Hundreds mourn for woman found dead in Texas jail cell Posted: 25 Jul 2015 01:46 PM PDT By Mike Lansu LISLE, Ill. (Reuters) - Hundreds of people on Saturday attended the funeral of Sandra Bland, a black woman found dead in a Texas jail cell days after she was arrested following a minor traffic offense, an incident said by activists to be yet another example of police brutality toward minorities. "This is not a moment of defeat, this is an hour of victory ... We are not funeralizing a martyr or a victim, we are celebrating a hero," said Reverend James Miller, who led the funeral service. Bland, 28, was pulled over by a white Texas state trooper on July 10 near Prairie View, Texas, northwest of Houston, for failing to signal a lane change. |

Exclusive: AFL-CIO may delay endorsement of Clinton as 2016 presidential candidate - sources Posted: 25 Jul 2015 12:45 PM PDT In a possible setback for Hillary Clinton, the AFL-CIO's political committee has recommended the nation's largest labor union federation delay endorsing a candidate for the 2016 presidential race as it seeks to push her to be more supportive of its policies on issues such as trade and wages. The move highlights the pressures Clinton is facing to take a tough stand against the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a proposed free trade deal backed by President Barack Obama but vigorously opposed by unions who see it as detrimental to jobs and wages in the U.S. Unions also want her to back labor-friendly policies on other issues, such as the minimum wage and the Federal Reserve. |

Federal judge orders information be seized from Arizona sheriff Posted: 24 Jul 2015 07:59 PM PDT A federal judge on Friday ordered U.S. marshals to seize documents from the office of controversial Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio as part of an ongoing racial profiling case. U.S. District Judge Murray Snow issued the order at an emergency hearing he convened after a court-appointed monitor reported that the sheriff's office had failed to turn over information being sought in connection with the case. In a brief order, Snow required that 1,459 identifications apparently taken from people by sheriff's deputies during law enforcement actions and which were about to be destroyed be produced for federal marshals. |
