Iran accuses U.S. of 'Iranophobia', arming 'dangerous terrorists' Posted: 22 May 2017 03:26 AM PDT Iran accused the United States on Monday of selling arms to "dangerous terrorists" in the Middle East and of spreading "Iranophobia" aimed at encouraging Arab states to purchase arms, state television reported. "Once again, by his repetitive and baseless claims about Iran, the American president ... tried to encourage the countries of the region to purchase more arms by spreading Iranophobia," Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump ended a visit to Tehran's arch-foe Saudi Arabia where arms deals worth almost $110 billion were signed. |

Posted: 23 May 2017 11:39 AM PDT Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director John Brennan has said he is "aware of information and intelligence" that revealed alleged contact between Russia and "US persons" in Donald Trump's campaign team. "I don't know whether or not such collusion existed, but I know there was a basis of information for [an investigation]," said Mr Brennan referring to classified information he saw regarding alleged links between the Trump campaign and Russia. |
Jakarta governor dropping appeal 'for sake of nation' Posted: 23 May 2017 12:38 AM PDT The wife of Jakarta's Christian governor told a tearful press conference Tuesday her husband had withdrawn his appeal against a blasphemy conviction and two-year jail term for the good of Indonesia. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was jailed this month for insulting the Koran while campaigning for re-election, a shock decision that stoked concern about rising religious intolerance in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation. The blasphemy allegations against Purnama, Jakarta's first non-Muslim governor for half a century and first ethnic Chinese leader, sparked mass protests spearheaded by radicals. |

Elephant crushes S. African hunter to death: reports Posted: 22 May 2017 07:39 AM PDT A South African big-game hunter was crushed to death when an elephant picked him up and then fell on him after being shot, Zimbabwean officials and media reports said Monday. Theunis Botha, 51, a professional hunter who specialised in hunting with hounds, died on Friday in western Zimbabwe. One elephant lifted Botha up with her trunk, and a fellow hunter shot the animal dead, the News24 website said. |
Mississippi lawmaker 'sorry' he urged lynching for statue removal Posted: 22 May 2017 01:19 PM PDT A Mississippi state lawmaker who called for the lynching of Louisiana officials for removing pro-slavery era monuments apologized on Monday after his comments sparked a firestorm of criticism. Republican Representative Karl Oliver had taken to Facebook on Saturday to criticize the removal of monuments in New Orleans that city leaders deemed racially offensive. The last of the four statues, of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, was taken down on Friday. |

Turkey summons U.S. envoy over Washington street brawl Posted: 22 May 2017 11:50 AM PDT Turkey summoned the U.S ambassador on Monday to protest the treatment of Turkish security officials in the United States during a visit by President Tayyip Erdogan last week, the foreign ministry said. A brawl erupted between protesters and Turkish security personnel outside the Turkish ambassador's residence during Erdogan's visit to Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. Turkey blamed the violence on demonstrators linked to the militant Kurdistan Workers Party while Washington's police chief described the incident as a "brutal attack" on peaceful protesters. |

India fires on Pakistani military posts, army says Posted: 23 May 2017 06:00 AM PDT India announced Tuesday it had fired mortars at Pakistani army posts across their disputed border in Kashmir, a rare public disclosure of such a pre-emptive assault against its neighbour. Troops fired at military camps in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir which were being used to harbour militants, an Indian army spokesman said. "As part of our counter-terror operations, punitive fire assaults across LoC (Line of Control, the de facto border) are being undertaken by the Indian army," Major-General Ashok Narula told a briefing in New Delhi. |

Posted: 22 May 2017 06:55 AM PDT The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to strong-arm reluctant members of his government into greeting Donald Trump at the airport – but several of them managed to embarrass him within minutes of the US president's arrival. On learning that they would have to cancel existing work commitments to travel from Jerusalem and undergo lengthy security checks just to witness the event from the sidelines, several ministers reportedly told Mr Netanyahu in Sunday's weekly cabinet meeting they had decided not to attend. Shortly afterwards, his office issued instructions demanding the presence of all government ministers. |
Fossils cast doubt on human lineage originating in Africa Posted: 22 May 2017 03:08 PM PDT By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fossils from Greece and Bulgaria of an ape-like creature that lived 7.2 million years ago may fundamentally alter the understanding of human origins, casting doubt on the view that the evolutionary lineage that led to people arose in Africa. Scientists said on Monday the creature, known as Graecopithecus freybergi and known only from a lower jawbone and an isolated tooth, may be the oldest-known member of the human lineage that began after an evolutionary split from the line that led to chimpanzees, our closest cousins. The premolar was found in south-central Bulgaria in 2009. |

South Korea fires at suspected drone at border with North amid missile crisis Posted: 23 May 2017 02:57 AM PDT By Ju-min Park and Christine Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang's latest missile test which drew international condemnation and a warning from China. The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North's test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nuclear-tipped weapon that can hit U.S. targets. The United States has been trying to persuade China, North Korea's lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea, which has conducted dozens of missile launches and tested two nuclear bombs since the start of last year, in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions and resolutions. |

