US jets attack Iran-backed militiamen in south-eastern Syria Posted: 19 May 2017 01:08 AM PDT The US military said the strikes were aimed at stopping the militia advance and protect fighters it has sponsored throughout the civil war. US jets have attacked a convoy of Iranian-backed militiamen in south-eastern Syria in the first clash between the American military and forces loyal to Tehran since the US military returned to the region almost three years ago. The US military said the strikes were aimed at stopping the militia advance and protect fighters it has sponsored throughout the civil war and in the fight against the Islamic State terror group. |
4th-grader apologizes to governor for horrible crime of stealing a pen and a hazelnut Posted: 19 May 2017 11:36 AM PDT Sometimes the guilt of a crime is just too much to bear, and the perpetrator has to come clean or risk bearing the weight of his transgression for a lifetime. For an Oregon fourth-grader, that crime was theft. The theft of a pen. Oh, and also a single hazelnut, from an undisclosed mixed nut bowl perhaps. Oregon governor Kate Brown received a letter from Samuel, a fourth-grader who had recently visited the Capitol building, apologizing for a theft that had somehow gone unnoticed. SEE ALSO: Kraft ad teaches moms how to swear in front of their 'monkey-flunking' kids Samuel explained what he did and apologized, writing "these things were not mine and it was wrong for me to take them I'm very sorry." He included the pen as well as a single dollar to reimburse the cost of the hazelnut. It is one of the more luxurious nuts, after all. Samuel asked for the forgiveness of both the governor and the people of Oregon and generously, Brown granted him that peace in a handwritten note. Norway to boost climate change defences of 'doomsday' seed vault Posted: 20 May 2017 11:26 AM PDT Norway on Saturday said it would boost protection of a seed storage vault designed to protect the world's crops from disaster, after soaring temperatures caused water to leak into its entrance. Situated deep inside a mountain on a remote Arctic island in a Norwegian archipelago, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, dubbed the "doomsday" vault, is the largest of its kind and can store up to 2.5 billion seeds. Freezing temperatures inside the vault keep the seeds, sealed in packages and stored on shelves, usable for a long period of time. |

US judge dismisses discrimination suit by Texas 'clock boy' Posted: 19 May 2017 01:39 PM PDT A court in Texas has dismissed a lawsuit by the family of a Muslim teen who was invited to the White House by Barack Obama after having constructed a clock that police mistook for a bomb. Ahmed Mohamed, who was 14 at the time, became an internet sensation after being handcuffed and detained for hours for bringing his "invention" -- a circuit board wired to a digital display -- to school in the Texas city of Irving, near Dallas. Ahmed said he merely wanted to show his work to a new teacher to impress her. |

Posted: 19 May 2017 10:23 AM PDT There are few subjects more painful than slavery. The word itself conjures images of the most shameful and ugly parts of humanity and our past, histories most would prefer to distance themselves from. This may in part be why, in just two short days, The Atlantic's article "My Family's Slave," by the journalist Alex Tizon about his family's enslavement of a woman named Eudocia "Lola" Tomas Pulido, has caught the attention of and moved thousands of readers. The title itself is shocking in its admission of slavery tucked right into a modern American home. |

Motorist crashes into Times Square crowd, killing one person, injuring 22 Posted: 18 May 2017 10:03 PM PDT A U.S. Navy veteran plowed his car into pedestrians in New York City's packed Times Square on Thursday, killing an 18-year-old woman and injuring 22 people. Witnesses said the motorist mounted the sidewalk in a burgundy Honda sedan and sped along for more than three city blocks, knocking people over before the car struck a pole and came to rest at 45th Street and Broadway in Midtown Manhattan. Police who arrested the driver identified him as Richard Rojas, 26, from the New York City borough of the Bronx. |

What's Mike Pence thinking about in this photo? Posted: 19 May 2017 02:58 PM PDT President Donald Trump, his wife Melania, and a host of senior White House officials departed Friday for Trump's first overseas trip since taking office. He'll head to Saudi Arabia first and then make stops in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Vatican City, Brussels, and Sicily over the course of his nine-day trip. Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence stayed behind in D.C., where he has the delightful task of quietly weathering the onslaught of scoops regarding the Trump administration's interactions with Russia. But before he does that, he did drop by the White House to see Trump and his associates off. Philippines' Duterte: China threatened 'war' over sea row Posted: 19 May 2017 06:34 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Friday China's leaders told him they were prepared to go to war over competing claims in the South China Sea. Duterte, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing this week, said he was making the threat public in response to domestic criticism he was being too weak with China over the dispute. China claims most of the sea, a key waterway for global shipping, and has reclaimed disputed reefs and installed military facilities on them. |
Russia slams 'illegitimate' US-led strikes on Syrian forces Posted: 19 May 2017 01:45 PM PDT Russia on Friday condemned a strike by the US-led coalition against Syrian pro-regime forces as "illegitimate" and said it could harm efforts to fight Islamic State jihadists. "It is illegitimate, unlawful and yet another gross violation of Syria's sovereignty," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in televised comments while on a trip to Cyprus. US-led warplanes on Thursday carried out a strike in the east of the country against a convoy of pro-government forces which were heading towards a remote coalition garrison near the border with Jordan. |
U.S.: Military solution to North Korea would be 'tragic on an unbelievable scale' Posted: 19 May 2017 12:32 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and David Brunnstrom WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday that any military solution to the North Korea crisis would be "tragic on an unbelievable scale" and Washington was working internationally to find a diplomatic solution. North Korea has defied all calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programs, even from China, its lone major ally, calling them legitimate self-defense. It has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the U.S. mainland, and experts say its test on Sunday of a new missile was another important step toward that aim. |

He's coming with a packed agenda of the weightiest issues in global affairs, like defeating ISIS, containing Iran, convincing the Muslim world to confront extremism, overhauling relations with crucial allies in Europe and Asia, and forging Middle East peace. |
