"I couldn't hear myself scream," Haslet-Davis on Wednesday told the jurors who will determine if convicted bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is sentenced to death or life in prison. "I thought that because I couldn't hear myself scream, I was dead." Federal prosecutors called a series of witnesses who described what they lost when the 21-year-old ethnic Chechen and his brother set off a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs at the race's crowded finish line on April 15, 2013. Haslet-Davis, 34, was among them.

In his opening statement, Hinckley's lawyer Barry Levine requested he be granted convalescent leave, the equivalent of outpatient status, so he could live full time with his 89-year-old mother. "There is no dispute that Mr. Hinckley is clinically ready for the next step in treatment, which is convalescent leave," Levine told U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman. The government opposed Levine's request, with prosecutor Colleen Kennedy saying the provisions suggested for expanded release were inadequate for a would-be presidential assassin.

Pedro Hernandez, 54, is on trial in the killing of Patz, whose disappearance from his New York City neighborhood nearly 36 years ago changed the way U.S. authorities respond to reports of missing or abducted children. During the deliberations in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, the jurors asked Judge Maxwell Wiley for a list of all the witnesses and exhibits from the three months of testimony in the trial. One the earliest was the boy's mother, Julie Patz, who took the stand in January.
