Boston bomber told nun 'no one' should suffer as his victims did Posted: 11 May 2015 11:52 AM PDT By Scott Malone and Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - Lawyers for the Boston Marathon bomber on Monday wrapped up the case to spare Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's life with testimony from a Roman Catholic nun and death-penalty opponent who said Tsarnaev told her "no one deserves to suffer" as his victims had. Since testimony began in Boston federal court in early March, the jury has heard from about 150 witness, including parents who lost children in the attack, first responders who attended to victims who had lost limbs, and Tsarnaev's Russian relatives who remembered him as a loving young boy. |
Texas, Arkansas tornadoes kill at least 4, shatter homes Posted: 11 May 2015 01:44 PM PDT By Lisa Maria Garza and Steve Barnes VAN, Texas/LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) - Emergency crews were cleaning up on Monday from tornadoes that killed at least four people and injured 50 others in Texas and Arkansas that were part of a twister series to hit central states overnight, flattening buildings and snapping power lines. A husband and wife were killed near a trailer park in Van, Texas, about 70 miles (115 km) southeast of Dallas, a town of about 2,500 people where scores of homes were reduced to splinters. The National Weather Service said an EF3 tornado packing winds of around 140 mph (225 kph) hit the town. Near the west Arkansas town of Nashville, a baby girl about 18 months old was pulled from the wreckage of a mobile home where her parents died in a tornado there. |
NFL suspends Brady four games for 'Deflategate,' fines Patriots Posted: 11 May 2015 04:41 PM PDT The National Football League came down hard on the New England Patriots on Monday for their role in Deflategate, suspending star quarterback Tom Brady for the first four games of next season and fining the franchise $1 million. The NFL also said the Patriots will forfeit their first-round selection in the 2016 draft and a fourth-round pick in 2017 for using under-inflated footballs in last season's AFC Championship game. Ted Wells, an attorney hired by the NFL to investigate the allegations, said in a 243-page report that it was "more probable than not" that Patriots personnel "were involved in a deliberate effort" to circumvent rules by using deflated footballs in the team's 45-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship game. |