Elon Musk told Donald Trump what to do about the Paris Climate Agreement Posted: 23 May 2017 09:27 AM PDT The Trump administration may finally be nearing a decision on whether to stay in the Paris Climate Agreement. Now we know that visionary businessman Elon Musk, who founded SpaceX, Tesla, and a new, mysterious tunnel-building firm called the Boring Company, is talking to President Donald Trump about what to do regarding this agreement. Given his role in alternative energy, it's no surprise that Musk is in favor of the 2016 treaty. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's Boring Company isn't waiting any longer The Paris agreement was negotiated under former president Barack Obama. And for the first time in decades of climate diplomacy, all nations agreed to take steps to cut emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases based on their own timetables. If the U.S. were to withdraw from the treaty, it's likely to have global repercussions, potentially encouraging other nations to relax their emissions reduction commitments or leave the pact entirely. In a tweet on Monday night, Musk said he has spoken with Trump and is urging him to stay in the agreement. @BigDAK54 I spoke directly with The President three weeks ago about Paris. Many others have too. Cautiously optimistic of a positive decision. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 22, 2017 Musk is part of Trump's business advisory council, for which he has received considerable criticism. He says he is remaining on it as a way to ensure that a diversity of views on particular matters, including climate change, make it to Trump's desk. Various advisors have been vying for the president's ear on this landmark climate deal, from the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, to chief strategist Steve Bannon. Some observers think the president will announce his decision about the Paris agreement later this week at the Group of 7 major industrialized nations' summit in Sicily. While there, the U.S. will come under pressure from world leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and new French President Emmanuel Macron to act on global warming, as it is a clear priority for other major industrialized nations. Trump, for his part, has called climate change a hoax, vowed during the campaign to "cancel" the Paris agreement, and on Tuesday proposed a federal budget that zeroes out funding for international climate change assistance programs. The budget also slashes spending for U.S. climate research at the Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Department, and other agencies. WATCH: |

Gambian authorities seize ex-president Jammeh's bank accounts Posted: 22 May 2017 11:57 PM PDT Gambian authorities have seized assets including 86 bank accounts and 131 properties linked to former president Yahya Jammeh, an official said on Monday, as an investigation into the veteran ruler's wealth gathers pace. The new government has accused Jammeh of massive fraud including siphoning off public money during his 22-year rule that ended in election defeat and disgraced exile in Equatorial Guinea in January. Jammeh has been out of contact since leaving for exile and his associates no longer respond to journalists' queries about the accusations against him. |

Trump to propose slashing Medicaid Posted: 22 May 2017 12:19 AM PDT President Donald Trump is expected to propose cutting $800 billion from Medicaid over 10 years in a budget plan to be released Tuesday that would slash spending on anti-poverty and other programs, US media reported. The plans for the massive cut to Medicaid -- which funds health care for low-income and disabled people -- come as lawmakers from his Republican Party are battling to repeal and replace Obamacare, in which Medicare plays an important role. The $800 billion cut to Medicaid is contingent on a health care bill passed in the House of Representatives earlier this month becoming law, The Washington Post on Sunday quoted people familiar with the plan as saying. |

Real-world 5G test is 120 times faster than home broadband – in a moving car Posted: 22 May 2017 12:44 PM PDT We've heard so many times that companies are going to start testing 5G networks "soon" that it's actually surprising when a test really takes place. But don't let all noise around 5G diminish from a new test by Verizon and Ericsson, which achieved a 6.4Gbps connection in a car being driven around a racetrack. The test happened in a car so that it could be gratuitously pegged to the Indy 500 race next weekend. But conducting a speed test in a moving vehicle really is a significant real-world milestone. It's easy enough to get insane transmission speeds in a controlled lab environment, using a bunch of big antennas aimed at each other. But taking that connection out into the real world, and putting it on top of a moving target, is a very different proposition. The raw speed is the headline figure that demands attention here. 6.4Gbps is fast -- about 120 times faster than the average home broadband connection, which is about 50Mbps. It's whole orders of magnitude faster than you need to stream multiple 4K videos, so it's simply unnecessary for most people right now. More impressive is actually the latency, the time it takes for packets of data to travel to and from your device. A normal latency on a good 4G connection right now is about 50 milliseconds, which is fast enough for web browsing and video streaming, but makes high-speed tasks like online gaming more difficult. The trial 5G connection had an undisclosed "extremely low latency," likely in the single digits. It's fast enough that the human eyes can barely perceive a difference, which was demonstrated by blacking the car out, and driving around the course using a pair of virtual-reality goggles, fed a video stream over 5G. The 5G network is just a test for now, but the applications Verizon tried out here are likely to be important down the line. Autonomous cars and virtual reality are two of the best use cases for 5G right now, as both demand huge amounts of data with extremely low latency to work. |
