UN warns Yemen 'collapsing' as Qaeda seizes army camp Posted: 12 Feb 2015 11:23 AM PST UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned Thursday that Yemen was falling apart and called for action to avert chaos, as Al-Qaeda fighters overran an army camp and seized heavy weaponry. The UN chief was reporting to the 15-member council after talks with Gulf officials that he said concentrated on "preventing civil war in Yemen". "Let me be clear: Yemen is collapsing before our eyes. Long on the front line of the war against Al-Qaeda, Yemen has descended into chaos since Shiite militiamen, known as Huthis, seized Sanaa in September and ousted the government last week. |

Matt Bai: The always amusing Brian Williams Posted: 12 Feb 2015 03:04 AM PST What resonates in the case of Brian Williams, who was suspended by NBC for six months, is the collision of celebrity, politics and media that first occurred with Gary Hart in 1987. Nearly three decades later, TV news and entertainment are almost impossible to separate, and probably no one has embodied that cultural shift more comfortably than Williams. |

Alabama official ordered to issue marriage licenses to gay couples Posted: 12 Feb 2015 03:40 PM PST By Jonathan Kaminsky MOBILE, Ala. (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday ordered an Alabama official to comply with her earlier ruling striking down the state's ban on same-sex matrimony and start issuing marriage licenses to gay couples, while advocates said couples in most counties were still unable to obtain licenses. U.S. District Judge Callie Granade's order clarified that Mobile County Probate Court Judge Don Davis should follow her directive despite a contravening order from Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore that led many state judges to refrain from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. The ruling marked the latest twist in the controversy over gay marriage in Alabama, where probate judges have faced conflicting orders from federal and state courts. |
Oklahoma bill would protect clergy who won't perform gay marriages Posted: 12 Feb 2015 03:07 PM PST (Reuters) - Oklahoma state representatives voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to advance a bill that would provide immunity from lawsuits to clergy who refuse to conduct marriages for same-sex couples. The bill, approved by 88-7 in the state House of Representatives, would protect clergy members from any civil claim or cause of action if they refuse to preside over or recognize a marriage of same-sex couples because of their conscience or religious beliefs. The measure next goes to the state Senate for consideration. The bill's sponsor, Republican Representative David Brumbaugh, said many pastors asked for the legislation after a federal judge overturned Oklahoma's ban on gay marriage in January 2014. |
Montana lawmakers shelve indecent exposure bill amid bias charges Posted: 12 Feb 2015 04:25 PM PST Montana lawmakers have shelved a bill that would have broadened the definition of what constitutes indecent exposure, but which opponents said could be used to target women wearing revealing tops or form-fitting garments like yoga pants. The Republican lawmaker who crafted the legislation said it was designed to outlaw events such as an organized bike ride last fall near the University of Montana campus in Missoula that saw naked men and women cycling on city streets. Montana Representative David Moore said he was among local residents who were offended by the "Dare to be Bare" event. |

San Francisco commuters possibly exposed to measles on train Posted: 11 Feb 2015 09:27 PM PST By Robin Respaut SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of commuters on San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit system may have been exposed to measles after an infectious Bay Area resident rode a train to and from work for three days last week, public health officials said on Wednesday. The rider represents the first case of measles confirmed by Contra Costa County health officials during an outbreak of the disease that began in late December. "Although the risk of contracting measles by being exposed on BART is low, Bay Area residents should be aware of the situation," the county public health department said in a statement. The California Department of Public Health said on Wednesday that 110 cases of measles had been confirmed in California, many of them linked to the outbreak that authorities believe began when an infected person from out of the country visited Disneyland in late December. |
