Pentagon confirms rare, three aircraft carrier drill November 11-14 Posted: 08 Nov 2017 04:37 PM PST The Pentagon said on Wednesday it would soon carry out the first exercise in a decade involving three aircraft carrier strike groups in the Western Pacific, confirming a Reuters report published on Monday. "It is a rare opportunity to train with two aircraft carriers together, and even rarer to be able to train with three," Admiral Scott Swift, U.S. Pacific Fleet commander, said in a statement, adding the drills would take place from Saturday to Tuesday. U.S. President Donald Trump will be traveling in Asia during the initial days of the drills. |

China's skyline shopping spree in heart of Hong Kong Posted: 07 Nov 2017 09:12 PM PST Chinese investors' penchant for Hong Kong real estate is well-known and as they take aim at the city's most prestigious buildings and office space, mainland cash is driving one of the world's priciest markets to break new records. With the Communist Party's hand seen behind the latest record purchase, some analysts raised questions about where the enormous cash flows would go as the Chinese government strengthens control over the former British colony. |

Rouhani warns Saudi Arabia of Iran's 'might' Posted: 08 Nov 2017 08:20 AM PST President Hassan Rouhani warned Saudi Arabia on Wednesday that it will achieve nothing by threatening the might of Iran, as a war of words between the regional heavyweights intensifies. Iran has strongly denied supplying any missiles to the rebels, saying that it would have been impossible to do so in any case in the face of a Saudi-led air and sea blockade. Tehran has hit back against the increasingly fierce rhetoric from Riyadh with strong words of its own, troubling international oil markets. |

U.S. blacklists 10 Venezuelans for corruption, undermining state vote Posted: 09 Nov 2017 10:20 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday sanctioned 10 more Venezuelan officials, including several government ministers, who it said had helped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's attempts to undermine democratic rule in the country. "These individuals are associated with undermining electoral processes, media censorship, or corruption in government-administered food programs in Venezuela," the U.S. Treasury said in a statement. On Oct. 15, state elections were held in Venezuela. ... |

Get Ready, Russia and China: The U.S. Military Is Working on a New Aircraft-Killer Missile Posted: 09 Nov 2017 04:48 AM PST The U.S. military has been quietly working on a new long-range air-to-air missile since at least 2016, budget documents reveal. "This project will complete the engineering and design work required to assess a multi-role, long-range interceptor for maintaining air dominance," according to the military's 2018 budget proposal. The new munition's emergence after at least two years of development helps to explain the apparent inaction on a longstanding gap in U.S. military capabilities. |

The U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia filed court papers on Monday, notifying a judge her office was dropping its case against Desiree Fairooz, a children's librarian. Fairooz had faced up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if she were convicted on both charges at trial. |

China vs. America: Who Would Win in a Naval Clash Over the South China Sea? Posted: 08 Nov 2017 06:31 AM PST The LCS was designed to fight close to shore, a characteristic that opens the vessel up to more missions — and challenges — than most Navy ships. The vessels are lightly armed, and rely on swappable "mission modules" to increase firepower and other special capabilities such as surface warfare, minesweeping and anti-submarine warfare. The year is 2016, and two of the U.S. Navy's latest ships are backing a key ally in the tinderbox of the South China Sea. |

The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund described Roem as the only out transgender person in US history to win a seat in a state legislature. |
