The move comes within days of Texas State University outlawing all "Greek Activities" - encompassing both fraternities and sororities - following the death of a Phi Kappa Psi inductee. Similar steps have been taken in recent weeks at the University of Michigan and Florida State University. There has been mounting concern at the human toll arising from the incidents of "hazing" at many universities in the US. Such rituals involve pledgees drinking copious amounts of alcohol in a very short time, with at times fatal consequences. In May, 18 students at Penn State were charged with offences including aggravated assault and furnishing alcohol to minors following with the death of Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old engineering student. It is estimated there have been 40 deaths from hazing at US campuses over the last 10 years. In Lebanon, Mr Hariri has long been an ally of Riyadh. His coalition government, formed in a political deal last year to end years of paralysis, includes Hizbollah. President Michel Aoun, a political ally of Hizbollah, has called Mr Hariri a Saudi hostage and refused to accept his resignation unless he returns to Lebanon. Saudi Arabia and Mr Hariri say his movements were not restricted. Lebanese politicians from across the political spectrum have called for Mr Hariri to return to the country, saying it is necessary to resolve the crisis. Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, who heads President Aoun's political party, said on Thursday Beirut could escalate the crisis if Mr Hariri did not return home. "We have adopted self-restraint so far to arrive at this result so that we don't head towards diplomatic escalation and the other measures available to us," he said during a European tour aimed at building pressure for a solution to the crisis. Saudi Arabia regards Hizbollah as a conduit for Iranian interference across the Middle East, particularly in Syria, Yemen and Bahrain. It says it has no problem with Hizbollah remaining a purely political party, but has demanded it surrender its arms, which the group says are needed to defend Lebanon.

Sayed Basam Pacha died when he confronted the man wearing an explosive vest in the Afghan capital of Kabul on 16 November. His brave actions prevented the bomber from getting closer to a security checkpoint outside a hotel where a political meeting of supporters of an influential regional leader had just finished. The bomber killed 14 people, including seven more police officers, and injured 18, when he detonated his device, however the death toll would have undoubtedly been higher without the officer's decisive intervention. "He's a hero, he saved many lives," Kabul police chief Basir Mujahid told the New York Times. "All seven of those policemen are heroes but especially him. "Just think if that suicide attacker got past the gate, what would have happened - well you cannot even imagine." His father, Gen Sayed Nizam Agha, said his son "sacrificed himself to save other people". The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, with the Taliban denying any involvement. Harun Mutaref, who was at the gathering, told AFP, said he saw "many bodies including police and civilians lying in blood". "After lunch as we were exiting the hall a huge explosion shook the hall, shattering glass and causing chaos and panic," he said. In October, a suicide bomber thought to be as young as 12 killed five in Kabul's diplomatic zone, with the Islamic State again claiming responsibility.
