Groups sue UC Berkeley over Ann Coulter appearance Posted: 24 Apr 2017 05:31 PM PDT Two conservative groups filed a lawsuit against the University of California at Berkeley claiming that a decision to cancel an appearance by the firebrand pundit Ann Coulter violated their right to free speech. The Berkeley College Republicans and Young America's Foundation, which had invited Coulter to speak on April 27, accused the university of seeking to silence conservative viewpoints and stifle political discourse at the famously progressive campus by imposing unreasonable demands on campus events involving certain "high-profile" speakers. "Defendants' discriminatory imposition of curfew and venue restrictions has resulted in the cancellation of two speaking engagements featuring prominent conservative speakers in the month of April, 2017," read the lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco. |

North Korea stages large-scale artillery drill as U.S. submarine docks in South Posted: 25 Apr 2017 02:03 AM PDT By Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea conducted a big live-fire exercise on Tuesday to mark the foundation of its military as a U.S. submarine docked in South Korea in a show of force amid growing concern over the North's nuclear and missile programs. The port call by the USS Michigan came as a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group steamed toward Korean waters and as top envoys for North Korea policy from South Korea, Japan and the United States met in Tokyo. |

US sends stealth fighters to Russia's backyard for NATO drills Posted: 25 Apr 2017 10:53 AM PDT The move was seen by Estonian defence officials as a gesture underscoring Washington's commitment to its NATO partners. Rhetoric by US President Donald Trump, who called NATO "obsolete" shortly before he took office, deeply rattled the alliance's easternmost members bordering Russia. Trump has since reversed much of his criticism. |

Iraqi forces using siege and stealth to evict Islamic State from Mosul Posted: 24 Apr 2017 11:54 PM PDT By Ahmed Aboulenein MOSUL, Iraq, (Reuters) - Iraqi forces are using siege and stealth tactics to drive Islamic State militants out of Mosul's Old City, an Iraqi general said, as his forces sought to minimize casualties among hundreds of thousands of people trapped in the cramped, historic neighborhood. Explosions from two car bombs could be heard nearby as Lieutenant General Abdul Ghani al-Assadi spoke to Reuters at his command post on Monday, and a Reuters correspondent saw thick smoke rising from the blasts. "Most houses in the Old City are very old and its streets and alleyways are very narrow," said Assadi, a commander of Iraqi counter-terrorism units in Mosul. |
Arkansas kills inmate in latest of several planned executions Posted: 24 Apr 2017 06:33 PM PDT The southern US state of Arkansas, rushing to execute several inmates before a lethal drug expires at the end of the month, has carried out the first of two executions scheduled for Monday, the attorney general said. Jack Jones was executed after the US Supreme Court rejected an 11th-hour request from his attorneys asking the justices to reconsider a procedural issue from his trial. Arkansas had planned to put eight convicted murderers to death in 11 days -- a record, had it been carried out -- but four have won reprieves. |

Does Donald Trump actually know where Mars is? Posted: 24 Apr 2017 12:34 PM PDT Earlier today, President Trump took time out of his busy schedule to video-call the American astronauts aboard the International Space Station. In between comments on how great American technology is, Trump seems to have let slip his administration's Mars policy. According to the pool report of the conversation, it's kinda ambitious:
To be clear: Trump wants, "at worst," to have humans on Mars by 2024. That's an improvement of decades on NASA's current plan, which has the first Mars fly-by pencilled in for 2033, and no real plan for a human landing on Mars any time soon. That plan also assumes that NASA's budget remains intact and American scientific institutions aren't gutted, which is far from certain right now. More importantly, this raises the question of whether Trump actually knows where Mars is. It's quite possible that he's talking about getting humans to the Moon again, rather than Mars. His administration has said before that it'd like to see human space exploration (outside of the ISS) by the end of Trump's first term, which agrees with what Trump said about getting folks to the Moon/Mars "at worst, during my second term." Now we're left to wonder which is more likely: a President who thinks it's realistic to shave 20 years off the Martian exploration program, or one that confuses different celestial bodies. If the Earth can make it to 2024 intact, I guess we'll find out. |

Russia flies multiple bomber missions near Alaska: Pentagon Posted: 24 Apr 2017 01:20 PM PDT Russian warplanes last week flew a series of missions near Alaska, prompting the North American air defense agency to scramble US and Canadian jets, officials said Monday. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the Pentagon said Tu-95 Bear bombers were spotted in international air space on three occasions -- twice near the Aleutian Islands and once near mainland Alaska and Canada. The bomber missions occurred April 17, 18 and 20, and on two occasions NORAD launched fighters to conduct "safe and professional" intercepts. |

Arctic thaw quickening threatens trillion-dollar costs: report Posted: 25 Apr 2017 06:56 AM PDT (The online version of the April 24 story is refiled to fix byline, and typo in 12th paragraph) By Alister Doyle OSLO, April 25 (Reuters) - The Arctic's quickening thaw is melting the permafrost under buildings and roads from Siberia to Alaska, raising world sea levels and disrupting temperature patterns further south, an international study said on Tuesday. The frigid region's shift to warmer and wetter conditions, resulting in melting ice around the region, may cost the world economy trillions of dollars this century, it estimated. The report by 90 scientists, including United States experts, urged governments with interests in the Arctic to cut greenhouse gas emissions. |

The former President, who left the White House almost 100 days ago, is said to be appearing at Cantor Fitzgeralds LP's healthcare conference as a keynote speaker in September. Mr Obama's reported speech fee is nearly twice as much as Hillary Clinton has charged private companies for similar style events. |

The activists, who carried marijuana-leaf flags and a sign saying "Let DC Tax and Regulate Marijuana," were calling for coast-to-coast legalization of the recreational use of marijuana and protections for those who use cannabis for medical reasons. The protest included the recitation of Buddhist, Jewish, Christian and Rastafarian prayers on the lawn outside the domed national landmark. |
