offer aimed at dealing with a big chunk of the bankrupt city's debt. A day after receiving approval from a federal judge overseeing its historic bankruptcy case, Detroit offered the bonds in the U.S. Underwriters led by Citigroup priced $937 million of sewage disposal system senior lien bonds with a top yield of 5.10 percent for term bonds subject to the alternative minimum tax and due in 2044. Herd mentality: 'Sheepdog mystery' solved at last Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:40 PM PDT There is the riddle of the Bermuda Triangle. The answer, revealed on Tuesday in a journal published by Britain's prestigious Royal Society, is that sheepdogs cleverly follow a simple rulebook. Researchers fitted highly accurate GPS tracking devices into backpacks that were then placed on a trained Australian Kelpie sheepdog and on a flock of 46 female merino sheep in a five-hectare (12-acre) field. "It basically sees white, fluffy things in front of it," said Andrew King of Swansea University in Wales. |

Spider Personalities Shine Among Friends Posted: 26 Aug 2014 04:33 PM PDT Results showed that social interactions can shape an animal's personality, said study leader Andreas Modlmeier, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. The study builds on a theory of animal behavior known as "social niche specialization." The idea is that within social groups, individuals have to stand out from each other, and will thus develop distinct personalities — defined, in this case, as differences in behavior. These spiders live together in communally built webs of up to 2,000 individuals, Modlmeier said. |

Sanctions-hit Russian economy nears recession Posted: 26 Aug 2014 08:54 AM PDT The Russian economy is nearing recession, officials said Tuesday, with punishing Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict set to keep growth at ultra-low levels and drive up inflation. "The economy is close to recession," said Oleg Zasov, the head of forecasting at the economy ministry, according to Russian news agencies. Russia's statistics office reported earlier this month that the economy grew by 0.8 percent in the second quarter on an annual comparison. Seasonally-adjusted quarterly data has yet to be released, which could show that Russia entered a technical recession as the economy contracted by 0.5 percent in the first three months of the year. |

Lawyer: Audio shows gap in firing when Michael Brown was shot Posted: 26 Aug 2014 10:48 AM PDT A previously undisclosed sound recording captured the shooting of Michael Brown by a white police officer, CNN reported Tuesday, as it broadcast what it said appeared to be audio from the gunfire that killed the unarmed black teen. The man was said to have been recording a Skype conversation at the same time as the deadly encounter nearby between Brown and the police officer, CNN said. The man who made the recording wishes to remain anonymous, said his lawyer Lopa Blumenthal, who said it could have "huge relevance" in the case -- particularly the pause in the shooting. A grand jury is hearing evidence to determine whether police officer Darren Wilson, 28, used excessive force in fatally shooing Brown, who autopsies found had been shot six times. |
